This book was for a course at the University of Maryland. It wasn't an easy book to follow, but the basic concepts were there

This book is very boring and hard to follow. The information is also out of date.

From Library Journal

Rothman, a bioethicist at Columbia University, traces the dramatic and profound changes that have taken medical decision-making out of the hands of physicians in the past half-century. His historical analysis, which covers medical research and human experimentation in the United States with a focus on the post-World War II era, is interesting, well written, and highly informative. Also fascinating is his recounting of the early moves toward government and bureaucratic control of medical research. This is not a case-by-case study as many bioethics books are, but rather an informed interpretation of why there are so many ethics cases in contemporary medicine to consider. Solidly researched and well documented, this book is excellent for collections in the social and life sciences, and valuable for general collections with lit erate, informed patrons.

What do you do with a book that in spite of disagree with the vantage point of the author, you have to admit that the points he raises and the stand he takes has some validity? That an author can cause the reader to stop and think about firmly held belief systems, is indicative of a good writer in my opinion.
The author of this bioethical treatise is not a physician. He is a sociologist, and he is giving the historical background to the immense changes in how the American public views its medical establishment. In the process of becoming involved in ethics in the medical world, Rothman had to come in close contact with those he was writing about...physicians. I get the feeling that he was and to a point still in awe of the great men and the great minds he has been exposed to. Occasionally, the book seemed to be biased in favor of the physicians. A book such as this cannot be written without showing the author's own biases; author's can only admit that they harbor particular biases towards those they are writing about.
In many issues Rothman comes down solidly on behalf of the physicians, whether or not they brought about the changes in the public's attitudes towards those who work in medicine. Rothman bemoans the fact that the public has involved lawyers, bioethicists, and politicians in what used to be the private domain of physicians. Yet he writes and explains the history behind this lowering of pedestals for doctors and medical researchers...all the while trying to explain why physicians felt their patients should rely 'on those who know and understand' (read that to mean physicians think most patients and families are too stupid to understand basic concepts).

while the book is fairly easy to read and organized, there are many errors. There are several places where Maxillary and Mandibular words are interchanged or incorrectly identified such as in the bisecting angles chapter. The tests at the end of several chapters have obvious errors that even teachers could not explain. The answer key the instructors had also gave incorrect answers sometimes. There is no answer key in the book for students to access which makes self-testing/studying less effective.

Plus the pages fall out easily after little use.

These types of mistakes make me doubt information in the book that may actually be accurate.

This is not a completely useless book, but by college standards, i find these type of errors unacceptable.

Catherine Mullahy's 5th edition encompasses all of the current events occurring in Case Management today from the explosion of ACO's, PCMH's, to the Affordable Care Act and how Case Managers will drive the quality of health care upwards in the next 10 to 20 years. Mullahy works side by side with the Commission of Case Manager Certification to ensure that there is an accurate accounting of data there to prepare for CCM certification (coupled with her 2-day review) for those relatively new to the field and, information supported by evidence-based research/guidelines to hold the attention of the experienced Case Manager. Her book is an eloquent blend of where we have been as Case Managers and the opportunities ahead. While this reviewer does not feel that the book is meant to be the sole review source for the CCMC certification exam, I highly recommend her book as your main reference for exam preparation. My experience in academic teaching draws me to Mullahy's book for its profound logic. I foresee that the next addition will incorporate more clinical integration as I believe there will be yet another paradigm shift that enables the Case Manager to utilize his/her clinical skills opening up a new platform of care for the Case Manager. I feel that the field of Case Management is about to REALLY evolve and we will say goodbye to mediocre salaries, being enslaved to quantity instead of quality, and quality avenues we never dreamed possible are just around the corner. In fact, I believe quality will be required to survive in all levels of health care, including health insurance.

I am an electrical engineer with experience in heart related medical device systems, with no biology background. I have tried many books over the years to help understand the ideas presented by the clinical staff. They are all too complicated to follow. This book very systematically moves through basic ideas with concise, yet elaborate descriptions of main ideas that would help one follow more sophisticated topics about various reasons for different heart problems.

This lab book and the Physio-ex CD are such a pain in the butt! I'm taking an online a&p course (1 and 2) and anytime my lab quizzes included the Physio CD, I had nightmares.

The anatomy portion of the book is essentially just a repeat of the textbook, but summarized. The figures are the exact same as they are in the textbook. One plus is that you do get some cadaver images as opposed to just drawings.

The second half of this book is a printed walkthrough of what is provided in the Physio CD. My problem with this program is that they put too much focus on the animations when you're doing the lab experiments, and less on truly making the material you're supposed to be learning accessible. There have been a few experiments that I have done so far for my class, and I still don't understand how it relates to the material I was reading about. By the time I had to take the online lab quizzes (where the questions were more advanced and required an intimate understanding of what the experiments were about), I was at a total loss.

I have also noticed that my classmates in my class had the same issue with the Physio-ex CD. I suppose that the professor f the class is partially to blame because of the quiz questions he chose, but I also know he got those questions from a test bank provided by the creators of this product.

Alas, taking an online course has its drawbacks, and not having your lab professor there to answer your questions is definitely one of them. I think this program needs to be improved upon, and they need to provide better practice questions that truly prepare you for exams.

I had to get this for my anatomy class and now have to use it for physiology class. It was great. I used it more than the actual book. The diagrams and pictures were easy to follow and study from. There is also plenty of info that was explained in better terms and detail than the heavy giant book.

I did use this review guide when studying for my CCA which I did pass. I had an older review guide (from 2010) that had a CD with practice questions and I used that also along with a website with practice questions. The best way to use this is to take every domain's exam and based on your scores determine where you should focus your studies. My lower scores were in reimbursement methodology, so I reviewed that chapter in my Health Information Management LaTour/Eichenwald/Maki textbook along with supplemental material from the Internet. I failed to review HIPAA privacy/ROI principles more closely, and that ended up being the lowest-scoring domain on the exam. So this is a TOOL to focus your studies -- not the be-all and end-all for preparation. I have heard of people complaining: "Not one question from the review guide was on the exam." Well, I'm not surprised. That's how these should be used: For PREPARATION, not MEMORIZATION. I believe I ran across one or two questions on the exam that were closely worded the same way in the review guide, but I don't think that's a failing of the review guide. Be aware that there is no CD-ROM with this. You will just be given an access code to the company website resource materials for this book which are basically the exact replication of the exams in the book, so you don't really gain anything but convenience if you like to use the online mode. If you purchase this book used, you will NOT be able to access the website if the former owner used the access code because it is tied to the original username/password account and also is valid for 365 days and will expire after that. BIG CAVEAT: I found at least 1 question, possibly 2 or more, with INCORRECT ANSWERS.

This book was recommended to me by my graduate school professor as being the most up-to-date, most inclusive book on trauma therapy that exists today, and that it is! First, it is written in an organized and coherent manner. It is extraordinarily well written and engaging which is amazing for a text of this type. It contains information on just about every subject that a beginning trauma therapist as well as a well-seasoned therapist would want to know! This is an incredible book and my only criticism is that, knowing how much I shall be referring to it, it is only a paperback and I wish it were a hardcover so that it will withstand the test of time in better condition. The price is extraordinarily reasonable when one considers the cost of most textbooks these days. I highly, highly recommend this book as a MUST read for every trauma therapist, or trauma therapist in training. I cannot say enough excellent things about the Briere and Scott text. Buy it. You will not regret it for a moment! In addition, after purchasing the DSM-V, I can say that although this book was written before the DSM-V came out, it dovetails with it extremely well, and is a perfect book to purchase after getting the new DSM-V if you don't already have Principles of Trauma Therapy. It is for anyone who is a mandated reporter also, as I am. Presently, I'm a doctoral candidate in Special Education, and find that this book will be helpful there as well. As a person who has worked directly in Special Education for over 11 years, and have had professional contact with Special Needs children for over thirty years, this book is a must--for anyone who works with children, teens, (or adults who have just disclosed trauma) whether you are in Psychology or Special Education, or any allied field that makes you a mandated reporter. The book is a MUST HAVE.
By CoolGramma613
This book is a good book if your looking for basic information about trauma therapy. However, it just really hits the basics, so unless you are reading it to just get started in the trauma field, it may be a bit remedial.

Having just graduated from school and entering the OR for the first time, I can attest that this is by far one of the best quick-reference texts I've owned yet! I use it every time I have questions on how a surgical procedure is carried out; it includes the surgical goal, equipment and instrumentation necessary, and special considerations for each and every kind of procedure in the book. This book is very useful also because it covers general and specialty surgeries. I highly recommend this for anyone entering the OR for the first time.
By Blondie
Back in October 2007 I wrote: As a senior nursing student doing my practicum in the OR, this little book offers the best concise information on specific procedures. Great for preparing the night before or in 2 minutes before a procedure. We have a voluminous Medcom series available in our suite, but I haven't touched it since getting Goldman's gem. Our OR nurse educator has taken a look at my copy and is considering recommending it for her new hires. If your need is not immediate, be aware that a new edition will be out in December 2007.

January, 2008-Well the NEW EDITION is here and it's twice as many pages (1200), up-to-date (2007 vs. 1996), 100 new procedures and covers all the newest techniques and technology. As I now start my OR internship as a greduate nurse I look forward to using this new and even better edition of the best portable nursing reference for the OR! It's a bargain for the info it contains!

The book presents an overview of multivariate statistics and their place in research. It describes the appropriate context for -- and the types of empirical questions that can best be addressed by -- each technique or family of techniques, as well as the distribution assumptions that must be met for the analysis to be meaningful. The most commonly used multivariate techniques are examined in detail: multiple regression and correlation, path analysis, principal-components analysis, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, multidimensional scaling, analysis of cross-classified data, logistic regression, multivariate an alysis of variance (MANOVA), discriminant analysis, and meta-analysis. Statistical notations are explained, underlying assumptions are described, and terms are defined clearly and understandably. Concepts and symbols are presented with minimal use of formulas and a generous use of real-world research examples. Each chapter also includes suggestions for additional reading and a glossary of statistical and related terms.

As someone who has tried to teach multivariate statistics to non-statistician graduate students for the past 5 years, I have found this to be a very valuable and clearly-written text. As advertised and as the previous reviewer noted, the text is largely free of complex statistical equations and instead has clear descriptions of each type of test as well as common applications of that test. It is a perfect introduction for students who are intimidated by numbers and equations yet need to know about multivariate statistics for their graduate studies.
The book has several weaknesses that I found require supplementing with other texts. For one, there is no tie-in with major computerized statistical applications like SPSS and SAS nor are there example exercises for students to run and interpret statistical tests for themselves. I have found such exercises to be invaluable in teaching the meaning and uses of multivariate tests. There also should have been a discussion of general issues that cut across the different multivariate tests such as data cleaning, data transformation, the role of correlation matrices and the like and so on. For coverage of these issues, I have found it helpful to use chapters from Tabachnik and Fidel's Using Multivariate Statistics text. Finally, a number of tests, such as survival analysis are not covered in this text, though a second volume by the same authors does cover survival analysis as well as other techniques and should be considered as a companion volume as well.
In sum, this is an excellent and unusually clearly written text that is ideal for non-statistician graduate students in the social sciences. More in-depth analysis of important issues related to multivariate statistics and classroom exercises using statistical computer applications requires augmenting this text with additional readings.
By J. A. Swartz
The book is an overview of a variety of multivariate statistical techniques. The book is geared as a companion to a heavy duty stats textbook, with the purpose of providing conceptual discussions of each of the techniques. And it succeeds brilliantly. The authors of each chapter treat the topic statistic with very little, if any Greek, plenty of concrete examples, and clearly delineate the assumptions of the statistical procedure, when it is appropriate and inappropriate to use the procedure, and how to interpret the results of the analysis. If what you want is simply to get a good, practical, conceptual understanding of a statistical procedure and its uses, without any of the theoretical, mathematical derivations, this is the book for you!! This book literally saved my grade in my multivariate stats class. No grad student should be without this.

Review

"Technology is at the heart of current debates about the future and sustainability of health care systems. This book, a tribute to interdisciplinary thinking, uncovers the many facets of this complex interaction. Drawing from the fields of Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and Science and Technology Studies (STS), it presents an original approach to reconciling the innovation discourse with the conundrum of health care systems. A brilliant scholarly work." - Renaldo Battista, Director of Health Administration, University of Montreal, and Canada Research Chair in Health Technology Assessment

"The Problem of Health Technology is a lucid and thought-provoking analysis of core issues that lie at the heart of HTA. Pascale Lehoux has provided a timely examination of the limitations of health evaluation techniques and how these can be overcome. Placing HTA in its social context and drawing on work from science and technology studies, she not only shows how it is influenced by normativity, but also how through a recognition of this, it can develop a more transparent and so policy-effective contribution in the future. Her book is therefore not just of academic interest, but of great importance to HTA practitioners and policymakers" -Andrew Webster, author of Health, technology and Society.

All Leonardo's drawings have been interpreted in the light of modern knowledge by a practicing cardiac clinician and anatomist. The veracity of his work is proven against contemporary dissections of cardiac structure and comparison of his illustrations with contemporary images generated by Magnetic Resonance scanners and high definition ultrasound will astound the reader. Perhaps the most interesting element is the re-dissection of the Ox heart set against Leonardo’s own drawings.

About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student’s perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field—including those of former students, now in health careers—that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known.

In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology® CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and Sigma Xi.

Susan J. Mitchell earned her Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Michigan. She studied the cellular basis of behavior before joining the faculty at Onondaga Community College where she is currently a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. Her research in neurophysiology and training in physiology positioned her to write the original Nervous, Endocrine, and Digestive System modules in the Interactive Physiology 10-System Suite tutorial program. She has been honored with a NISOD Excellence Award for teaching, and been awarded several grants to develop technological resources for biology at OCC. Dr. Mitchell is a member of the American Physiological Society, National Association of Biology Teachers, National Science Teachers Association, and the Human Anatomy and Physiological Society (HAPS), where she is currently active on the Curriculum and Instruction Committee.
