Review

All relevant topics have been covered. In fact, this is a more comprehensive book than Essentials of Microbiology for Dental Students published by OUP which I own.

I find myself trying to say that the book goes into too much depth but if you were to adhere strictly to the BDS curriculum you would find a place for the entire contents, i.e. there is every chance that any part of this book could appear in a BDS exam. In addition, the book touches on other areas outwith microbiology - oral medicine, immunology, etc. This is a very good feature as it widens the readers' perspective.

After comparing this book to the Oxford equivalent I would certainly recommend the Churchill-Livingston version. Why? Because of the assessments at the end of chapters, the more comprehensive index and the inclusion of a glossary. In addition, although the content is similar in both books, the Churchill-Livingston version is not only more detailed, it has been laid out in shorter chapters which is better for revision.

Lecturers need to know that this is a better book than the Oxford equivalent because their reading list recommendation, in my view, is what influences students most when buying a book when they are similarly priced.

S Johnston, VT, West Lothian, UK, August 2008

This text covers clinically-related material featured in Bagg, et al. and the more basic science covered in Marsh and Martin, two texts which we have always recommend. The combination offered here makes for a very comprehensive package which I feel is better for our Oral Science and Medicine course.

Dr John W Smalley, Senior Lecturer in Dental Science, The University of Liverpool, September 2008

The book is very well ordered, easy to read and logically put together making quite a tough subject quite enjoyable to read. This book has a glossary, review questions at the end of each chapter and an end of chapter summary - excellent!

Ian Arad, VT, West London, UK, September 2008

"Overall this a very useful introductory textbook which deserves to be included on the reading list for dental undergraduates and one whcih I will continue to recommend."

WTmagazine, April 2012

"Its almost certainly will be a first choice text for dental students and mayalso appeal to general dental practitioners. This new fourth edition expands on the previous versions and now contains the latest information regarding unculturable bacteria, a greatly expand section on oral biofilms and their relevance to systemic disease, and a new section on oral immunology and the microbiology of perimplantitis...In summary, a great revision book and a must have for dental students!"

Posts about Download The Book Methods in Medical Informatics: Fundamentals of Healthcare Programming in Perl, Python, and Ruby from 4shared, mediafire, hotfile, and mirror link Too often, healthcare workers are led to believe that medical informatics is a complex field that can only be mastered by teams of professional programmers. This is simply not the case. With just a few dozen simple algorithms, easily implemented with open source programming languages, you can fully utilize the medical information contained in clinical and research datasets. The common computational tasks of medical informatics are accessible to anyone willing to learn the basics. Methods in Medical Informatics: Fundamentals of Healthcare Programming in Perl, Python, and Ruby demonstrates that biomedical professionals with fundamental programming knowledge can master any kind of data collection. Providing you with access to data, nomenclatures, and programming scripts and languages that are all free and publicly available, this book — Describes the structure of data sources used, with instructions for downloading Includes a clearly written explanation of each algorithm Offers equivalent scripts in Perl, Python, and Ruby, for each algorithm Shows how to write short, quickly learned scripts, using a minimal selection of commands Teaches basic informatics methods for retrieving, organizing, merging, and analyzing data sources Provides case studies that detail the kinds of questions that biomedical scientists can ask and answer with public data and an open source programming language Requiring no more than a working knowledge of Perl, Python, or Ruby, Methods in Medical Informatics will have you writing powerful programs in just a few minutes. Within its chapters, you will find descriptions of the basic methods and implementations needed to complete many of the projects you will encounter in your biomedical career. This review can also be found in the Journal of Pathology Informatics ([...]), an open access journal for the field of Pathology Informatics.

As subspecialty board certification in clinical informatics has finally become a reality, Jules Berman's book Methods in Medical Informatics could not be more timely. This well-written and informative text combines Dr. Berman's expertise in programming with his vast knowledge of publicly available data sets and everyday healthcare programming needs to result in a book which should, in the opinion of this reviewer, become a staple in health informatics education programs as well as a standard addition to the personal libraries of informaticists.

The book's title does not do justice to the wealth of information contained therein. While Python, Perl, and Ruby are certainly important components of the text as described below, the contents also house a huge amount of valuable information on publicly available data sets and how they can be accessed and used for medical discovery. Through parallel examples in Python, Perl, and Ruby, the reader is taken through sets of structured exercises, each of which includes a description of the problem or task, a human readable explanation of the script algorithm, script examples and analysis of the expected results. While this book was not intended for the novice programmer, the organization and structure of its content and explanation of the process behind the code easily facilitate a reader's ability to use the examples on his or her own computer with a minimum of background in each of the languages provided.

This is a good quick reference. I use it for SOAP cases at school and then look up the finer details in the internal medicine books. It's a real time saver. Has consistently pointed me in a reliable direction. Might be a little too general to use out in practice but I am going to hang onto mine. It's organized well, easy to use, and tells you enough to be able to rule most things in or out.

Some books I've read in the past are too basic. This one is reasonably complex, but not overly complicated. If you're a new nurse or just a few years out of school and you want to dig deeper into ER nursing, then this book is great. If you are already advanced in your experience, then this book might not be technical enough. It's a good resource to keep any ER nurse sharp though.

This thin handbook is as indispensible as your neurology tools during residency training. It packs a lot of information in a tiny space and covers many topics. It does not have references or prognostic stats, but it will help you in DDx, basic management issues, or just simply act as a reminder when you can't quite remember details about something. I was pleasantly surprised at how much info is in this book. Highly recommended.

In The Gifts of Imperfection, Brené Brown, a leading expert on shame, authenticity, and belonging, shares ten guideposts on the power of Wholehearted living—a way of engaging with the world from a place of worthiness.

"This important book is about the lifelong journey from 'What will people think?' to 'I am enough.' Brown's unique ability to blend original research with honest storytelling makes reading The Gifts of Imperfection like having a long, uplifting conversation with a very wise friend who offers compassion, wisdom, and great advice."
--Harriet Lerner, New York Times best-selling author of The Dance of Anger and The Dance of Connection

"Brené Brown courageously tackles the dark emotions that get in the way of leading a fuller life; read this book and let some of that courage rub off on you."
--Daniel H. Pink, New York Times best-selling author of A Whole New Mind

"Courage, compassion, and connection: Through Brené's research, observations, and guidance, these three little words can open the door to amazing change in your life."
--Ali Edwards, author of Life Artist

Each day we face a barrage of images and messages from society and the media telling us who, what, and how we should be. We are led to believe that if we could only look perfect and lead perfect lives, we'd no longer feel inadequate. So most of us perform, please, and perfect, all the while thinking, What if I can't keep all of these balls in the air? Why isn't everyone else working harder and living up to my expectations? What will people think if I fail or give up? When can I stop proving myself?

In The Gifts of Imperfection, Brené Brown, Ph.D., a leading expert on shame, authenticity and belonging, shares what she's learned from a decade of research on the power of Wholehearted Living a way of engaging with the world from a place of worthiness.

In her ten guideposts, Brown engages our minds, hearts, and spirits as she explores how we can cultivate the courage, compassion, and connection to wake up in the morning and think, No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough, And to go to bed at night thinking, Yes, I am sometimes afraid, but I am also brave. And, yes, I am imperfect and vulnerable, but that doesn't change the truth that I am worthy of love and belonging.

Brené Brown, Ph.D., L.M.S.W., is a writer and research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, where she studies how shame affects the way people live, love, parent, work, and build relationships. A dynamic public speaker, she frequently presents on the topic of shame resilience at conferences and public events. Visit her popular blog to learn more.

-I originally bought this book in May of 2011. I can't remember exactly why it spoke to me, but I know I was looking for self esteem boosting books. I think maybe the title resonated because I realized I was having some trouble with perfectionism. Accepting mistakes, compassion for myself, forgiving myself, but also pushing forward to being a better person, a better worker, friend, girlfriend, etc. It resonates today because I see how much of a perfectionist I can be, and how much trouble I am having forgiving myself for past mistakes, and trying not to label myself because of them. I am having trouble sufficiently feeling the guilt enough to change, letting that feeling in, but then forgiving myself, and not letting those behaviors define who I am as a person.
How did the book address this?

-I think these quotes from the book really get to the heart of the message: "Perfectionism is, at its core, about trying to earn approval and acceptance.... Healthy striving is self-focused--How can I improve? Perfectionism is other-focused--What will they think?... Perfectionism is addictive because when we invariably do experience shame, judgment, and blame, we often believe it's because we weren't perfect enough. So rather than questioning the faulty logic of perfectionism, we become even more entrenched in our quest to live, look, and do everything just right." Brown, Brene (2010-09-20). The Gifts of Imperfection (p. 56-57). Hazelden. Kindle Edition.
-What I got from this is that perfectionism tricks us into thinking we have it all: we can feel connected and invulnerable and in control. BUT, it is ultimately unsatisfying because it #1) it is a lie. We aren't in control or invulnerable, or perfect.

For anyone attempt an anaesthetic primary examination, Stoelting is a mandatory resource for pharmacology.

It is an unfortunate reality that all pharmacology texts disagree with one another in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. At least in Australia, Stoelting is taken to be the examination reference. It also thus plays the role of a de facto syllabus: material in Stoelting is much more likely to be examined, and material not covered in Stoelting less so.

For this reason, it is indispensible for exam candidates and I would strongly advocate having your own copy. In the end, it is a worthwhile investment given the amount of flesh you already have on the line.

However, I offer two significant points of caution:

(a) DO NOT buy the "mini" Stoelting (Handbook of Pharmacology and Physiology in Anesthetic Practice). It does not have the detailed information required for the exam. I started with the "mini" Handbook but, thankfully, realised that it was not up to par and bought the full text in time to prepare.

(b) IGNORE the physiology section of the text. It is useless. I think of Stoelting exclusively as a pharmacology text, and seek better resources for physiology (Brandis' excellent private publication "The Physiology Viva"... do an Internet search for it; Principles of Physiology for the Anaesthetist, Second edition; and

Because of the type of work I do, I often meet people who have disabilities and may no longer be able to do their job, or may be loosing their job. This is one of a few books that can actually help then go through the maze of SSD, so I show them the book and suggest they read it cover to cover (along with the Disability Workbook). Folks need to be prepared for all the paperwork involved and need to be aware of what is going to be a very long and usually uphill battle.
Luckily, Nolo writes some excellent books in many areas (I also give out their Divorce book...trust me, a semi educated client is easier to work with then one who knows nothing about the predicament they are in!

The book contains a lot of information, and is also a workbook to help them apply for Social security (SSA). Many of my the clients that come to see me are extremely depressed and completely disorganized due to stress caused from their illness, and the fear of having just lost their job or are going to. There is always downward spiral because of the financial insecurity that is (or soon will be) happening, not to mention on top of that, the often physical and emotional pain they might be in. Don't get me wrong, I am not advocating SSI, but there are some people who truly have fallen into a situation, where their health has so deteriorated, this might be their best option...that is up to them and their doctor.

This book is very good and any attorney would be pleased their client had many forms filled out, and had put critical thought into their situation before they come to an attorneys office. It will save them a lot of headaches and heartaches by getting their thoughts organized, so, someone else can review their history in a logical manner.

I wish I knew of more books like Mirage of Health. Written by a scientist--Dubos was a Harvard-trained Microbiologist--it is not by any means an academic work. It doesn't make use of footnotes or even a bibliography. We are left to trust in Dubos' authority as scientist and author which I had no problem doing.

Despite being written in 1959, the book is surprisingly fresh and almost timeless. This is mostly because Dubos writes primarily about events and trends that occurred in the decades and centuries before it was written and doesn't spend a long time focusing on the contemporary state of medical science. One interesting exception to this is when Dubos mentions that cancer's cause--which is now known to be genetic mutation--was unknown at the time of writing.

Dubos makes it clear that the doctrine of specific etiology (that is the notion that all medical problems can be traced to a certain, physical cause) has contributed more to medicine in the last century than probably any other idea. Yet Dubos also stresses the limitations of this mindset. He emphasizes that with physical ailments, there are many causes at work and it is difficult or impossible to determine the most significant among these. By emphasizing the multitude of factors that determine our health, Dubos makes it clear that balance with our environment is of utmost importance to maintenance of health.

Dubos illustrates this point historically in a most vivid fashion. In the presence of a new pathogen, for example, a population can be decimated. Dubos uses the example of the introduction of smallpox to America as an example of such devastation. Another way that Dubos illustrates humans' relationship with their environment is the story of a Zulu tribe in Africa.

I found this book to be incredibly easy to understand and I love the step by step explanations. I'm taking my first pharmacology class right now and was very rusty on my basic math skills and have never worked with calculations for meds. This book, thus far, (I'm still using it) has helping me understand class material much better. I recommend this book for anyone who is getting into the medical field and having to deal with math and dosages. It is a great learning tool.
By Cynthia Marks
It is a very good text. It's simplified but still at an adult level. Plenty of good examples and exercises. Our teacher loves it, says it's the best text she had seen in awhile. One thing could stand improving. The medical labels are a little small to read. They could stand to be much larger.

In The Gifts of Imperfection, Brené Brown, a leading expert on shame, authenticity, and belonging, shares 10 guideposts on the power of Wholehearted Living - a way of engaging with the world from a place of worthiness. Each day we face a barrage of images and messages from society and the media telling us who, what, and how we should be. We are led to believe that if we could only look perfect and lead perfect lives, we'd no longer feel inadequate. So most of us perform, please, and perfect, all the while thinking, "What if I can't keep all of these balls in the air? Why isn't everyone else working harder and living up to my expectations? What will people think if I fail or give up? When can I stop proving myself?"

In The Gifts of Imperfection, Brené Brown, Ph.D., a leading expert on shame, authenticity and belonging, shares what she's learned from a decade of research on the power of Wholehearted Living - a way of engaging with the world from a place of worthiness.

In her 10 guideposts, Brown engages our minds, hearts, and spirits as she explores how we can cultivate the courage, compassion, and connection to wake up in the morning and think, "No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough," and to go to bed at night thinking, "Yes, I am sometimes afraid, but I am also brave. And, yes, I am imperfect and vulnerable, but that doesn't change the truth that I am worthy of love and belonging."

Review

"This is certainly not a pocket book - it is a very substantial text for use as a quick reference guide, which is reflected in the format. There is something in it for everyone with an interest in ruminant medicine, regardless of their experience level.... Despite its size, the layout of this book is simple and has a simple format. It fulfills the aims set out in the preface and offers good value by including a CD." (Veterinary Times, September 2010)

"Fans of the series no doubt appreciate the easy to use, no-frills approach to veterinary textbooks, providing the relevant basic information for the vet or student on the go (or past the deadline)." (Veterinary Practice, December 2009)

"The Five-Minute Veterinary Consult has strength in breadth and is extremely easy to navigate. If you need to remind yourself of the basics of an unfamiliar or long-forgotten topic, and you have only five minutes, you may find that this book is a worthy addition to the shelf or car boot." (The Veterinary Record, December 2009)

"An excellent quick-reference resource for any veterinarian who treats cattle, sheep, goats, cervids, or camelids... provides a practical overview of the most important diseases and production problems in these species. This textbook is intended as a go-to reference when review of a particular topic is required; it is not intended to replace more detailed internal medicine or production medicine references. However, the inclusion of management and husbandry topics makes this one of the most comprehensive textbooks available to ruminant practitioners." (Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, September 2009)

"This valuable book is a compilation of necessary and welcome information. The editor and authors have met their objectives in an exemplary manner." (Doody’s Book Reviews, September 2009)

"Every vet library must have this." (Midwest Book Review, July 2009)

Used only this book to study for the PTCE and passed easily. I only studied for about 2 weeks (about 3-4 hours a day, 4-5 days per week) and was able to finish the test, review my answers, and leave the test with 20 minutes to spare. The end of chapter questions and study questions on the CD helped tremendously.

I bought this book for my daughter (who is a freshman in a pre-pharmacy program) to use as a review for the cert exam. She thought it thoroughly covered what was on the exam. The CD was a great testing tool and offered new questions each time. She passed with flying colors and only had a couple of weeks to study!

I was surprised at how thorough and concise this book could be at the same time. It uses effective diagrams and precise language to communicate many of the complexities of biochemistry. It's probably more useful if you've had prior exposure to the subject.

I failed my first biochem midterm 25 yrs ago, a far below average score. I was so upset and hope to find something to boost my grade. Those thick biochem books certainly could not fit my need. A friend faced same problem as mine recommended me the first version of Lippincott's BioChem. I used this book as my first read and the big thick book as the second. Using this new strategy, I passed the final and I recommended this book highly to all my friends and relatives. This book is among few books that had really changed my career.

Review

As subspecialty board certification in clinical informatics has finally become a reality, Jules Berman’s Methods in Medical Informatics could not be more timely. This well-written and informative text combines Dr. Berman’s expertise in programming with his vast knowledge of publicly available data sets and everyday healthcare programming needs to result in a book which … should become a staple in health informatics education programs as well as a standard addition to the personal libraries of informaticists.
—Alexis B. Carter, Journal of Pathology Informatics, October 2011

This book provides an introduction to processing clinical and population health data using rigorous methods and widely available, low cost, but very capable tools. The inclusion of the three leading dynamic programming languages broadens the appeal … bridges the gap from programming instruction to dealing with specialized medical data, making it possible to teach a relevant programming course in a biomedical environment. I would have loved to have a copy of this when I was teaching introductory programming for medical informatics.
—Professor James H. Harrison, Jr., Director of Clinical Informatics, University of Virginia

… presents students and professionals in the healthcare field (who have some working knowledge of the open-source programming languages Perl, Python, or Ruby) with instruction for applying basic informatics algorithms to medical data sets. He [the author] provides algorithm scripts for each of the languages, along with step-by-step explanations of the algorithms used for retrieving, organizing, merging, and analyzing such data sources as the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results project, the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed service, the mortality records of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the US Census, and the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man data set on inherited conditions.
—SciTech Book News, February 2011
