I'm halfway through a biochemistry course using this book (Edition 6).

I care about textbooks. Some really go the extra mile to make concepts accessible and memorable. Not this book.

Berg et al are the opposite of exciting. They fail to provide emphasis and perspective that would help concepts stick. Read Richard Feynman's Physics series to see what exciting teaching is all about. He understands what is amazing and what deserves special treatment, use of analogies, etc.

Berg et al use a very stodgy dry style, I think in an effort to avoid saying anything wrong, which is admirable. Feynman on the other hand is not afraid to make lively oversimplifications, and warns you he is, in order to get the basic concept across. Then he slowly develops the concept to a more sophisticated level, sometimes leaving the original model behind, but that's OK because you take an intuitive path similar to the original scientists discovering the concepts.

Berg et al on the other hand insist on a kind of "top-down" approach where often a subject is introduced with sentences thick with generalizations that make no sense (or only vague sense) until more specific examples or detail is developed later. A little top-down is ok if it is simple and gives you a roadmap. Berg et al do it heavy-handedly, often using terms which have not been defined, leaving you to thumb wildly through previous chapters wondering if you missed something.

Top-down explanations are very appealing to writers who already know the material thoroughly. A best-kept-secret of teaching though is that bottom-up explanations (start with building blocks and work up to complex concepts) is really how powerful learning takes place.

The information in this textbook is great, but I feel like it's scattered willy-nilly around the book. I pretty much utilize the index as my table of context. I find this text frustrating to use, and more time consuming than some of the information is worth. I don't know what this new edition accomplished but it wasn't organization or making it reader friendly!

This is a really hard book to get through. The material is NOT difficult, but this book seems to present in the most difficult way possible. The chapters are not well organized, the language is not easy to get through, and there are better texts on the subject.

The thing that really bothers me about text books on kindle is the lack of page numbers.

this book has page numbers and easily zooms in and out.

As I read through this book I experienced a few emotions. The first is a sense of pride as I knew most of these, then that turned into shame as I was slightly off or a little misguided in my approach. Then hope and optimism.

Ultimately, it led me into revisiting my perception and belief of naps. I started doing self-experiments on naps and charting energy levels, along with creativity, and was completely surprised at the result. A 20 minute nap (no longer than 25 minutes!) was enough to recharge me in the afternoon. The way the information was laid out was approachable and easily adapted into daily life.

About the Author


John Medina is a developmental molecular biologist and research consultant. He is an affiliate professor of bioengineering at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He was the founding director of two brain research institutes: the Brain Center for Applied Learning Research, at Seattle Pacific University, and the Talaris Research Institute, a nonprofit organization originally focused on how infants encode and process information. The section and chapter outline is well organized. Tables are provided for the big pictures view. And clinical pictures are provided with histopathology. I don't think there is a better reference book out there.

This edition is pretty similar to the last, but there are some new pictures. The kindle version works well only if you have a device that allows you to zoom in (such as the Nexus)- otherwise the tables are too small.

Finally I got a chance to read this amazing book. Don Norman treats design very methodically and shows that good design is not a black box but something even more analytical people can understand and apply.
There are many important lessons but I found the concepts of discoverability, affordance, signifiers, feedbacks, mappings and constraints a simple, yet a powerful model to understand design.
I am not a designer by a far stretch but I can now appreciate good vs bad design with a deeper understanding of the designer's intent in building something. Even of design is not your field, you will greatly benefit from the book and you will realize that design is not just a touchy feely topic.

Although, I would have to say that for a design book, the images are not printed very well (in the paper back edition). And the during introducing the core concepts, in the first chapter, the author forgot to include 'constraints'. Also the order of these terms keep changing though out the book. This does not align well with the mapping concept the author so strongly professes.

However, now that this edition is out, don't get the previous version, since this one has far more relevant examples including hand held devices. As an additional resource, there is also a design course on udacity offered by Don Norman.

The good:

All three stars I'm giving this are for the content. Norman's insights and principles are worthwhile and very useful. I don't agree with all of them, but most of them seem sound and the ones that don't still bring up good points to discuss.

The bad:

I wish an editor could convince him to cut this book in half. It's obvious that Norman is a academic and has been for a long time. He has that thing, that ivory tower myopia that comes off as pompous and self congratulatory. I had a really hard time wading through his never ending stories in the service of simple points. GET TO THE POINT, MAN. He also uses psychological terms that are terrible to try and parse (associative activation error? Are you kidding me? How about we call that the "ring ring, come in" error, so maybe people can remember it.) It's surprising that a book about design is so poorly designed on so many levels. Part of that is because this edition is an Amazon print on demand, and the layout sucks. Good lessons in here about how NOT to layout text. Part of it is also up to Norman, though. He likes using italics, I think as asides or illustrations of a point, but it's not consistent, and really just why, man? Why do that? Accept the cultural constraints of typography.

tl;dr

My advice is to read the last chapter, which is a nice succinct roundup of all the main points. If you want more information on any topic, look back through the book.

Too bad about all the typos, otherwise it is a very well put together text that is very concise and accessible. The support site has most of the chapters in podcast form, which is great when you are too tired to stay focused.

The book is great as an outline. But tuts basically it. I know most people looking to buy this book is doing so because they have to but just be warned. If you are like me and you like to read and highlight this book kinda stinks. It gives all the main points and key concepts, but thats it. I ended up highlighting EVERYTHING when I would read so I just didn't read it. (Yes I still passed the class with an A but I wished I had a book with a little more meat to it)
