Review

"This is an outstanding introductory text for anyone beginning to learn how to conduct a patient interview and perform a physical diagnosis. While there have been numerous books on this topic, and some that have been available for generations, this clearly is one of the very best currently available.

With a limited budget, this is the one book that is worth the price, considering the companion website with the added illustrations. It is an absolute must for every medical library and a tremendous addition for the experienced clinician. Weighted Numerical Score: 100 - 5 Stars!" - Doody's Reviews

"If, as it has been said, a picture is worth a thousand words, this text is worth at least a quarter of a million."

Review

Doody's Review service - 4 stars

Reviewer : Daniela Moga,  MD  (University of Iowa College of Public Health)

Description: This fourth edition of an introduction to epidemiology's principles and applications follows the same structure as the 2004 edition while presenting new and updated information and using color graphs and pictures to make epidemiologic concepts easier to understand.

Purpose: Many professionals apply methods and concepts derived from epidemiology. Moreover, the lay public needs to be educated in its basic principles, particularly since epidemiologic research involves human subjects and their participation is vital for valid results and inferences. Therefore, a book like this is extremely important to the field.

Audience: It addresses a large audience interested in epidemiology as a basic science for disease prevention and an important part of public health policy development and evaluation. The author targets a broad group of professionals in different disciplines, as well as the public at large. It is useful not only for a large variety of students (from health sciences to legal disciplines), but also for public health and medical practitioners who are interested in keeping up-to-date with epidemiologic research applicable to their specialty. The author has vast experience, not only in medical and epidemiologic research, but also in teaching.

Features: The book's three main sections flow in a logical manner. The first one introduces the different approaches to measure disease occurrence and explains the importance of measuring health-related outcomes. The second section presents epidemiologic methods in evaluating the relationship between risk/protective factors and disease occurrence and establishing causality. The last section, an important part of the book, emphasizes epidemiology's applications for public health programs and policies. The appendix helps readers link information from different parts of the book and the pictures and graphs help in understanding the text. The organization of the book is a clever way of introducing readers to basic epidemiology principles and methods.

Assessment: The fourth edition presents important updates in a very dynamic field and introduces the new approaches in study design. The color pictures and graphs make the concepts clearer and easier to follow most of the time. As more and more professionals use epidemiologic principles, an updated and easier to use edition of this book is valuable. I strongly recommend it.

Let me start off by saying save yourself whatever the cost of this book is and buy the 9th edition. It's the exact same book and nearly 100% identical context as far my nursing class can tell. As of writing this, our class is 1/2 way through and there hasn't been any problems for the people using the old edition. In fact they actually have some added benefits we don't!

The 9th edition is better because it comes with the answers to the problems at the end of the chapters and the answers in the workbook. So if you're like me, reading your material and trying to test yourself to see if you grasp these concepts, having the answers would be greatly beneficial. However upon contacting the publisher, they told me it wasn't available to students. Our instructor is a busy women and she shouldn't be burned any further to call these clowns because they won't give us the answers to the material we paid for. I get the reason behind this, but seriously I would never recommend this book based on that right there. Our teacher is going to get us the answers, because she feels its ridiculous as well.

Ehhh it's OK. I know this is still a rampant problem in all healthcare fields due to the ridiculous religious ties no one can seem to cut, HOWEVER, it is 2013, almost 2014, and I think the illusion that homosexuals seem to carry these diseases such as AIDS and hepatitis needs to stop, and this book caters to the myth that they are somehow magically connected. I also don't like that at times you need to supplement this book with a med/surg resource as this book is 950 pounds. They do seem to puff up words and repeat the same information a few times, such as saying diseases of the intestine instead of saying intestinal diseases. They also (as I said) get pretty repetitive just like I just did. I feel like if the repetition and word-bloating was cut out the book would be much smaller and have room for much more information.

The book is much easier to read than some others had been.
It's almost dumbed down, like the repetition and word-bloating are there simply to help people with cognitive issues to read the book.

I don't look forward to the next edition, however, as apparently one of the nurses who will be in on writing it is someone associated with my school... so maybe this version isn't so bad...

System chapters begin with embryological development and review the key developmental stages of childhood. For infants and young children, this step-by-step guide uses the "quiet-to-active" approach favored by pediatric experts and considered more effective for this age-group than the traditional head-to-toe approach used for adults. • More than 300 photos and line drawings facilitate learning and familiarize you with common assessment findings.
  • Information Gathering tables highlight questions and data needed from the patient/guardian, with questions conveniently separated by age group, to help you take an accurate history.

I am a pediatric nurse, RN working in a busy outpatient department. I am also a Pediatric instructor at City College of San Francisco. I found this book to be a great and quick reference. The book is divided into sections by systems which I find to be helpful. The pictures are great and they have boxes that will highlight key points and pediatric pearls; which highlight key physical findings and techniques to improve pediatric exams. I like that the book is spiral bound. It makes it easy to read as it lies flat on a table or you could fold it back. I've used the photo's to show a new mother the anatomy of the skull of the newborn. She had questions about her baby's fontanels. I would highly recommend this book! DMG RN MSN IBCLC

I am in my second year of a MSN-FNP program ready to begin my pediatric clinicals. After reading these reviews I knew I needed to purchase this book; I am very happy that I did. This is far and away the BEST book you will find on pediatric physical examinations out there. It is so thorough!

It is full of color photographs and drawings showing procedural steps and physical images in detail (very helpful so you may be more comfortable with a procedure or anomaly before you are approached with one in front of your preceptor).

Things like normal variations and abnormal findings are all given in tables so they are easy to find. Charting tips are offered for every section. I especially like how well the musculoskeletal and neurological sections are covered as these assessments have many specific examinations (each are offered, again with pictures). For example, the examination of the newborn hip is shown with pictures - observing for Ortolani's sign, Barlow's test, and symmetry (all shown with detailed pictures). Each body section is really covered well, it is difficult to pick out one or two. I suggest you click on the "look inside" to skip around the book for a few moments before you purchase it. I'm sure you will find it covers every area in detail. Just peek at the pictures in the skin section.

I just cannot get over how fantastic this book is. The size is perfect, you can carry it with you to clinicals (not too heavy and not too big) 6" x 9" and about 1" thick and spiral bound so it stays open to where you want it. It also has the fold over tab on the back cover so it has the built-in bookmark (a bonus!).

I highly recommend this to anyone who works with pediatric patients. Truly a fabulous find. I don't know why my school doesn't require this book. It is far better than the textbooks they do require.

Update: I have warmed up to Bates as the semester has gone on; in several sections ("derm" for instance) it has a better selection and discussion of abnormal illustrations and photos than Mosby. Plus, it is usually more succinct but still gives the meat of what you need to know. Finally, it sometimes organizes assessment advice and abnormal assessments better than Mosby. At this point I would give both books 5 stars (Amazon won't let me update the rating stars)-- get the book your course requires. If you are particularly interested in assessment, then get DeGowan as well, or get all three.
----------
Original Review: I bought Bates' and borrowed Mosby's Guide to Physical Examination guide, and I have to say that Mosby's Guide to Physical Examination is more detailed (it's also less expensive). For example, it separates the description of what you see in the nasal mucosa and nasal turbinates, giving expected vs. abnormal findings in both, whereas Bate's lumps both together as nasal mucosa. Another difference is that Mosby's groups infant, child, pregnant woman, and older adult assessments close the the adult assessment area, and Bate's has chapters in the back of the book for those assessments. Therefore, continuing the nasal assessment, to fully determine what a pale boggy turbinate might mean in a child, when using Bates one should look in at least two chapters separated by hundreds of pages. Mosby also has a separate chapter for eye assessments; Bates' places the eyes in the same chapter as ears, nose, and throat.

The Tenth Edition of this classic text provides the best foundation for performing physical examinations and taking patient history. The book features a beautiful full-color art program and a clear, simple two-column format, with highly visual step-by-step examination techniques on the left and abnormalities with differential diagnoses on the right.

This edition's health promotion sections have been extensively updated and expanded in all chapters, with new and revised national guidelines, pertinent screening tools, and more information about ways to help patients prevent disease and optimize their health across all settings and age groups. Detailed information on pain assessment is now included in the general survey, vital signs, and pain chapter. A new chapter presents assessment of mental health status and behavior to encompass the psychosocial dimensions of care. Evidence-based content has been increased, with pertinent findings, avenues for research, and references/suggested readings added across the entire book. More than 50 new line drawings and photos have been added.

A bound-in CD-ROM and companion Website include 5 Approach to Patient videos, 15 Head-to-Toe Examination videos, 25 Assessment videos, heart and breath sounds, the Center for Disease Control's pediatric growth chart, journal articles, Nursing Professional Roles and Responsibilities, and the fully searchable text. An Instructor's Resource DVD-ROM and online instructor resources are also available.

This book has lots of errors, we have found at least 15 and will be sending them on to the publisher. It also does not lay information out in a logical manner. This is the first text book I will sell since it is not a user friendly book.

It needs re-organizing with more of the focus on the nutrition aspect since this is supposed to be targeted at nutrition majors. Also the the errors need to be corrected.
By Camper Sam
This book is great. I purchased it to reference during my dietetic internship. I think this book combined with Krause covers pretty much everything you need for MNT.

My only complaint is that the Kindle version has parts missing. Certain figures and tables are grayed out with the statement "Text not available due to copyright restrictions". I've spent hours on the phone with Amazon, all they could tell me was that I should delete the Kindle App and reinstall. It didn't work. This is a little disappointing considering this is supposed to be a "Print Replica". When I buy a book I hope to be able to reference all of it... the Celiac section has 7 straight pages like that! I have no idea if I'm missing something really important. I will try to call again, if they are able to help me find a fix I will follow up.

My class found this text very biased. Ethnic groups stereotyped in the religious and cultural chapters specifically. African Americans eat "Soul Food" and Hispanics eat "Rice & Beans" was too narrow-minded for our diverse group. Would rather see real nursing skills promoted like conducting a proper food history rather than these assumptions. The chapter on Food Pyramid versus My Plate could've been clearer if they'd gone with the Canadian version. Percentages, ratios, food choices within the groups is not clear for educating patients. Overall, an adequate textbook for the subject.

I have just returned from the testing center and passed the CMA Exam with flying colors. I purchased 3 different study guides and this pocket guide was by far the most helpful. It was concise and it went into enough detail without being overwhelming. The CD and practice tests were very similar to the actual test. I would recommend this study guide above the others.
By Janet
As a Medical Assisting student who is about to take her certification exam, I was looking at anything and everything to help me study. I was reviewing all my former textbooks and tests. It was so stressful! Then my school's bookstore got a preview copy of this in for review to determine whether it was useful. My professor asked me to look it over. I fell head over heels with it! It has everything including a BONUS CD that has practice tests for RMA and CMA exams. It is perfectly divided into the important sections for easy studying! Needless to say, the school is gonna be carrying it now! :-) Problem was it wasn't gonna be in time for my test. So I went to Amazon.com and got mine (at a better price). Now I'm hooked up!

Basically...I recommend this for any MA student getting ready to take their certification exam!!!

I'm an LPN finishing my RN. I have a lot of retained knowledge from my skills I practice at work but there is the technicality that I struggle with. The textbook gets so wordy that I find it hard to concentrate on the material. This book helps me tremendously. There is a pre-test before the chapter, the chapter then breaks the material down to what it is, symptoms, treatments, interventions, goals, nursing dx, etc. Then there is a post-test. I found several of the actual test questions to come from these pre and post tests and the tests on the CD. This book helped me attain my A's in med-surg. I highly recommend to anyone struggling with the drawn out standard textbooks.

This book was excellent for my Med Surg II class Chronic Diseases.
Instead of pages & pages of overwhelming information, it punch points the most important facts
of what we need to learn as nurses.
As well as what is important to know for the HESI's
Once I got it, my test scores went way up!

The content is divided into six parts that cover all the major areas included on the NCLEX-RN examination. Part 1 explains the NCLEX examination itself. It offers studying and test-taking strategies and describes the test format in detail, including alternate-format questions. Parts 2 through 6 cover each of the five major areas in nursing practice: adult care, psychiatric care, maternal-neonatal care, care of the child, and professional issues.
