I bought it for my kindle which sadly didn't work out. Instead, I had to use it on my computer which is fine except that I could have gotten cheaper elsewhere. Either way, it was a good textbook and a good download.

This portable, photo-rich guide to physical examination for Nurse Practitioners and other primary care providers will help you develop the unique range of skills required to assess children of all ages. System chapters begin with embryological development and review the key developmental stages of childhood. For infants and young children, this step-by-step guide uses the "quiet-to-active" approach favored by pediatric experts and considered more effective for this age-group than the traditional head-to-toe approach used for adults. Other key topics include pediatric mental health assessment and growth and development screening and surveillance.

  • Uses the quiet-to-active approach to the examination of infants and young children, starting with listening and moving on to touching, the pediatric assessment approach that yields the best results in this age group.
  • More than 300 photos and line drawings facilitate learning and familiarize you with common assessment findings.
  • Information Gathering tables highlight questions and data needed from the patient/guardian, with questions conveniently separated by age group, to help you take an accurate history.
  • Charting examples show you how to record physical examination findings in the health record and acquaint you with documentation language and format.
  • Pediatric Pearlshighlight effective physical examination findings and techniques gleaned from actual practice.
  • Coverage of assessment of the preterm infant equips you with practical tools for assessing this unique pediatric population.
  • Full-color format facilitates readability and learning.
  • An easy-access two-column format provides quick access to concise information.
  • Spiral binding lets you lay the book flat or fold it back for easy visualization and quick reference in the clinical setting.
  • NEW! Expanded coverage of growth and development screening and surveillance reviews the methods and tools used for screening children for developmental delays and emotional and behavioral problems - one of the most challenging aspects of well-child care.
  • NEW! Expanded coverage of history-taking and charting, with special emphasis on electronic charting, dermatologic assessment of more darkly pigmented skin, and adolescent assessment, provides valuable, need-to-know information.
  • NEW! Expanded coverage of pediatric mental health assessment, including depression and anxiety, better equips you to assess for the 70% of adolescent mental health disorders that are thought to be unrecognized and untreated.
  • NEW! Family, Cultural, and Racial Considerations sections address the increasingly important areas of family and cultural assessmentto prepare you for differences to anticipate when assessing children of different cultural or racial groups.
  • NEW! Enhanced illustration program featuring more than 50 new photos and illustrations better prepares you for clinical practice.
  • NEW Summary of Examination lists at the end of each examination chapter highlight key assessment points associated with each body system and serve as a convenient quick reference and learning aid.
  • NEW! Evidence-Based Practice Tips highlight useful research findings that guide you in your clinical practice.
  • NEW! New and updated content on congenital and acquired heart disease, disorders of sexual differentiation, and sports-related concussions, as well as updated autism screening guidelines and World Health Organization (WHO) growth charts, highlights important trends in pediatric primary care practice.

I am a pediatric nurse, RN working in a busy outpatient department. I am also a Pediatric instructor at City College of San Francisco. I found this book to be a great and quick reference. The book is divided into sections by systems which I find to be helpful. The pictures are great and they have boxes that will highlight key points and pediatric pearls; which highlight key physical findings and techniques to improve pediatric exams. I like that the book is spiral bound. It makes it easy to read as it lies flat on a table or you could fold it back. I've used the photo's to show a new mother the anatomy of the skull of the newborn. She had questions about her baby's fontanels. I would highly recommend this book! DMG RN MSN IBCLC

I am in my second year of a MSN-FNP program ready to begin my pediatric clinicals. After reading these reviews I knew I needed to purchase this book; I am very happy that I did. This is far and away the BEST book you will find on pediatric physical examinations out there. It is so thorough!

It is full of color photographs and drawings showing procedural steps and physical images in detail (very helpful so you may be more comfortable with a procedure or anomaly before you are approached with one in front of your preceptor).

Things like normal variations and abnormal findings are all given in tables so they are easy to find. Charting tips are offered for every section. I especially like how well the musculoskeletal and neurological sections are covered as these assessments have many specific examinations (each are offered, again with pictures). For example, the examination of the newborn hip is shown with pictures - observing for Ortolani's sign, Barlow's test, and symmetry (all shown with detailed pictures). Each body section is really covered well, it is difficult to pick out one or two. I suggest you click on the "look inside" to skip around the book for a few moments before you purchase it. I'm sure you will find it covers every area in detail. Just peek at the pictures in the skin section.

I just cannot get over how fantastic this book is. The size is perfect, you can carry it with you to clinicals (not too heavy and not too big) 6" x 9" and about 1" thick and spiral bound so it stays open to where you want it. It also has the fold over tab on the back cover so it has the built-in bookmark (a bonus!).

I highly recommend this to anyone who works with pediatric patients. Truly a fabulous find. I don't know why my school doesn't require this book. It is far better than the textbooks they do require.

Review

Sue Johnson's The Practice of Emotionally Focused Marital Therapy is a truly remarkable book. In it, Johnson pulls off the extremely rare combination of speaking in a voice that is accessible and clinically meaningful to couple therapists yet remaining solidly anchored in research evidence. This is the definitive text describing Emotionally Focused Marital Therapy, one of the few approaches to marital therapy that has been proven to be effective. Filled with clinical vignettes and hands-on examples of what to do when, this book should be of great value to all couple therapists. Poignant and well written, it is certain to be a classic in the field of marital therapy.
.
–Jay Lebow is a senior therapist at the Family Institute at Northwestern and Clinical Associate Professor at Northwestern University

The leading couple therapist of our day has done it again! This brilliantly revised and expanded work will make learning and doing this highly effective, empirically validated form of therapy much easier. This book will find a prominent place in the minds, hearts, and libraries of all serious couple therapists, and countless couples and families will benefit as a result. Bravo Sue Johnson!.
–Scott R. Woolley, Ph.D., Director, MFT Graduate Programs, CSPP, Alliant International University

Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT) is a deceptively simple approach to work with couples in therapy because the tenets, practices, and integration are so clear because there clearly is a lot of art to doing this work. The book is nicely written with sufficient technical language to be useful and at the same time eminently accessible and enjoyable to read. This edition provides more detail than the first about the processes involved both internally and interpersonally between partners. The steps in therapy also are described in more detail and the chapters on working with trauma and families are new. I believe that the book would be useful for both those new to the approach and as a reference for more experienced therapists. Recommended for graduate students and experienced therapists..

Soul Made Flesh

Soul Made Flesh: The Discovery of the Brain--and How it Changed the World [Kindle Edition]

Author: Carl Zimmer | Language: English | ISBN: B00LJXK0ZM | Format: PDF, EPUB

Soul Made Flesh: The Discovery of the Brain--and How it Changed the World
Direct download links available Soul Made Flesh: The Discovery of the Brain--and How it Changed the World from 4shared, mediafire, hotfile, and mirror link In this unprecedented history of a scientific revolution, award-winning author and journalist Carl Zimmer tells the definitive story of the dawn of the age of the brain and modern consciousness. Told here for the first time, the dramatic tale of how the secrets of the brain were discovered in seventeenth-century England unfolds against a turbulent backdrop of civil war, the Great Fire of London, and plague. At the beginning of that chaotic century, no one knew how the brain worked or even what it looked like intact. But by the century's close, even the most common conceptions and dominant philosophies had been completely overturned, supplanted by a radical new vision of man, God, and the universe.
Presiding over the rise of this new scientific paradigm was the founder of modern neurology, Thomas Willis, a fascinating, sympathetic, even heroic figure at the center of an extraordinary group of scientists and philosophers known as the Oxford circle. Chronicled here in vivid detail are their groundbreaking revelations and the often gory experiments that first enshrined the brain as the physical seat of intelligence -- and the seat of the human soul. Soul Made Flesh conveys a contagious appreciation for the brain, its structure, and its many marvelous functions, and the implications for human identity, mind, and morality. Soul Made Flesh is a masterful blend of science, history and philosophy. Carl Zimmer weaves a fascinating narrative around an overlooked historical moment - the discovery of the brain - by looping back and forth through the centuries from ancient Greece to the new millennium while keeping his gaze fixed on 17th century England. As someone schooled in the classics, whose college curriculum consisted wholly of the Great Books, I found Zimmer's new book particularly satisfying to read. Soul Made Flesh is far more than a gallop through history. It goes well beyond identifying who was influenced by who, what I call the "connecting the dots through time" approach often conveyed in reverential tones by writers who have read only secondary sources of Aristotle, Descartes or Locke. Zimmer's book breathes life into the classics by allowing the reader to "overhear" Willis and his Oxford Circle peers examining, questioning and arguing about these texts even as they toil to expand anatomical knowledge beyond all previous bounds.
As I neared the end of Soul Made Flesh, I happened to read a Boston Globe Magazine interview with Andrea Barrett, author of The Voyage of the Narwhal and, like Zimmer, a gifted science essayist. I was struck by a passage in which Barrett talks about "the unspoken disappointment of science" - research stolen or lost, specimens left in sunken ships, a life's worth of work made irrelevant by changing times. "I think about [loss] a lot. It's a very, very real part of science, but it's not the part that gets passed down," says Barrett. "We know the stories of famous scientists, but we don't hear the stories of people working hard and passionately half a tier down." Barrett could have been talking about Zimmer's book as much as her own.
The American writer Carl Zimmer has written a brilliant book on Thomas Willis (1621-75), the founder of neurology. Willis discovered the human brain's role and importance, and was the first to examine how it worked.

Willis was part of the remarkable generation of Britons who founded the Royal Society, aiming to understand the physical world: William Harvey, who by discovering the circulation of the blood had, as Willis said, created `a new foundation of medicine', Christopher Wren, Robert Hooke, Robert Boyle and William Petty, whom Karl Marx called the father of political economy.

To keep the Restoration Stuart state on side, they excluded from the Society the materialist Thomas Hobbes, who had said that the mind was `matter in motion'. As the Platonist Henry More realised, `No spirit, no God'.

Willis' book `The Anatomy of the Brain and Nerves' mapped the brain, and was the first unified treatment of the brain and the nerves. The new science combined anatomical study of the human brain with comparisons to animal brains, experiments and medical observations. He identified the loop of arteries that supplies the brain, which became known as the Circle of Willis. The 20th century neurologist Lord Brain described Willis as `the Harvey of the nervous system'.

Willis "created a material explanation of the soul and its disorders. ... He had transformed the traditional three-part soul, which had existed since Plato, into the corpuscular chemistry of the nervous system. The soul was not just moved to the brain but limited to it, and only through the nerves could it experience the world."

But the idealist philosopher John Locke attacked Willis' materialist approach, holding back neurology's development.

Update: I have warmed up to Bates as the semester has gone on; in several sections ("derm" for instance) it has a better selection and discussion of abnormal illustrations and photos than Mosby. Plus, it is usually more succinct but still gives the meat of what you need to know. Finally, it sometimes organizes assessment advice and abnormal assessments better than Mosby. At this point I would give both books 5 stars (Amazon won't let me update the rating stars)-- get the book your course requires. If you are particularly interested in assessment, then get DeGowan as well, or get all three.
----------
Original Review: I bought Bates' and borrowed Mosby's Guide to Physical Examination guide, and I have to say that Mosby's Guide to Physical Examination is more detailed (it's also less expensive). For example, it separates the description of what you see in the nasal mucosa and nasal turbinates, giving expected vs. abnormal findings in both, whereas Bate's lumps both together as nasal mucosa. Another difference is that Mosby's groups infant, child, pregnant woman, and older adult assessments close the the adult assessment area, and Bate's has chapters in the back of the book for those assessments. Therefore, continuing the nasal assessment, to fully determine what a pale boggy turbinate might mean in a child, when using Bates one should look in at least two chapters separated by hundreds of pages. Mosby also has a separate chapter for eye assessments; Bates' places the eyes in the same chapter as ears, nose, and throat.

By identifying the structure of DNA, the molecule of life, Francis Crick and James Watson revolutionized biochemistry and won themselves a Nobel Prize. At the time, Watson was only 24, a young scientist hungry to make his mark. His uncompromisingly honest account of the heady days of their thrilling sprint against other world-class researchers to solve one of science's greatest mysteries gives a dazzlingly clear picture of a world of brilliant scientists with great gifts, very human ambitions, and bitter rivalries.

With humility unspoiled by false modesty, Watson relates his and Crick's desperate efforts to beat Linus Pauling to the Holy Grail of life sciences: the identification of the basic building block of life. Never has a scientist been so truthful in capturing in words the flavor of his work.

In this book (first published in 1968), "Honest Jim" (as a scientist friend called him) or Dr. James Dewey Watson has explained his "version of how the structure of DNA was discovered" and "this account represents the way [he] saw things then, in [the fall of] 1951 [to the spring of] 1953." (The discovery was announced in April 1953.) That is, he has "attempted to re-create [his] first impressions of the relevant events and personalities" that he encountered along the way to making the discovery. Thus, understand this is not a book of historical facts.

Also, because of the personal nature of this book Watson states that "many of the comments [that he makes] may seem one-sided and unfair, but this is often the case in the incomplete and hurried way in which human beings decide to like or dislike a new idea or [a new] acquaintance."

This book revolves around five main people:

(1) Dr. Francis Crick (1916 to 2004) of the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, England
(2) Dr. James Watson (born 1928) also of the Cavendish Laboratory
(3) Dr. Rosalind Franklin (1920 to 1958) of King's College, a division of the University of London
(4) Dr. Maurice Wilkins (1916 to 2004) also of King's College
(5) Dr. Linus Pauling (1901 to 1994) of the California Institute of Technology.

However, along the way the reader meets many other people, both scientists and non-scientists.

As Watson explains, the above five people are in a "race" to discover DNA's structure. However, I got the impression that neither Franklin nor Wilkins knew they were in a race. By the end of the race, Watson was "one of the winners" who shared the Nobel Prize in 1962 with Crick and Wilkins.

I purchased this book recently to use along side my textbook. While the questions in the study guide are really good questions, the study guide is USELESS without an answer key. What is the point of a answerless study guide? If I knew the answer (without using a key) I wouldn't have needed to purchase the study guide to begin with. The publisher's customer service was less than helpful. "Ma'am, why do you need the answers to the study guide if you have the textbook? You can find the answers right there." Really? Why even publish a study guide? Geez. It would be nice to verify I'm actually studying with the correct answer. I can't imagine I'm the only student to complain about this issue. Thumbs down, Elseiver. Thanks for NOTHING.

Great study guide, with good questions and case studies. But I was a little diasappointed when I discovered that there are no answers to the questions in the back of the book, or in the book at all.

Professor Werner Platzer was teaching Anatomy for a very long time using same sentences and same boring jokes in his class every year! Regardless of his outdated style, Prof. Platzer does a great job in explaining what you need to know as a part of the Anatomy course in med school. If you have some undergrad background, you can easily use this book in med school. However, it might be a little to compact if you have not taken some upper division courses in your undergrad. In addition, this book is not clinically oriented and perhaps not a good choice for the steps!

Definitely one of the best books you can find in the market for the step 1.

When I read these two books, I alwasy feel like I am reading my own notes, which means the way the book is written is crystal clear and very easy to read. Frankly these books are way better written than Kaplan lecture notes (which I personally think is very messy and not that easy to follow). These books are also very good for the class as well. Honestly way better than any lecture note given in the class.

One weakness of these books is you really have to beef up the Anatomy, Embryology and Pharmaco parts. They are just not enough. Especially Anatomy and Embryo. Biochem, Micro, Physiology and Patho are more than enough, so just use any Anatomy, Embryo and Pharm book (Choose a thin book) to make your preparation complete. Don't rely on these books for these areas.

Also, you have to use the First Aid as well because, stragely enough, some materials in the First aid are missing in these books. As these are way thicker than the First aid, so they are way more in detail, but, I don't know why, some information is missing in these two books. Not that much info is missing, but still...;;;

Overall, I could understand why the author is so successful as a writer after I read these two books. They know how to write a clear explanation and organize the necessary info nicely.
By Medical student
When I started my first year of medical school the advice my friends who were 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years ALL gave me was to start studying with first aid during my first year. However, first aid for the USMLE while a fantastic resource is a board prep book, thus its ALL REVIEW, pneumonics and study tips. When learning material for the first time during first year books such as these are great for putting material into context, giving you quick access to information while still going more in depth than first aid for the USMLE will, and serve as great study guides for the first year.

Amazon.com Review

In Soul Made Flesh, Carl Zimmer reveals the strange and complicated history of the discovery of the human brain. Amid the turmoil of 17th century England, with religious leaders and monarchs battling for control of the country, an elite group of thinkers used every scientific means at their disposal to figure out that the unassuming putty in our heads was crucial to human health and wisdom. Primary among these Oxford scholars was Thomas Willis, whom the Royal Society affectionately called "our chymist." Soul Made Flesh is as much a biography of Willis and the men who shaped him as it is a medical history. Zimmer admirably sets the stage for what would become a metaphysical revolution and spark arguments that continue to this day about what the mind is and where, if anywhere, the human soul resides: Thomas Willis... isolated the soul from stars and demons and made the chemical workings of the brain the key to sanity and happiness. Just as important, he helped make the brain a familiar thing. Zimmer applies the same dedicated research and quietly sparkling style to this book as he did to Parasite Rex and At the Water's Edge, distilling reams of historical and scientific information into a concise yet comprehensive narrative. The book's chapters are accompanied by drawings by Willis' contemporary Christopher Wren, whose architectural sensibilities made the brain's structure beautiful to behold. --Therese Littleton --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly

The subtitle doesn't do justice to this illuminating book, which transcends the "history of X and how X changed the world" genre with a deep and contextualized exploration of two millennia's worth of human theories about consciousness and the soul. Zimmer, a columnist for Natural History and author of the highly praised Evolution: The Triumph of an Idea, is interested in how philosophers and scientists moved from a view of the human soul as immaterial and residing in the heart to the common explanation of thought as having a material grounding in the brain and nervous system. His wide-ranging narrative reaches from the days of Aristotle to a 21st-century lab in the basement of a Princeton University building. The central figure in Zimmer's tale is the oft-overlooked 17th-century scientist Thomas Willis, a member of the British Royal Society and colleague of Boyle and Hooke. Willis, a figure of fascinating contradictions, was a conservative, religious royalist raised on a farm outside Oxford, who wound up working on the frontiers of science, as physician to the highest strata of London society and as an experimenter who helped found a new science of the brain. In the end, however, this book is less about Willis in particular than about the evolving metaphysics of the soul in general, and the reader is left with a better picture of the roots of the modern understanding of the self as well as a familiarity with one of the unsung heroes of the scientific revolution.

This new addition to the Fast Facts series is a pithy guide for novice nurse educators to the development, revision, and evaluation of programs and curricula that meet the standard requirements of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, the NLNAC, and CCNE.

Applying the concepts and principles of Systems Theory, the guide moves through the development process to include evaluation procedures where decisions are based on data. It addresses the common definitions of curriculum, how to design a curriculum, and how to design courses in accordance with the organizing elements of the program. The guide covers the purposes and development of a mission statement and of a program philosophy, as well as how to select an organizational framework. Curriculum implementation and faculty development requirements are also explored, in addition to educational and program outcomes and their evaluation. Organized for quick access and ease of use, each chapter defines key terms, summarizes important points, and lists resources for additional study.
