Wonderful concept. Astonishing education for anyone who knows something of art and little of endocrine science. Which may not sound as enticing as I'd like. For sure, this is not my usual reading, but having stumbled in, I couldn't, wouldn't, stop. No, absolutely, I wanted to turn the pages, and as I did, from everywhere in the book, came marvelous offerings of cerebral insight and of the feeling necessary to fundamental humanity. Yeah, a book. Fine sentences, revelatory attention to the art, and by all accounts the most accomplished science. Good minds at work to good purpose. For having read this book, I am a better man - all right, not a high bar, but even so. Plus, one of the great covers of all time.
By Frederick G. Dillen

I learned so much from the strategies, practice and review of this book! The rationales taught me how to prioritize by using Maslow's hierarchy of needs and understand the nursing concept through the nursing process. It also helped me apply my knowledge; respond quickly, professionally, and "think like a nurse." It definitely helped me hone my critical thinking skills. I feel more confident and competent now. Oh, I love Kaplan! Don't hesitate to buy this because it will really help you prepare for the NCLEX. This is a must-have for lpn students and soon-to-be-licensure-test-takers. After all your hard work at school, passing the board exam is what really matters. Buy it and use it! You won't regret it. It's definitely worth the money.

Some great questions....I've taken the NCLEX with using only Exam Cram...it wasn't very helpful. These questions are similar to the NCLEX and it shows you how to break it down to be able to answer it.

A History of the Birth Control Movement in America

A History of the Birth Control Movement in America tells the extraordinary story of a group of reformers dedicated to making contraception legal, accessible, and acceptable. The engrossing tale details how Margaret Sanger's campaign beginning in 1914 to challenge anti-obscenity laws criminalizing the distribution of contraceptive information grew into one of the most far-reaching social reform movements in American history.

The book opens with a discussion of the history of birth control methods and the criminalization of contraception and abortion in the 19th century. Its core, however, is an exciting narrative of the campaign in the 20th century, vividly recalling the arrests and indictments, banned publications, imprisonments, confiscations, clinic raids, mass meetings, and courtroom dramas that publicized the cause across the nation. Attention is paid to the movement's thorny alliances with medicine and eugenics and especially to its success in precipitating a profound shift in sexual attitudes that turned the use of contraception into an acceptable social and medical practice. Finally, the birth control movement is linked to court-won privacy protections and the present-day movement for reproductive rights.

"No woman can call herself free who does not own and control her body."1 While this quote might sound like a manifesto of 1970s "second wave" feminists, it was penned by Margaret Higgins Sanger (1879-1966) in 1919. Sanger founded America's birth control movement and she dedicated her life to providing women with access to safe and legal contraceptives. In A History of the Birth Control Movement in America, Peter C. Engelman asserts that Sanger initiated "one of the most far reaching social reform movements in American history" that transformed birth control from the societal margins to the cultural mainstream (p. xvii). Surprisingly, Sanger's activism is not widely recognized. One of Engelman's goals is to provide a succinct, accessible history of the early birth control movement. As Engelman also points out, those who are aware of Sanger's legacy often place her at the center of disputes regarding the legitimacy of the later twentieth-century reproductive rights movement. While some laud her as a founder of modern feminism, others deride her eugenicist views and her advocacy of physician-controlled contraceptives. Engelman's position as editor of the Margaret Sanger Papers has provided him with the sources and expertise to effectively analyze the complexities Sanger's life and contributions, along with those of other early birth control advocates, in their multifaceted historical contexts.

Engelman first provides the eighteenth and nineteenth century prologue to the organized birth control movement. He highlights the writings of popular nineteenth-century sexual health advocates who brought contraceptive information to interested American readers.

Praise for the First Edition

" . . . the book is a valuable addition to the literature in the field, serving as a much-needed guide for both clinicians and advanced students."—Zentralblatt MATH

A new edition of the cutting-edge guide to diagnostic tests in medical research

In recent years, a considerable amount of research has focused on evolving methods for designing and analyzing diagnostic accuracy studies. Statistical Methods in Diagnostic Medicine, Second Edition continues to provide a comprehensive approach to the topic, guiding readers through the necessary practices for understanding these studies and generalizing the results to patient populations.

Following a basic introduction to measuring test accuracy and study design, the authors successfully define various measures of diagnostic accuracy, describe strategies for designing diagnostic accuracy studies, and present key statistical methods for estimating and comparing test accuracy. Topics new to the Second Edition include:

  • Methods for tests designed to detect and locate lesions

  • Recommendations for covariate-adjustment

  • Methods for estimating and comparing predictive values and sample size calculations

  • Correcting techniques for verification and imperfect standard biases

  • Sample size calculation for multiple reader studies when pilot data are available

  • Updated meta-analysis methods, now incorporating random effects

Three case studies thoroughly showcase some of the questions and statistical issues that arise in diagnostic medicine, with all associated data provided in detailed appendices. A related web site features Fortran, SAS®, and R software packages so that readers can conduct their own analyses.

Statistical Methods in Diagnostic Medicine, Second Edition is an excellent supplement for biostatistics courses at the graduate level. It also serves as a valuable reference for clinicians and researchers working in the fields of medicine, epidemiology, and biostatistics.

There are two modern books in the field. This one by Profs Zhou, Obuchowski, McClish and the book by Prof. Pepe. All four are experts in this field. Both books present the same aspects of statistical diagnostic testing and both can be of invaluable help for researchers (both applied and more academic) and graduate students. However, Professor Pepe has done an excellent job (if I may) using a clear, concise notation and language throughout. On the other hand this book (ZOM) is not that well written, giving more weight in the presentation of the personal research of the authors. As a result there is some notation inconsistency (not too puzzling though) and the flow of the text is not that smooth. Both books have full reference lists, they present interesting applications and give a number of exercises at the end of each chapter.
By StatAge
Another reviewer has compared this book with the one by Pepe but is not aware of the book by Broemeling. I reviewed Broemelings book and have this one so in addition to discussing the features of the Zhou-Obuchowski-McClish book I will make some comments comparing it to Lyle Broemeling's book.

Although this book was published in 2002 it is still very contemporary and useful. Both the classical and Bayesian approaches are covered but the details of Bayesian approaches using MCMC methods is not here so if you are interested in that it is well-covered in Broemeling's book. This book is comprehensive and rigorous and show all the modern techniques including the bootstrap. A published article on a bootstrap approach to a diagnostic testing problem involving a mixed linear model is covered in detail and critiqued for depending on an independence assumption.

What I like most about the are the last two chapters 11 and 12. This is material I have not seen before with chapter 11 showing the types of bias that can occur when the gold standard is imperfect (a very common problem given very thorough answers here). Chapter 12 provides statistical methods for habdling multiple studies for evaluating 1) sensitivity and specificity for a diagnostic test and 2) ROC area estimates ofor a diagnostic test using fixed and random effects models.

Also chapter 6 provides methods for estimating sample size when determining area under ROC curves and sensitivity and specificity for single tests, comparisons of two tests, determining equivalence of two tests and more. Methods are illustrated using real examples.

At a time when biomarkers are starting to be used as diagnostics this methodology becomes extremely important.

The Divided Mind is the crowning achievement of Dr. John E. Sarno's long and successful career as a groundbreaking medical pioneer. While his earlier books dealt almost exclusively with musculoskeletal pain disorders, here Dr. Sarno addresses the entire spectrum of psychosomatic (mind-body) disorders. In Dr. Sarno's view, the crucial interaction between the reasonable, rational, ethical, moral conscious mind and the repressed feelings of emotional pain, hurt, sadness, and anger characteristic of the unconscious mind is the basis for many mind-body disorders.

The Divided Mind traces the history of psychosomatic medicine, including Freud's crucial role as well as his failures. Most important, it describes the psychology of the human condition that is responsible for the broad range of psychosomatic illness. Dr. Sarno believes that the failure of medicine's practitioners to recognize and appropriately treat mind-body disorders has produced public health and economic problems of major proportions in the United States. One of the most interesting and important aspects of psychosomatic phenomena is the fact that knowledge and awareness of the process clearly have healing powers.

John's Sarno's books have totally changed my life! About 11 years ago I hobbled into a class I was teaching in severe back pain---pain I had experienced frequently over a more than 30 year period.

One of my students came up and said he had a book that would "cure your back pain once and for all." Of course, I dismissed his offer as politely as I could. After all, how in the world could a mere book cure my chronic back pain, when an aggregate of dozens of chiropractors, physical therapists, acupuncturists, osteopaths, and even an orthopedic surgeon had not been able to help?

I quickly forgot about the whole thing. The following week the pesky student showed up with Dr. Sarno's Healing Back Pain and strongly urged me to read it, again insisting that it would cure my pain. At this point, I decided to take the challenge, read the book, and then prove to the student that the book was a complete farce.

Quite to my amazement, I literally "found myself" described on virtually every page. Applying the principles in that book, I cured my pain about 95% simply by feeling the signs of an incipient bout of acute pain, then trying to release the emotions or psychological resistance which was causing the pain. And in the remaining 5% of acute attacks of severe pain, I simply take time to reflect on and then let go of the underlying conflicting emotions which have caused the pain, since I have not neutralized them in time.

My chronic severe back pains which had persisted for over 30 years, are now gone, except for a very rare acute bout, which lasts for only a very brief period of time. Thanks, Dr. Sarno!
I was having excruciating pain in my right buttock area and an MRI showed a herniated disc. Well of course after phys therapy, steroids, etc., surgery was the option left. Just the word surgery made my pain worse and I was really scared.

I first read Mind Over Back Pain, then in chron order, Dr. Sarno's other books, this one being the latest. I enjoyed how he shared the new things he learned in each book. I then said to myself this could be TMS (tension myositis syndrome--pain caused by oxygen deprivation to muscle or nerve or tendon or ligament due to brain). I decided to see Dr. Sarno and was diagnosed thankfully with TMS. He did look at my MRI and said the herniation was large, but likely not the cause of my pain. I have followed his study program which is outlined well in this book and 2 weeks later the pain is basically gone. I am able to walk or sit with no burning or pain, even drive, which I had not done for weeks.

Dr. Sarno's conviction in what he is doing and saying was thrilling to witness. And unlike other doctors, there is no "it could be . . . " and so "try this . . ." It is "you have TMS", this is why, and here is what to do. I loved hearing that from him.

I highly recommend all his books. I am grateful to Dr. Sarno for writing these books and helping me be pain-free and I've told him so!

I was NOT a skeptic from the beginning, however, as I believe strongly that our mind (emotion) affects our body. If you are open to learning how you can realize and accept things about yourself, your life, and your childhood, read Dr. Sarno's books.

I am thrilled I am pain-free with no surgery!

Review

Reviewer's Quote: Do you have permission to use quotes on the website? Yes or no

I would recommend this text and the supplementary material to any instructor teaching an introductory course in HIT degree programs because it is written at their level and presents the information in a logical, sequential manner. The fact that the entire text is written by just two authors provides for a cohesive, non-repetitive presentation of the material."

"[This text] is very thorough and provides very good examples. It provides a good introduction to HIM and sets a foundation for the other HIM courses."

I would like to first point out that regardless of the issues I point out below I find that this book is a very good reference manual but I strongly feel that it is not a good educational book for home study. Below are just my own learning style preferences and my reaction to reading this text book. A comparable standard of reading would be reading the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). If you have read this book then you will understand my degree of frustration as indicated below. I find that the excruciatingly boring PMBOK is a much faster read and easily understood book by writing style. So here goes.

I feel that information should come at you in a steady and consistent undulating flow. There is time to take in what you have learned and own it to where you can explain it in your own words. This book doesn't allow that. Instead it is a Tsunami of information that hits you so hard that it could literally crack your skull! Before anyone goes there, it is not as simple as 'just put the book down and think' but more like trying to put all the pieces together on a puzzle but the pieces keep moving around. You keep reading to understand more but find yourself having to reread just to replace what was lost in a infinite series of acronyms and example givens or (e.g's). I try not to behave like a literary elitist but I do find that this book is more of a very strong reference manual as opposed to a teaching device for people who are new to this industry like myself. This book will be great for a heath care professional who already is familiar with healthcare terminology and is moving into the Information Management realm.

Throughout the book, acronyms are out of control. This is one of my biggest vices with this book.

By Andrea Bennett
This has a lot of important information for my college level health class but in my opinion the writing is terrible. The author does a poor job of using punctuation and there are way too many run on sentences. When there are a lot if things that need to be listed, instead of using bullet points or a separate list he will list them all within a sentence using commas. This makes the lists go on for an entire page. His use of vocabulary and sentence structure is extremely repetitive to say the least. In summary, the writing seems like it hasn't been read before publishing.

Review

• Provides readers with the only narrative history of the American birth control movement, including a detailed account of the early, activist years, the opening of the first birth control clinic, and the formation of the American Birth Control League, the precursor to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

• Shows how this women-led movement challenged the law at every turn to inform women about safe and effective contraception and to open contraceptive clinics

• Relies on primary documentation, including press reports on early events, and draws on the most up-to-date research available on the birth control movement

• Offers a reasoned, historically based discussion of birth control and eugenics, covering, among other issues, recent accusations that the birth control movement was a racist enterprise

• 15 photographs and images of the major players in the movement and of key publications and contraceptive devices

• A selected bibliography and extensive end notes, providing an up-to-date source for primary and secondary material on the birth control movement

"Engelman's new work provides a brief and well-written introduction to this fascinating and overlooked American social reform movement and its complicated but passionate hero, Margaret Sanger."

-

The Journal of Clinical Investigation

"Of particular interest are discussions of neo-Malthusians, medical doctors, Progressive-era reformers, anti-obscenity crusaders, free speech advocates, socialists, anarchists, and eugenicists. At the center of the story is Margaret Sanger, whose own story is interwoven with these various groups. Engelman offers an interesting, nuanced portrayal of this complex figure and her ongoing struggle for safe, affordable, and accessible contraception."

-

Choice

"Engelman has succeeded in providing an accessible and detailed study of an important movement in American women's history. This book would work well in the classroom and would serve as a wonderful reference for students writing research papers on the birth control movement as well as faculty lecturing about the topic. It would also serve as an important text for non-historians eager to learn more about this history."

-

Social History of Medicine

"[Engelman] reveals the backbreaking work of activists determined to legalize birth control in the Progressive Era. . . . An enjoyable read that builds on an impressive body of scholarship in order to educate the general audience about the history of birth control activism in the United States."

-

The Bulletin of the History of Medicine

Review

"This book is a thoroughly comprehensive and clearly written history of a pioneering U.S. social movement. Peter Engelman's careful scholarship gives us a superbly rich and nuanced treatment which will be valuable and accessible to scholars and students alike."

I bought this book for a class, but I am really enjoying it! It's well written and informative and I want to hang on to it after class is over so I can apply it to my own life and work. That said, this book is PRICY...so I was thrilled to be offered a loose-leaf option! It saved me a bunch of money and I just pop the chapters I need into a binder for class!. A word of warning, the pages do get folded and bent more easily when in loose leaf format, so just be careful!

I love the option of placing the chapters my professor assigns for our class in a 3 ring binder, allowing me to carry only what we will discuss and review for exams. The entire book was thick and very heavy and now I have a little more than half of the original to carry to class. The monetary savings is icing on the cake. The Developing Person Through the Life Span (Looseleaf)

In this landmark book of popular science, Daniel E. Lieberman - chair of the department of human evolutionary biology at Harvard University and a leader in the field - gives us a lucid and engaging account of how the human body evolved over millions of years, even as it shows how the increasing disparity between the jumble of adaptations in our Stone Age bodies and advancements in the modern world is occasioning this paradox: greater longevity but increased chronic disease.

The Story of the Human Body brilliantly illuminates as never before the major transformations that contributed key adaptations to the body: the rise of bipedalism; the shift to a non-fruit-based diet; the advent of hunting and gathering, leading to our superlative endurance athleticism; the development of a very large brain; and the incipience of cultural proficiencies. Lieberman also elucidates how cultural evolution differs from biological evolution, and how our bodies were further transformed during the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions.

While these ongoing changes have brought about many benefits, they have also created conditions to which our bodies are not entirely adapted, Lieberman argues, resulting in the growing incidence of obesity and new but avoidable diseases, such as type 2 diabetes. Lieberman proposes that many of these chronic illnesses persist and in some cases are intensifying because of "dysevolution," a pernicious dynamic whereby only the symptoms rather than the causes of these maladies are treated. And finally - provocatively - he advocates the use of evolutionary information to help nudge, push, and sometimes even compel us to create a more salubrious environment.

The first part of the book is about human evolution from apes to Homo sapiens with a lot of interesting information about hominins (AKA hominids) and how we became bipedal and developed language and culture. The second part is about how the rise of agriculture and then the industrial revolution changed the health of our bodies for better and for worse. The third part is about how to cope with what Lieberman calls "mismatch diseases" and "dysevolution."

Lieberman's style is surprisingly readable considering that he has written scores of articles for peer-reviewed journals. There is some repetition (some of it on the same page!) but most of it is didactic because Lieberman is a teacher and he wants us to understand the great environmental and cultural changes that have taken place in the last 50,000 years or so since we became behaviorally modern humans. He is an expert on the human body, especially the head and the feet. Known as "the barefoot professor" at Harvard where he is the head of the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology, Lieberman is at the pinnacle of his profession and so what he writes about the human body and the environment is highly significant.

To give us as much information as possible, Lieberman begins in Part I with the Australopithecus apes and examines how they got around on two legs as they gradually evolved into the various archaic humans and finally into Homo sapiens. This early part of the book, about one-third of the total, gives the reader a good, contemporary understanding of the various early hominids such as Homo erectus, Homo neanderthalensis, Homo rudolfensis, etc. and how their bodies and habits differed from one another and from Homo sapiens.
'The Story of the Human Body' is a well-written book tailored for the curious nonscientist who wants to learn more about how our evolutionary history influences the sorts of ailments that we suffer from, particularly those that we often attribute to simple aging. This is a book primarily for the layman - if you've taken a good general life science course as a high school or college student you'll be able to survive the jargon just fine - and it's to author Daniel Lieberman's credit that he was able to write such an engaging, conversation book without overly simplifying the science behind his argument. The science itself is noncontroversial, and Lieberman does a great job distinguishing between the indisputable facts of the fossil record and what we can infer and assume based on our understanding of modern primitive peoples. Lieberman's central argument won't be new to anyone who's studied evolutionary theory and health sciences, but it's probably one that most people have not considered before.

I'm particularly impressed with the last chapter of the book. Most recent science books I've read that are written for a nonprofessional audience tend to either fall apart toward the end or have ridiculous wrapups that have little connection to the text that preceeded it. The last chapter of this book, on the other hand, reads like an extended essay examining the pragmatism of implementing our evolutionary knowledge to many of the potential solutions to improve our health. Truth be told, unless we're going to abandon civilization en masse and return to a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, any changes we make to get closer to the lifestyles that our bodies evolved for are going to necessarily be incomplete. But they will be for the better.
