You can download Measuring Health: A Guide to Rating Scales and Questionnaires for everyone book mediafire, rapishare, and mirror link Worldwide economic constraints on health care systems have highlighted the importance of evidence-based medicine and evidence-based health policy. The resulting clinical trials and health services research studies require instruments to monitor the outcomes of care and the output of the health system. However, the over-abundance of competing measurement scales can make choosing a measure difficult at best. Measuring Health provides in-depth reviews of over 100 of the leading health measurement tools and serves as a guide for choosing among them.LNow in its third edition, this book provides a critical overview of the field of health measurement, with a technical introduction and discussion of the history and future directions for the field. This latest edition updates the information on each of the measures previously reviewed, and includes a complete new chapter on anxiety measurement to accompany the one on depression. It has also added new instruments to those previously reviewed in each of the chapters in the book.LChapters cover measurements of physical disability, social health, psychological well-being, anxiety, depression, mental status testing, pain, general health status and quality of life. Each chapter presents a tabular comparison of the quality of the instruments reviewed, followed by a detailed description of each method, covering its purpose and conceptual basis, its reliability and validity and, where possible, shows a copy of the actual scale. To ensure accuracy of the information, each review has been approved by the original author of each instrument or by an acknowledged expert. In an era of accountability, McDowell and Newell do an excellent job of pulling together instruments to assess patients' health. Although this volume was primary designed for Occupational and Physical Therapists, it should have a broader audience. It includes over 80 instruments with a summary on how to employ each device with estimates of reliability and validity. They give more than adequate details to enable the professional to make decisions regarding the quality and appropriateness of each single measure. Users of these tools need to comprehend the extreme lengths that it took for McDowell and Newell to accomplish their task. Their work is truly impressive. On pages 47-50, the authors do a particularly good job explaining the difference between ADL and IADL.
In addition, the authors do a particularly good job in providing technical details needed by professionals to make decisions about the need and appropriateness of an instrument to serve the specific needs of a patient. Students who are learning about calibration of psychometric instruments will also find the work beneficial. They will immediately see the practical application of theoretical concepts presented in classroom decisions. I have placed this fine book on closed serve for students to use after my presentation on reliability and validity.
Every university library should adopt a copy this is fine monograph.

... Which is suppose is not a big deal for a book that has to cover all of health. It did describe 8 scales that covered anxiety in general, however. If I needed to chose a scale to measure anxiety for an important project then I would definitely see what this book had to offer. If you wanted a book about health scales but not about SPECIFIC health scales, then I would go for Streiner and Norman.

My copy of the book seemed to have been printed with a laser printer and not had the toner fused to the paper. The print smudged if I rubbed it with a finger and I could completely erase a word if I tried to use a highlighter pen to highlight it! It was, "Printed in the United States of America on acid-free paper". Oopsie. Maybe they could learn something from Alphapress and have their books printed on demand by Amazon!

The introduction to the Anxiety chapter made a nonsensical and unreferenced distinction between anxiety and fear. It also makes naive comments about who uses dimensional and categorical scales.

I recommend that if you are thinking of getting this book, that you first consider Measures for Clinical Practice and Research by Fischer and Corcoran, also published by OUP, but printed with actual ink. It is huge, 2 volumes, about 1400 pages, and has lots more scales.

Review

Colonial Pathologies does the work that many colonial histories profess to do but rarely carry out: it provides us with a meticulous, dynamic, and grounded analysis of how political rationalities were honed and colonial and colonized subjectivities were formed through the changing medical perceptions and practices of U.S. imperial policy. Not least, it demonstrates how Philippines colonial public health regimes provided the template for subsequent healthcare in the Philippines, in the United States, and in international health services more broadly.”—Ann Laura Stoler, editor of Haunted by Empire: Geographies of Intimacy in North American History

“An imaginative and well-informed study of what might be called the bodily dimension of imperial relationships in the Philippines. Warwick Anderson explores the subjective and multidimensional aspects of the formally humane and objective realm of tropical public health, illuminating the American colonial experience and foreshadowing ambiguities and paradoxes in what we have come to call global health.”—Charles E. Rosenberg, author of No Other Gods: On Science and American Social Thought

“It’s difficult to overstate the significance of this book. Its account of hygiene as the means for establishing ‘biomedical citizenship’ in the Philippines under U.S. rule is carefully crafted and powerfully argued. Sympathetically deconstructing the assertiveness and delusions of white colonial medical practitioners beset by the specters of native bodily excess, Warwick Anderson shows how race and biology defined civic identities in the colony and the metropole alike. A path-breaking work on imperial medicine, it is certain to attract a wide readership.”—Vicente L. Rafael, author of The Promise of the Foreign: Nationalism and the Technics of Translation in the Spanish Philippines

Colonial medicine has been a major issue of debate in social science these years. One reason for that is the emergence of globalization that elevates previous colonies to the focus of attention because of their roles in the global system of production and their peculiar political configurations. No longer subliminal, these ex-colonies however pose intriguing but difficult questions regarding various aspects of (post-)modernity. How did they deal with the so-called colonial legacy? How did the modernity defined in "the West" mean to them? What insights can we get by looking at the disciplinary process that the colonized people embraced, or worse, endured? Or, for this book, what is the relations between the medical and public health measures in colony and those in metropolis?

It is easy for studies of this kind to fall back into either a progressivist eurocentric argument (such as Basalla's diffusionism) or a normative pluralistic claim. The former refers to a pattern of diffusion of knowledge from the center (read Europe) to the periphery (the rest of the world); the latter means that we need to appreciate the achievements not only in the center but also in the periphery. But Anderson pushes the claim further. He challenges the logic of the center/periphery division and argues that in fact, the center of colonial force may be the periphery of knowledge production. The conceptual hierarachy is shaken and replaced with a more reciprocally dynamic and interactive notion. Think about the medical knowledge that was obtained in the Philippines but was later applied in America.

Wow! I bought this book a couple of months ago, but just got around to opening it up last night to study for a histology test. I expected to find a slew of labelled photomicrographs to review, but this book is actually so much more! It is really an anatomy, physiology and histology text all in one - and it is done very very well.

The book is divided into 24 chapters, with chapters by system, tissue type, basic cell biology as well as tissue/slide preparation. Each chapter covers the anatomy and physiology of the system or tissue in question extremely well. The text gets right to the point, but is still very complete in its explanations. Within each paragraph, key words are bolded in red, so you can quickly find the exact topic you are interested in within a subject. All topics are supplemented with fully labelled light and electron photomicrographs of each structure, tissue and cell. Illustrations also accompany a majority of the micrographs to clarify things.

All illustrations and micrographs are thoroughly labelled. Within text pictures are typically 1/4 to 1/2 page in size, and each chapter has its own set of full-page color plates for even better up-close visualization and study. The full-page color photomicrographs at the end of each chapter are fully labelled, but go even further than that with exact descriptions of each label on the opposing page. This is really amazing, because, for instance, on a slide of the kidney that I was studying, not only were the proximal and distal tubules and collecting ducts labelled, there were also accompanying descriptions on the opposing page as to why one was different from another in these very similar looking structures.

I am just barely begining to use this textbook in my speech pathology courses, but I do have one major complaint. The software, Anatesse, and studywares are not mac compatible. I was able to get the studywares cd to work on my mac by testing it out on a trial version of crossover mac, but the anatesse only shows the uninstall file..... Very annoying. No where on any of the info does it say what operating system is required. In addition on of my classmates is having issues running it on vista as well.... Fortunatly Seikel the main author is the head of the department I am in so I will be able to complain to someone.....
By K. Piper-Fangman
I don't say this lightly, but this book should be thrown in the trash. The sheer amount of incorrect information and typos should already give you a warning. The information is very unclear, often runs around in circles, and you reread the pages only to realize that at the end you haven't learned a thing. What the author does often is explain what anatomical structures are next to where in a rambling fashion; all without providing enough diagrams and pictures that correspond with the text. Sometimes the information contradicts what's been stated before, so you're left wondering what the hell is correct and what's not. It is absolutely maddening and nearly impossible to learn from this book. The few diagrams and pictures that are in the book are unhelpful, often incorrect, and unclear - whoever took pictures and drew diagrams for this textbook did not do their job. I'll give one example of many: in the ear chapter, the artist points to the cymba concha and labels it the triangular fossa. I had to check at least 3 other texts to confirm that this textbook got it wrong, and yes, it was wrong! I had to rely on my old anatomy textbooks and even bought the Netter's Head and Neck Anatomy for Dentistry text to supplement this craptastic excuse for a textbook. Even Barron's Anatomy and Physiology review book was more complete and clear than this one. I just don't understand why any professor would ever use this book! DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. You're going to end up learning the wrong information.

This book was excellent in preparing for the CMSA certification review course.
I passed on the first try. I also used the Anderson CE review course for case management that goes along with this book. It provides the page number for finding the answer to every question. The other book that I found very helpful was the CCM certification study guide. It had lots of questions and asked each question so many times that you had no choice but to learn the material. When I took the exam there were probably 2 questions that were familiar to me; but, do to all of the practice exams that I took and reading the CMSA core curriculum for case management 2 times: I was extremely well prepared. My advice to anyone preparing for the CMSA certification examination for the CCM certification. Read the CMSA core curriculum for case management and practice as many examination questions as you can find over and over again. Good Luck.
By Ruth D. Allen
I just took, and passed, CCMC's CCM exam on the first try. Written in outline form, this book packs a lot of punch. Not one single word is wasted. Every chapter is relevant, and contains an amazing amount of detail. My copy is now heavily highlighted, and on my office desk as a reference book. I would highly recommend it to anyone prepping for the exam.

The biology of cancer-first edition by Prof. R. A. Weinberg was an immediate hit. A masterpiece for clarity, sublime scholarship and style. The second edition has all of the qualities appreciated by the readers including a very solid chapters update. All chapters have been rewritten and new data added covering the latest trend in scientific literature. A DVD is included containing images and movies.
The book is further enhanced by a process of revision and update that magically cover almost any aspect, including immunology, therapy and cell biology. Prof. Weinberg is famous for scientific articles with a clear and incisive prose and the book offers all the nuances of his style. In addition, topics are extremely well integrated. Students and scientists will be happy to see how chapters are offering superlative insights with a unique perspective of the field. I was waiting the second edition for several years. And I am surprised to see how a masterpiece morphed into another one. Images and printing are state of the art.
By Antonio Covacci
This is a classic book but needed refreshing. The new edition is in many ways a completely new book with many new topics and excellent graphics. The writing style is fairly consistent throughout this very comprehensive look into the molecular biology of cancer. Useful to many different levels of readers, starting at the advanced high school level.

"This is an outstanding introductory text for anyone beginning to learn how to conduct a patient interview and perform a physical diagnosis. While there have been numerous books on this topic, and some that have been available for generations, this clearly is one of the very best currently available.

With a limited budget, this is the one book that is worth the price, considering the companion website with the added illustrations. It is an absolute must for every medical library and a tremendous addition for the experienced clinician. Weighted Numerical Score: 100 - 5 Stars!" - Doody's Reviews

Guest Reviewer: V.S. Ramachandran on Subliminal

V.S. Ramachandran is a neuroscientist known for his work in the fields of behavioral neurology and visual psychophysics. The author of The Tell-Tale Brain, He is the Director of the Center for Brain and Cognition, and is currently a Professor in the Department of Psychology and the Neurosciences Graduate Program at the University of California, San Diego.

This delightfully accessible yet intellectually rigorous book transcends traditional boundaries between neuroscience, psychology and philosophy, to tackle the riddle of the unconscious mind. Freud bashing is a popular intellectual pastime these days (I myself have been guilty on occasion) but Mlodinow shows that by emphasizing the unconscious he was on the right track: we are completely unaware of the vast majority of events going on inside our brains. The book presents compelling evidence gleaned from a variety of sources to show that much of our behavior is governed not so much by our conscious mind – which is prone to claim credit – but by a cauldron of motives, drives and unconscious propensities of which we are largely oblivious. Indeed, most of our actions are carried out by the unconscious mind (or minds ) which exists in peaceful harmony with the conscious person "inside" your body. The question of why we are conscious of the tip of the iceberg of neural activity continues to remain elusive but, perhaps, the answer can be found by asking what you can do without being conscious; What’s the IQ of the unconscious mind? Here Mlodinow offers dazzling new insights into what the unconscious can and does do, to influence our lives.

Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior by Leonard Mlodinow

"Subliminal" is the provocative and fascinating look at the unconscious part of our minds. One of my favorite authors and physicists, Leonard Mlodinow, takes the readers on a journey into the science of the unconscious. What a fun and enlightening book this was. Mlodinow is the master of making the difficult accessible and fun for the masses. How are mind works is one of the most interesting subjects and I was thrilled to see that the coauthor of both the Grand Design and the equally interesting book War of the Worldviews makes his latest venture into this intriguing science. This excellent 272-page book is composed of the following ten chapters: 1. The New Unconscious, 2. Senses Plus Mind Equals Reality, 3. Remembering and Forgetting, 4. The Importance of Being Social, 5. Reading People, 6. Judging People by Their Covers, 7. Sorting People and Things, 8. In-Groups and Out-Groups, 9. Feelings, and 10. Self.

Positives:
1. A fascinating topic (science of the unconscious) in the hands of a master.
2. Elegant, conversational tone that makes this book a treat to read.
3. Mlodinow consistently produces great books and this one lived up to my expectations.
4. As accessible a book as you will find. A difficult topic made easy and fun to read.
5. The book is loaded with great and I mean great examples to help the reader grasp the latest in the science. One of the books strengths.
6. Great use of science history.
7. The pioneers of the science of the unconscious.
8. Great use the latest scientific research in this fascinating topic to support well-stated positions.
9. You will end up with a better grasp at how our brains work.
10.
We often imagine that every decision we make has a rational basis, that everything we do is for a "good reason." What we never consider is that each choice, each experience actually has an unknown framework that underlies it. So,"why" we think we made a decision may not explain the choice at all.

Mlodinow looks at our decisions from the perspective of the new field of social neuroscience, and finds what Freud and Jung theorized about almost a hundred years ago: that beneath every action and experience that is apparently rational, a set of unconscious processes actually dominates the decision-making process.

But these process are far from the "blood, lust and rage" of the Freudian unconscious, or the universal Platonic conceptions of Jung. Instead, these are adaptive mechanisms that protect us and help us to find a way through the rigors and dangers of life.

For research into these mechanisms, Instead of the "psychologist's couch" approach to self -understanding taken by classical psychoanalysis, Mlodinow champions an empirically verifiable line of research that is far from the "psychiatrist's couch" of classical psychoanalysis. Namely, social neuroscience, with the fMRI as the key experimental tool. This is a device that allows scientists to see exactly what processes are occurring in the brain during any given activity or experience.

In an experiment that gives breathtaking evidence of the possibilities presented by social neuroscience, a computer was able to select an image that closely matched one being viewed by an experimental subject, from over six million possible choices, on the basis of analyzing fMRI data alone.

Review

"McDowell's learned input contributes substantially to the status of this text as a 'must have'...This is an extensively researched text with an exhaustive offering of measurement principles and approaches. Clinicians, researchers, and psychometrists will value the review of scales and the evaluative commentary offered by the clearly knowledgeable Ian McDowell."--PsycCRITIQUES

"Ian McDowell has crafted a real masterpiece with this, the 3rd edition of his magisterial overview of the science--and to put it mildly, it knocks the socks of almost all the (admittedly limited) competition...The description of concepts and the presentation of pertinent material provide the reader with a well-balanced portfolio of essential intelligence...should be required reading for all newcomers to the subject and might well repay the occasional visit from older hands too."--Public Health

Being in the substance abuse field as a counselor I find Dr Breggins new book Psychiatric Drug Withdrawal esp. helpful when dealing with my CT's since they all present in detox in a condition of drug withdrawal from different drugs, mostly opiates. Dr Breggin explains what to expect in a brief write up, that opiate/opioid withdrawal is not as damaging as psychiatric drug withdrawal.

When a CT presents with opiate/opioid withdrawal symptoms they are given methadone and Seroquel for sleep. As Dr Breggin says, CBI is more present from psychiatric drugs that are used in a detox than the opiates/opioid drug that the CT is being detoxed from. (pg 94) Page 95 explains that opiate/opioid withdrawal is more predictable than that of psychiatric drug withdrawal.
I'm glad he has clarified things with his writings. His professional help is valued by all sorts
of medical professionals. Dr Breggin also explains that women have more difficulty than men cause a woman's mentrual cycle can confuse withdrawal symptoms so that its difficult to distinguish if she is having withdrawal symptoms or menstrual reactions.

I can truly call Dr Breggin as the reform psychiatrist. He takes the time and effort to get things in the right order so that people can have an awareness of the dangers that lurk behind the pharmaceutical industry. Key points page 256 really puts a fine emphasis on the role that parents should have in the medication situations with their children.

Dr Breggin has provided a fantastic guide for doctors who find themselves trying to get a patient off of a drug, esp. anti-depressants, benzodiazepines and neurolyptics. The pharmaceutical industry is more concerned on putting a patient on a drug rather than getting a patient off of a drug.

The Body Remembers

The Body Remembers: The Psychophysiology of Trauma and Trauma Treatment (Norton Professional Books) [Kindle Edition]

The Body Remembers: The Psychophysiology of Trauma and Trauma Treatment
You can download The Body Remembers: The Psychophysiology of Trauma and Trauma Treatment (Norton Professional Books) [Kindle Edition] for everyone book 4shared, mediafire, hotfile, and mirror link

For both clinicians and their clients there is tremendous value in understanding the psychophysiology of trauma and knowing what to do about its manifestations.

This book illuminates that physiology, shining a bright light on the impact of trauma on the body and the phenomenon of somatic memory.

It is now thought that people who have been traumatized hold an implicit memory of traumatic events in their brains and bodies. That memory is often expressed in the symptomatology of posttraumatic stress disorder-nightmares, flashbacks, startle responses, and dissociative behaviors. In essence, the body of the traumatized individual refuses to be ignored.

While reducing the chasm between scientific theory and clinical practice and bridging the gap between talk therapy and body therapy, Rothschild presents principles and non-touch techniques for giving the body its due. With an eye to its relevance for clinicians, she consolidates current knowledge about the psychobiology of the stress response both in normally challenging situations and during extreme and prolonged trauma. This gives clinicians from all disciplines a foundation for speculating about the origins of their clients' symptoms and incorporating regard for the body into their practice. The somatic techniques are chosen with an eye to making trauma therapy safer while increasing mind-body integration.

Packed with engaging case studies, The Body Remembers integrates body and mind in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder. It will appeal to clinicians, researchers, students, and general readers.

My interest in reading this book stems from the psychotherapeutic work I am currently doing (as a client, working with a psychotherapist) to remember my own childhood trauma and learn how to rework these memories into clear consciousness and healthier emotional responses. I have just begun this work and, as is my tendency, I went to Amazon to see what was out there that I could read to educate myself about what trauma is and, most importantly, how to heal it.

I highly recommend this book for both survivors of trauma and the mental health professionals who work with them.

I easily read this book during a long weekend. The text, although written by a mental health professional, is quite accessible even to the layperson, and has a number of examples throughout that are used to illustrate the author's points.

The book itself is divided into two main sections: Theory and Practice. Both are important to understanding the current ways we comprehend and treat trauma, based on the latest advances in the neurosciences that allow us to know better our own minds. Much of Rothschild's work hinges on the ways that the mind-body-emotions work together in experiencing, comprehending, and even storing in memory trauma that we experience. This is important, because the practice/treatment section of the book is also based on the same mind-body-emotions connection. So you must to some extent accept the mind-body-emotions framework to see the value of this book.

I do accept this framework, although not exclusively or primarily.
