I used this book during my clinical rotations and as preparation for both my exits and boards. Full of good information including implications for the rehab specialist, things that you definitely need to know because let's face it, you can't know everything when you graduate.

When I bought this book, it was $87.10 and now it is $100.00. What?!!? no.

Book is an excellent reference for those in school, or even in practice. I highly recommend it, it has been very useful in learning.

Review

"If for three decades the late Roy Robinson s Genetics for Cat Breeders has been the cat breeder s Bible, this new book must be the American Revised Version....[The authors] have successfully preserved, continued and expanded on Roy Robinson s pioneering work... Not only does it continue Robinson s work, it actually makes the best guide to feline genetics better!"C.F.A. s The Almanac

From the Publisher

The field of genetics has changed considerably since the first edition of Genetics for Cat Breeders was published in 1971. For decades the discussion of genetics was limited to observations of populations but now geneticists are beginning to look at the actual molecular mechanisms behind the traits and diseases seen in the cat.Continuing the pioneering work of the late Roy Robinson, Carolyn Vella and her team of experts have significantly expanded the scope of previous editions to produce a work which is now of equal benefit to both veterinary surgeons and cat breeders. Their aim has been to make the book more accessible and understandable whilst providing an inpartial look at sometimes controversial and complex issues. The book retains the most important information published in previous editions and also incorporates some of the continuing work done by Roy Robinson prior to his death. A considerable amount of new information has been added in order to provide both breeders and veterinarians with the broadest possible range of information. The authors have not only reviewed the traditional sources of scientific literature and recently published studies, but have also conducted interviews with veterinarians, researchers and breeders.Robinson's Genetics for Cat Breeders & Veterinarians 4th Edition is an essential purchase for all breeders of pedigreed cats, practicing small animal veterinarians and veterinary undergraduates. This fully revised edition re-establishes Genetics for Cat Breeders as the text of choice in the field of feline genetics

"As a hospital core trainee with rotations in maxillofacial surgery and dentistry; this book is a useful companion for providing guidance when determining the indications and uses of CBCT. The fact that it is a straightforward read combined with a fully evidence-based approach makes this text easy to recommend to surgical and dental colleagues within the primary and secondary sectors.”  (British Dental Journal, 25 April 2014)

Written for the clinician, Cone Beam Computed Tomography aims to help the reader understand how CBCT machines operate, perform advanced diagnosis using CT data, have a working knowledge of CBCT-related treatment planning for specific clinical tasks, and integrate these new technologies in daily practice.

This comprehensive text lays the foundation of CBCT technologies, explains how to interpret the data, recognize main pathologies, and utilize CBCT for diagnosis, treatment planning, and execution. Dr. Sarment first addresses technology and principles, radiobiologic risks, and CBCT for head and neck anatomy. The bulk of the text discusses diagnosis of pathologies and uses of CBCT technology in maxillofacial surgical planning, orthodontic and orthognathic planning, implant surgical site preparation, CAD/CAM surgical guidance, surgical navigation, endodontics airway measurements, and periodontal disease.

Later in life he achieved great distinction as one of a small circle of court physicians to the family of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, at the very heart of Roman society. Susan Mattern's The Prince of Medicine offers the first authoritative biography in English of this brilliant, audacious, and profoundly influential figure.
Like many Greek intellectuals living in the high Roman Empire, Galen was a prodigious polymath, writing on subjects as varied as ethics and eczema, grammar and gout. Indeed, he was (as he claimed) as highly regarded in his lifetime for his philosophical works as for his medical treatises. However, it is for medicine that he is most remembered today, and from the later Roman Empire through the Renaissance, medical education was based largely on his works. Even up to the twentieth century, he remained the single most influential figure in Western medicine. Yet he was a complicated individual, full of breathtaking arrogance, shameless self-promotion, and lacerating wit. He was fiercely competitive, once disemboweling a live monkey and challenging the physicians in attendance to correctly replace its organs. Relentless in his pursuit of anything that would cure the patient, he insisted on rigorous observation and, sometimes, daring experimentation. Even confronting one of history's most horrific events- a devastating outbreak of smallpox-he persevered, bearing patient witness to its predations, year after year.
The Prince of Medicine gives us Galen as he lived his life, in the city of Rome at its apex of power and decadence, among his friends, his rivals, and his patients. It offers a deeply human and long-overdue portrait of one of ancient history's most significant and engaging figures. The reader will smile with satisfaction at the arsenal of information Susan Mattern brings to the life of Galen. Whether biographical, cultural, or professional, she animates a recognizable name and converts it into a reachable personality.

We see the physician Galen as a workaholic devoted to medicine. We see him as a committed scholar, frequent lecturer, and prolific author whose work, according to Mattern, accounts for "one-eighth of all the classical Greek literature that survives." He is presented as the premier anatomist of his day (and many thousands of days to follow). And Mattern describes him as a showman reminiscent, perhaps, of some mix of Houdini and Jonathan Winters in his ability to improvise and dazzle in front of a fascinated audience watching him at work with his knife. Galen was remarkable in many other ways, including the fact that he did not accept fees but did make house calls. A physician to gladiators and to the household of Marcus Aurelius, he also ministered to the broad range of people in the street.

Galen's treatments of more than 1,800 years ago naturally puzzle today, such as directing patients to urinate on their own wounds, or using dove dung, snake flesh and other exotic substances. One wonders what specific link Galen perceived between the rub of a bug and the cure of a rash, but that was a brand of reasoning centuries down the road. Mattern says Galen's "most relevant contribution" is his "clinical practice" and that he "never lost sight of the idea that medicine is about treating patients."

This, then is a very good book. But it comes with a "tax" attached. At least 140 times, the author uses variants of the phrases "see below," "see before," or most annoying of all, "as I have mentioned.

The DSM is very clearly written and can be understood by anyone no matter what his or her educational level. It also contains an exceptional psychiatric glossary and an exceptional psychoanalytically oriented section describing the "defense mechanisms." The public is ambivalent about psychiatry but has embraced the DSM because it provides readers with the illusion that if you read this book you can diagnosis yourself and your acquaintances. What most mental health professional know is that this book is a political document as well as a scientific one. It advances the cause of the psychobioligists (over the environmentalists) and the alliance of drug companies, insurance companies and psychopharmacologists. What the sub-committees who wrote each section of the DSM have done is to organize the vast array of life problems that we have long thought of as "neurotic" (and stemming from early family experience) and placed them side by side with clearly biological diseases like schizophrenia and manic-depression. Why? The aim is to create the impression that all of the ordinary habitual problems in love and work that pretty much everyone agrees come from the way you were brought up in your family are in fact biological - and probably inherited - illnesses. Chronic unhappiness, for example, is coded with the "mood disorders" like classic manic depressive illness. Another facet of the DSM that is pernicisous is that each problem the patient has must be coded separately. There is no way to describe the patient in holistic terms. The patient as described by the DSM (and treated by the psychiatrist guided by this document) ends up looking something like a cubist painting by Picasso.

From Publishers Weekly

Psychotherapist and bestselling author Lerner has been teaching readers how to "dance" with difficult relationship issues throughout the past decade, and remains one of the most helpful writers on the topic. With her familiar mix of conversational language and profound empathy for people (primarily women) who are struggling with the most important relationships in their lives, she now tackles the verbal challenges of life's most painful conversations. Far from trite "communication skills" or "assertiveness training," her book offers lucid and concrete guidance on how to speak out in a wide variety of problem situations (e.g., when a wife suspects her husband is having an affair with a co-worker, or when friends jeopardize their relationship by becoming roommates). Lerner moves smoothly through the common obstacles to understanding how we feel, how we want to express ourselves and what we want to accomplish by talking about our feelings. Recognizing that "your brain will turn to mush" when trying to explain yourself in an emotional state, she offers practical advice on sharing vulnerability; voicing concerns, complaints or requests; apologizing; listening and setting limits on how much one is willing to listen to others' complaints and negativity. Accepting that we can never guarantee that others will hear us or respond as we'd like, Lerner focuses on the authentic expression of self, "maximiz[ing] the chance of being heard" and keeping the connection open, despite complex emotions, misunderstandings and silences. (Sept. 1)Forecast: The popularity of The Dance of Anger, The Dance of Intimacy, The Dance of Deception and The Mother Dance virtually assures an eager audience for Lerner's new work. She has recently added children's books to her repertoire (Franny B. Kranny, There's a Bird in Your Hair, PW, May 21), which may expand her readership even further.

In a moment when we feel safe, loved, comfortable, and relaxed, most people can communicate quite well and strengthen relationships. Catch us off guard with a terrible blow from someone close, and our knees may jerk so hard that they hit us in the jaw. We may say and do things that damage or destroy relationships. What can we do instead of these harmful reactions? How can we repair things once the damage has been done?
While many authors have written fine books about building and maintaining good and deteriorating relationships, this book has taken on all of the tough issues as its focus. You think your spouse is cheating with someone else. Your child won't speak to you. Your husband has taken liberties with your daughter. Your best friend says she or he never wants to see you again. There's a terrible family crisis and the other person cuts you off.
Dr. Lerner draws on her personal experiences as well as case histories from her practice as a psychotherapist to give you answers. In doing so, she doesn't promise solutions will follow. But you can be sure that you will have done a great deal to try to help the situation.
The book starts with the contrast of adult behavior to how children behave. Two children become angry in a sandbox, but five minutes later are quietly playing together again. "They choose happiness over righteousness." Adults usually do the opposite.
The essence of the book is to encourage you to figure out what you need to have from a relationship, and to communicate those needs, while finding out the same from the other person. In that simple statement, the book's concept is very much like the better negotiating books (such as Getting to Yes).

Pathophysiology: A Clinical Approach
Download Pathophysiology: A Clinical Approach [Kindle Edition] from with Mediafire Link Download Link The Second Edition of Pathophysiology offers a unique clinical approach that facilitates learning by viewing pathophysiology as health care professionals do. Whereas a traditional systems-based approach impractically isolates diseases to a single body system, this textbook's approach recognizes how disease affects multiple systems. Additionally, rather than covering only a limited number of diseases, aiming for rote memorization of the key factors in those diseases, the clinical approach details the mechanisms of disease. By mastering the core concepts of altered human function, students can apply a deeper understanding to a host of diseases, rather than trying to memorize facts about specific conditions. Because students learn through application, they learn to think about pathophysiology the way they will need to in a clinical setting, by working from symptoms to the cause, rather than the other way around. Each chapter discusses clinical models, enhancing the real-world application of the material. Direct download links available for Pathophysiology: A Clinical Approach

I thought that this book was fairly effective in covering the majority of the material that it did. It would help, a fair amount, to know normal physiology before taking this class. It's not required, however. They will break down normal physiology down far enough for the clinical models used at the end of the chapters. Knowledge is consolidated fairly well. Information concerning treatments can sometimes be a little lacking, but should probably be expected. That would probably fall under more advanced classes or pharmacology.

I am using this book as a supplemental resource for the Family Nurse Practitioner Program I am in. It has really helped to improve my tests scores. It gives a different approach to the subject matter than what is presented in the traditional textbooks. I would definitely recommend it!

The definitive guide to trauma surgery—now in full color!

The seventh edition, Trauma reaffirms its status as the leading comprehensive textbook in the field. With a new full-color design and a rich atlas of anatomic drawings and surgical approaches, Trauma, 7e takes you through the full range of injuries the trauma surgeon is likely to encounter. The book also features timely coverage that explains how to care for war victims who may require acute interventions such as amputation.

Supported by numerous x-rays, CT scans, plus informative tables throughout, this trusted reference begins with an informative look at kinematics and the mechanisms of trauma injury. Subsequent chapters provide useful background information on the epidemiology of trauma; injury prevention; the basics of trauma systems, triage, and transport; and much more. The next section meticulously reviews generalized approaches to the trauma patient, from pre-hospital care and managing shock, to emergency department thoracotomy and the management of infections. Trauma then delivers a clear organ-by-organ survey of treatment protocols designed to help you respond to any critical care situation with confidence, no matter what body system is involved. The remaining sections of the book will help you successfully handle specific challenges in trauma—including alcohol and drug abuse, and combat-related wounds—in addition to post-traumatic complications such as multiple organ failure.

Excellent resource. Very comprehensive review. The illustration is perfect though I guess it needs more images and pictures. Love the surgical procedure atlas at the end of the book! A must have for every surgeon who is working in trauma

Benefit-Risk Assessment in Pharmaceutical Research and Development
Download for free books Benefit-Risk Assessment in Pharmaceutical Research and Development for everyone book with Mediafire Link Download Link Many practitioners in the pharmaceutical industry are still largely unfamiliar with benefit-risk assessment, despite its growing prominence in drug development and commercialization. Helping to alleviate this knowledge gap, Benefit-Risk Assessment in Pharmaceutical Research and Development provides a succinct overview of the key considerations relevant to benefit-risk assessment across the pharmaceutical R&D spectrum, from early clinical development to late-stage development to regulatory review to post-launch assessment. The book first presents interpretations of benefit and risk in the context of a molecule moving from preclinical evaluation into its early testing in humans. It next considers benefit and risk characterization and assessment during a molecule’s journey from its clinical evaluation in humans through its submission to regulators for marketing approval. Throughout these sections, the book offers insight into the role of benefit-risk assessment in heightening understanding among key stakeholders by shaping questions and guiding discussions among scientists, physicians, developers, and regulatory agencies. The book also focuses on a molecule’s entry into the marketplace as a drug available for consumption by people. It explores the role of benefit-risk assessment as the relevance of carefully collected clinical efficacy and safety metrics fades in the wake of real-world use and evidence of effectiveness and safety. Bringing together the expertise of 15 contributors from academia and the industry, this book offers an easy-to-read guide to the various facets of benefit-risk assessment in the major stages of pharmaceutical R&D. Suitable for those in both technical and managerial roles, it enables readers to communicate more effectively across their development chain as well as rationally and thoughtfully embed benefit-risk assessment into their R&D processes. This is well thought out, easy to use and the reproducable activities in the back of the book cover about every scenario you can think of - and some you didn't. The sections to survey student, an important factor in helping students help themselves, is something frequently overlooked.

Without reading the whole book - I was using some of the materials within 10 minutes of opening the box. If you are teacher or parent of the disorganized you will find ways to help support your student in their education.

This is a very useful resource for working with parents, teachers and students. It helps to identify students' STRENGTHS as well as weaknesses. When a student and I go through the questionnaire and then I say, "It looks like you are really good at..." the student is surprised and is much more accepting of, "And it looks like you could use some help with..." The book also offers specific ways to help students develop some of the skills in which they may be weaker. This is my favorite book for working with students who haven't been very successful at school.

The Second Edition of Pathophysiology offers a unique clinical approach that facilitates learning by viewing pathophysiology as health care professionals do.

In her most affirming and life-changing book yet, Dr. Harriet Lerner teaches us how to restore love and connection with the people who matter the most. In The Dance of Connection we learn what to say (and not say) when:

  • We need an apology, and the person who has harmed us won't apologize or be accountable.
  • We don't know how to take a conversation to the next level when we feel desperate.
  • We feel worn down by the other person's criticism, negativity, or irresponsible behavior.
  • We have been rejected or cut off, and the other person won't show up for the conversation.
  • We are struggling with staying or leaving, and we don't know our "bottom line."
  • We are convinced that we've tried everything -- and nothing changes.

Filled with compelling personal stories and case examples, Lerner outlines bold new "voice lessons" that show us how to speak with honor and personal integrity, even when the other person behaves badly.

Whether we're dealing with a partner, parent, sister, or best friend, The Dance of Connection teaches us how to navigate our most important relationships with clarity, courage, and joyous conviction.

Review

"In this highly readable and thought-provoking book, Patrick Bateson and Paul Martin show how play helps animals to find novel solutions and sows the evolutionary seeds for human creativity. They argue that being able to 'break the rules' in a protected environment, which is what play does, generates new ideas (creativity) and new ways of doing things (innovation). By looking at the conditions in which humans are at their most creative, they make a major contribution to what we might do to be even more creative than we are."
Marian Stamp Dawkins, University of Oxford, and co-author of An Introduction to Animal Behaviour (2012)

"This groundbreaking work will inform, engage and please an extensive audience, from play scholars and naturalists to those seeking an improved basis for practical approaches to social questions. The book's originality, common-sense foundation, clear and readable language, and pragmatism are all commendable. The authors, whose landmark studies of behavioral development now span more than a quarter century, take pains to present a readable and direct exposition of their ideas. At the same time, they succeed in drawing bold distinctions when necessary and in forthrightly addressing concerns that span a broad range of social issues. The authors informatively fine-tune previous concepts of play in their successful efforts to link play with the origins of the creative process across a broad biological spectrum. The book's main themes are woven together to produce a work of great general interest."
Robert M. Fagen, author of Animal Play Behavior

"Kittens toy with half-dead prey, dogs chase sticks, kids pretend to be teachers or airline pilots, and their parents revel in painting, gardening and sport. All are examples of play behavior. But whilst it is immediately apparent that play is gratifying a compelling scientific explanation for why it evolved in the first place has remained elusive. Now Bateson and Martin, leading experts on animal behavior, provide an answer - play functions to generate creativity and stimulate innovation. It is an adaptation to get out of the rut and discover better solutions to life's challenges. With beautifully clear writing and covering diverse literatures, from animal cognition, to child development, to dreaming and psychedelic drugs, Bateson and Martin's text provides a wonderfully readable and much-needed summary of scientific knowledge of play."
Kevin N. Laland, University of St Andrews

"An important book at an important time. Again we are arguing over how best to fit our children to become useful productive citizens. Yes, we want them to be happy too, but the framework must somehow be put in. Play may be seen as a nice extra. Bateson and Martin argue it is much, much more. Reviewing a wide range of studies, beginning with play in some of our animal relatives then to ourselves from infancy to adult life they show how playfulness may be at the very core of creative thinking and action. During play we experiment, thinking outside the box, as we say. What can be established is a flexible framework much more adaptable to changing circumstances. In effect, this book celebrates the human free spirit and is full of encouraging examples of what can be achieved. I hope it is widely studied in educational circles."
Aubrey Manning, University of Edinburgh, and co-author of An Introduction to Animal Behaviour (2012)

"Play will be to the twenty-first century what work was to the industrial age - our dominant way of knowing, doing and creating value. Therefore we need play theory and research, of a multidisciplinary nature, that can deepen and widen our understanding of this most dynamic of human evolved capacities - so we can design the best games, technologies, communities and organisations that will constitute this new era. Bateson and Martin have provided a wonderful resource for play/game advocates in all fields of life. Rooted in extremely solid biological and ethological research, they make subtle and powerful linkages between the mammalian basis of play, and the necessary profusion of social and cultural forms it generates, in ways that will help shape reform in areas diverse as childcare, innovative enterprise and drugs policy. Play, Playfulness, Creativity and Innovation sets a new standard for studies of the power and potential of play."
Pat Kane, author of The Play Ethic

"This highly engaging book provides a novel perspective on the role of play activities that apparently lack seriousness. The clarity of prose and diversity of material covered in Play, Playfulness, Creativity and Innovation persuade the reader to reconsider the importance of play in childhood and beyond."
Gillian R. Brown, Science

Book Description

What role does playful behaviour take in animal and human development? Unravelling the different meanings of 'play', this book focuses on playful and non-aggressive behaviour in both animals and humans. The authors emphasise its significance for development, before examining the importance of playfulness to creativity and, in turn, to innovation.

Anyone who takes play seriously will want to take Patrick Bateson and Paul Martin's Play, Playfulness, Creativity and Innovation just as seriously, at least. Not too seriously, because it is about play. Most importantly about a specific kind of play the authors call “playful play.” Playful play.

It is written with reliably academic integrity, dense with carefully researched references and scholarly inferences, carefully worded and crafted, and yet for those of us who have had glimpses of the profound importance of fun and games, play and playfulness, creativity and innovation, reading this book is fun, deeply fun.

For me, probably because I’ve spent at least 45 years contemplating the vicissitudes of play, and especially because I’ve just recently published a book of my own in which the very idea of playful play plays a, dare I say, pivotal role. The book is full of conceptual gifts - too many to itemize in this brief review. Here is a sampling:

On page 5, the authors write: "Play appears to provide its own reward, at least in the short term, by being intrinsically enjoyable. The general presumption has been that the more tangible biological benefits of play usually come later in the individual’s lifetime…” With that simple statement they explain that, contrary to many play apologists, we don’t play because it’s good for us or because we’ll learn from it or change because of it. We play, at heart, because it’s fun. And yet, in retrospect, the authors tell us that those apologists are correct. Play is chock full of tangible benefits - biological, social, physical, intellectual.

Riffle on to page 57 where the authors share with us an almost surgically concise definition of play and playfulness: "Play involves breaking rules.

I have taught Medical Pharmacology for 25 years and I hate pharmacology textbooks. In general they give lists of drugs with poor explanations of how drugs act in the human body. To supplement these poor descriptions they add miserable graphs and tables. The underlying basic science of drug action is often left to the reader to find elsewhere. I usually go to a physiology textbook to find the needed physiology, a biochemistry textbook to find the needed biochemistry, or a neurobiology book for the needed neurobiology. I do realize the difficulty in writing a textbook for this subject. Pharmacology is a collection of basic sciences. So how does one put a book together that gives the needed basic science background, the principles of drug action, and keep the book shorter than a Tolstoy novel? Purchase Golan's Principles of Drug Action and find out! This textbook is what I have wanted for many years. The reader is given concise descriptions of the relevant background for understanding the action of the differing groups of drugs. This book is just what a medical student really needs. I now have a textbook that I can heartily recommend to my students. Congratulations and many thanks to the authors of this fine resource!

This book is a beacon for anyone studying pharmacology, biochemistry, or biomedical research. Contents are well organized and comprehensive. Excellent writing, unequivocal and clear; even people with basic college knowledge in biological sciences or chemistry can understand it. I strongly recommend this book as the "bible" for pharmacology. Several useful charts are given at the end of each chapter to illustrate all the pharmaceutical compounds, targets, and mechanism of actions; as well as their adverse effects. Moreover, it has excellent figures that make the reading bearable and graspable.

Many practitioners in the pharmaceutical industry are still largely unfamiliar with benefit-risk assessment, despite its growing prominence in drug development and commercialization.
