This third edition of the Internet Resource Guide for Nurses and Health Care Professionals has been updated and expanded to reflect the rapidly changing issues and trends seen in relation to the Internet. The book provides background information about the Internet, services that it provides, and various types of Internet resources available for nursing and health care professionals and students. Our goal is that, after reading this book, you will have the knowledge and confidence you need to use the Internet effectively. The Internet is a tool that facilitates professional networking and disseminates health care information and education to professionals and consumers. A brief description of each chapter follows.

The first chapter defines the Internet and summarizes the benefits that online resources offer the health care professional and consumer. This chapter also lists requirements for Internet access and criteria to help you select an Internet service provider.

Chapter 2 describes services available on the Internet emphasizing electronic mail and how to find particular topics on the World Wide Web. This chapter includes current information on instant messaging. Special features of this chapter include a section on Web search strategies and information on listservs, news groups, and other Web resources.

Chapter 3 provides guidelines for "netiquette" and evaluating information found on the Web; it also addresses Internet security issues.

Chapter 4 discusses factors that make online learning attractive. It also describes the educational opportunities that can be found on the Internet, ranging from informal learning to degree programs. Special features include the following:

  • How various online services and resources facilitate learning.
  • Points for students to consider prior to enrolling in distance learning or Web-based programs.
  • Criteria for the evaluation of instructional Web sites.

Chapter 5 addresses research on the Internet, exploring some of the many ways that formal and informal research can be facilitated using the Internet, including the identification of topics for study via discussion groups, online literature and Web searches, online administration of questionnaires, collaboration with peers via e-mail, learning about funding opportunities, and the rapid dissemination of research findings via online publications.

Chapter 6 discusses using the Internet to explore career resources and opportunities.

The seventh and final chapter lists a number of Web sites and other online resources that are of particular interest to nurses and other health care professionals. These sites are organized by general categories, including career resources, professional organizations and associations, accrediting bodies, educational sites, government agencies, health care informatics, and sites for online publications. A list of frequently asked questions is included in Appendix A. Appendix B provides exercises and Appendix C provides steps for creating a personal Web page. A glossary is included to acquaint the reader with unfamiliar terms. I am so very grateful Leslie wrote this book for those of us in difficult relationships. She shares with candor and comfort how to ask the right questions, seek help, get healthy and stay strong - whether or not the difficult person in your life changes. In addition to a very practical questionnaire, the entire book is an easy, understandable read with useful applications and plenty of scriptural support. I've already personally worked through many of the truths Leslie shares, but I gleaned so much additional information and encouragement I wish I would have known years ago. If you've been wounded or hurt or know someone who has--or is--this book is a must for your library.
By Nancy S. Meyer
None of us is without challenging relationships in our lives, but Leslie offers guidelines for when they've crossed the line to "harmful." Her book will help those in negative relationships determine what part of the problem with another they "own." Most important, she'll guide them through steps of recovery. This is not a one-box-fits-all book; many relationships are so troubled that they truly need professional counseling. But Leslie's book will point out the trouble spots and help people on the road to wholeness--or at least to understanding a way through the problem. I've come to expect lay-friendly yet professional wisdom in Leslie's books, and this one continues that track record. If you're looking for compassionate (and Christian) perspective on this difficult topic, you won't want to pass it up.

This innovative text takes a unique approach to presenting environmental health. Rather than organizing topics around the traditional regulatory fields (air and water pollution, hazardous wastes, radiation, etc.), this book is structured around the choices we make as individuals and societies that result in environmental health hazards. The author details the hazards of energy production, industry, food production, and the modern lifestyle, while exploring our place within the local and global community. Unlike other texts of its kind, Understanding Environmental Health: How We Live in the World, Second Edition tells a connected narrative, making the text engaging and accessible to a broad range of students with a variety of scientific backgrounds. The Second Edition is a thorough revision that incorporates updates to scientific understanding, changes in practice and policy, and important events of recent years. Key Features of the Second Edition: • Offers a concise introduction to environmental health while providing all the essential information about the classic regulatory domains and core competencies in this important field. • Presents a connected narrative, with chapters on the various choices we make that create environmental health hazards—living together with other species; producing energy, material goods, and food; and living in communities, from both a local and global perspective. • Includes learning objectives and study questions in each chapter, as well as an extensive glossary of over 500 terms that have been highlighted throughout the text. I used the earlier editions while studying in medical school and for reference since. This new edition, while more voluminous, is unwieldy and confusing. The cute little icons that used to be so helpful are now just unclear, superfluous and often just silly. This is a good example of a publisher working too hard to make a text better, and ruining a good thing in the process. A real disappointment...
By A. Alexander
If you feel you need a book for year two of medical school pharmacology, this gets my recommendation. The format and layout lined up almost perfectly with my course work. Very easy to follow. (Ex they have most chapters broken up into drug groups like "anti-anginals" "antivirals" or "pharmacokinetics") Too in depth to solely be used for boards studying though.

Doody's 5-STAR Review

"This book has been used by countless nurses and has provided advice for thousands of parents about their children's health conditions, particularly when pediatric offices are closed. To my knowledge, it is a one-of-a-kind book. This update is absolutely needed as evidence regarding healthcare of children is constantly improving and changing.

Judy A. Liesveld, PhD, CPNP

"Our staff of pediatric triage nurses use the Schmitt protocols extensively for their nurse triage in our busy general primary care pediatric office. We couldn't live without it, and wouldn't want to either!"

Diane Butler, MD

"We have used Barton Schmitt's Pediatric Telephone Protocols in our practice for over 15 years. We depend on them to assure that all of our triage staff are giving consistent and accurate advice to our patients. The protocols are well organized and easy to use. Each new edition give us the latest in evidence-based practice."

Even though there's not much info about these cards on here, I still ordered them, and at first glance they look like they will be very helpful. On the front of the card it has a two-color drawing of the muscle, attached to the bone. At the top of the front is the name of the muscle (which is easily covered by the previous card, if you want to do it by picture alone). On the back of the card it has the Origin, Insertion, Action, and Innervation, as is listed above. The only thing about these is that they don't come with any sort of box. The come wrapped in cellophane. I would figure for $30, it would have come with a box.
By Adam Monforton
Just got the cards and opened them and they only give you the muscle's origin and insertion along with action and innervation. I already have cards with this information from functional anatomy. I would have thought that these cards would have been on kinesiology's levers, pulleys, biomechanics and things of that nature not the basic anatomy of the muscle's origins, insertions, action and innervations. Do not buy these if you want them for kinesiology. I wish I could return and get my money back!!!

The content of the book is as expected, but I am highly frustrated at the charts and tables. The print on the charts/ tables are too small to read and when you try to enlarge the print, the letters appear really fuzzy. So basically, the charts and tables are useless. I wish I purchased the actual textbook rather than the kindle version. Kindle really needs to fix this because it is a terrible inconvenience for students! So I give poor reviews and do not recommend this kindle book to anyone...just buy the actual textbook!
    By Noreen
Pathophysiology review is very good. Skin chapters are missing color plates referred to in the text. Respiratory sections refer to medications that were taken off the market in 2010. I find numerous examples where a medication is referred to as very effective in one paragraph and the student advised to not use it in another. It often seems that one person wrote part of the section and someone else wrote additional information and the two were merged without checking for conflicts. I'm currently using the text for class. Associated test bank questions are vague and many of them conflict with the text information. Some don't offer the correct answer as an option. In writing to the publisher with examples their editorial board agreed and will be removing my examples from the test bank. In an email from a company representative I was told the authors have been told it would be worth their while to review and revise the test bank questions as they have received numerous inqiries about these issues. The text needs the same scrutiny.

The introduction of high-throughput methods has transformed biology into a data-rich science. Knowledge about biological entities and processes has traditionally been acquired by thousands of scientists through decades of experimentation and analysis. The current abundance of biomedical data is accompanied by the creation and quick dissemination of new information. Much of this information and knowledge, however, is represented only in text form--in the biomedical literature, lab notebooks, Web pages, and other sources. Researchers' need to find relevant information in the vast amounts of text has created a surge of interest in automated text-analysis.In this book, Hagit Shatkay and Mark Craven offer a concise and accessible introduction to key ideas in biomedical text mining. The chapters cover such topics as the relevant sources of biomedical text; text-analysis methods in natural language processing; the tasks of information extraction, information retrieval, and text categorization; and methods for empirically assessing text-mining systems. Finally, the authors describe several applications that recognize entities in text and link them to other entities and data resources, support the curation of structured databases, and make use of text to enable further prediction and discovery.

The Lab sections in the back of workbook were very helpful in learning drug names and effects. The practice exams, especially the math were very useful.
