I have never ceased to be amazed about the human body from the overall design down to subatomic particles and everything in between; everywhere you look it is amazing and fascinating. The Atlas of Anatomy completely does it the justice it deserves. Whether layperson or medical professional, everyone can appreciate this book; in my opinion, it should be a required textbook for all high school students helping to set a foundation for Americans to have enough understanding of their own bodies (their most important asset) to take more responsibility in their self-care. There are more than 2,400 elegant illustrations and schematics, over 150 summary tables, and effective two-page spreads for presenting concepts. The illustrations are extraordinary in their detail, accuracy, and beauty; these illustrations are actually ground-breaking in anatomical education setting the standard until perhaps we have 3D holograms?

There are 704 9x11" pages and each one is just as amazing and fantastic. The organization of this vast material is also effective giving color coding on the upper right corner of the pages:
brown - Table of Contents
yellow - Back
rose - Thorax
lime green - Abdomen
forest green - Pelvis & Perineum
blue - Upper Limb
orange - Lower Limb
brick - Head & Neck
emerald green - Neuroanatomy
brown - Appendix

I think the value of Atlas of Anatomy is well over $100 so Amazon price is a steal.

Review

"Limitless hope . . . his personal faith in the program, his warmth, and the targeted application of principles will encourage readers to try his methods." –Publishers Weekly

"An innovative, alternative approach to creating a child-centered environment that directly empowers parents and caregivers." --Kirkus

"His voice is warm and fascinating, his experience is one that will bring confidence to families new to their diagnosis, or who may be struggling to find hope" –Library Journal

"Reading Autism Breakthrough brought chills to my body and tears of joy to my soul. This book must be read by every parent of a child with autism who wants a step-by-step plan to reach and transform their child. I was there in person when Raun K. Kaufman's miraculous story began. His full recovery from severe autism -- through The Son-Rise Program that his parents developed to reach him -- changed my life and the life of my daughter, who showed all the signs of early stage autism. Today she thrives because I knew exactly what to do: ignore all of the dire predictions and immerse her in precisely the principles and techniques described in Autism Breakthrough. I couldn’t recommend this book more enthusiastically - not only for those who love a child or adult with challenges, but for all parents and professionals. This book turns the all-powerful principle of unconditional love into a practical blueprint that anyone can follow." ---Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, #1 NYT bestselling author of The Power of Intention and thirty other books

"I learned more about my daughter by reading this book than I have through all of the others I've read over the 11 years since her diagnosis. If you’re a parent of a child with Autism, this book truly is a must-read. With case studies, step-by-step instructions and an accompanying website, it’s an invaluable resource that may prompt you to rethink what - and how - your child can best learn and progress to meet their full potential. No matter how old your child is, Autism Breakthrough can help you to connect with them in ways you may have never thought possible." --Wendy Fournier, President, National Autism Association (NAA)

"Raun K. Kaufman's book, Autism Breakthrough, is an amazing resource to help you right here and right now to make a huge difference in your child's progress. His super easy-to-digest guidance on using the techniques of The Son-Rise Program is a game-changer. Given the program's record of success, the Autism Hope Alliance has funded families to take Son-Rise Program courses at the Autism Treatment Center of America. If you are the parent of a child on the autism spectrum, Autism Breakthrough will give you a whole new way to help your child and take away that nagging fear that so many of us parents feel. My own son is the beneficiary of the principles explained in Autism Breakthrough. I gave birth to my son, but The Son-Rise Program gave him life." --Kristin Selby Gonzalez, President, Autism Hope Alliance (AHA)

"I am a physician who treats thousands of children and adults with all types of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) from mild cases to those that are that are very severe. My own son is also living with autism. I highly recommend Raun Kaufman’s new book Autism Breakthrough to all parents, to family members, and to practitioners of persons on the autism spectrum. It combines the scientifically validated therapies of The Son-Rise Program with an easy-to-read approach that makes it very informative and highly useful to everyone. I frequently refer our patients to The Son-Rise Program, and I have seen the objective improvements in my patients with my own eyes. It has also helped my own son and our family tremendously. Autism Breakthrough will help you make huge impact in the lives of persons of all ages with ASD’s, and it will provide great benefit and comfort to the families and to practitioners." --Phillip C. DeMio, M.D., Executive Director, American Medical Autism Board, & Chief Medical Officer, US Autism & Asperger Association

"If you are the parent of an child on the autism spectrum, Autism Breakthrough by Raun K. Kaufman was written just for you. It describes a fantastic treatment method – The Son-Rise Program – for families dealing with the challenges of autism. In my practice of psychiatry in a teaching hospital over several decades, I have never been introduced to a set of clinical principles as powerful, elegant and effective. The outcomes are truly stunning: children make concrete and sweeping progress, often far outstripping their original prognosis, and parents overcome feelings of devastation and learn to accept, enjoy, and meaningfully help their children. With humor and caring, Kaufman answers the question "What do I need to do to create a wonderful relationship with my child?" Autism Breakthrough not only provides the reader with clear techniques and documents amazing clinical outcomes, it is a testament to the impact of hope, love and acceptance in our lives! I personally see applications of the principles in all clinical endeavors."--Ted McCarthy, M.D., Former Chief of Psychiatry, Mercy Hospital

"With Autism Breakthrough, Raun K. Kaufman has done what few else in the field of autism treatment today would dream of doing. He has empowered parents to take charge again, given them real hope for positive change, and armed them with specific tools and techniques to make those hopes a reality for their children. Our children are not ‘stuck’ with neurological problems. Autism is not hard-wired. I know this as fact, for my own son fully recovered from autism to become the president of his 6th grade class today (in a regular, mainstream school) thanks to my family’s adoption of the very principles of The Son-Rise Program that Raun explains in Autism Breakthrough. As a medical professional, I know that medicine today offers little to these children other than a dismal prognosis. It doesn’t have to be that way! Not only do many children completely recover using this program, but whole families change and grow and thrive." --Wendy Edwards, M.D., Pediatrician, B.Sc.N., F.R.C. P. (C).

"Insightful, personal, and accessible. A hopeful message and one which only a person that has looked through the eyes of an autistic child could offer. Autism Breakthrough is a must read for all parents of special children, its depth will touch you, and practical advice will empower you to join your child on their journey toward achieving their unique and limitless potential." --Alex Doman, Author of Healing at the Speed of Sound, Founder & CEO Advanced Brain Technologies, creators of The Listening Program

"Autism Breakthrough truly breaks through the ‘autism is a life-long condition’ paradigm and shifts hopelessness to hope. As occupational therapists and international lecturers, we will be highly recommending this wonderful "user-friendly" resource with all the principles, strategies, and techniques needed to support children and adults with social-relational challenges. A must-read, not only for parents but for all teachers, therapists, and staff who support those on the autism spectrum!" --MarySue Williams and Sherry Shellenberger, Creators of Alert Program, Authors of Alert Program books, games and trainings

I have to tell you, I've read many autism help books. Researched many websites. Nothing compares to the insight Raun Kaufman gives in this book. I am a mother to a 5 year old boy, Lincoln. We have been on this autism journey since he was 1 1/2, although he was officially diagnosed ASD a month before he turned 4. He has been in speech therapy since the age of 1 1/2, early childhood special education since 3. He started occupational therapy at 4, as well as ABA. He started out with no communication other than screaming/tantruming/meltdowns. He threw things, bit, hit, kicked, you name it. He loved lining his toys up, had poor eye contact and rarely responded to his name. Picky food choices and extremely sensitive to crowds. We've come a long way since the beginning. He has a much broader vocabulary and is even speaking in 3-4 word sentences at times. The tantrums went from 3-4 a day to 3-4 a week. He still is aggressive, but tries his best to control it and not hurt others. Most of this is thanks to the hard work his therapists put in. And honestly, the hard work, I, his mother have put in.

When we began ABA, I thought of it as the answer to all of our worries. Potty training, aggression, eating new food, the works. At first, it seemed that way. They got him to curb his aggression down by prompting him to use words instead. Their primary focus was academic goals, such as cutting, writing & learning to read. ABA teaches our children how to follow directions. I have watched it 3 days a week for 4 hours a day for the last 6 months. Lincoln, go get your coat. Lincoln, share your toy. Lincoln, write an L. All important, but what is he learning? Not how to share a toy, or why he should share it. Because playing with others is fun. No, he is learning how to comply.

According to the Facts about Autism page at Autism Speaks, autism affects nearly 1 in 68 children on earth. Here are some additional stats:

Autism now affects 1 in 68 children and 1 in 42 boys
Autism prevalence figures are growing
Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S.
Autism costs a family $60,000 a year on average
Boys are nearly five times more likely than girls to have autism
There is no medical detection or cure for autism

These are startling statistics and should awaken anyone who reads them to the fact that Autism is a serious medical condition that desperately needs to be addressed from the highest levels of authority to the lowest, in churches, synagogues and mosques, and in nuclear and extended families. To put a fine point on this: as someone who works with students who have an autism spectrum disorder, I welcome research, interventions, and ideas from any place I can get them.

These statistics are even more startling when the field is narrowed to the 1 in 42 boys and boys are 5 times more likely than girls to have autism. It seems as though every day there is a new statistic appearing in the news about autism.

I bought the Kindle edition of this book and immediately returned it. There is no way to readily go to
the monograph on a particular drug. You can do a painfully slow search and bring up every instance where that drug appears in the book but you can't just, for instance, go to the "C's" and bring up "Codeine." The index is there but no page numbers. Totally unusable. I went to Skyscape, a seller I am not particularly fond of, and paid $20 more, but have a totally usable product. I found this same concern with "Williams Obstetrics" for Kindle but kept it because I got a good price and being able to bring up a subject very rapidly is not as much of a concern.

Military nursing pioneers tell their stories

At the height of World War II, five hundred Army flight nurses served with the Army Air Forces as members of thirty-one medical air evacuation squadrons located throughout the world on both the European and Pacific fronts. Their work was not insignificant over one million patients were evacuated by air between January 1943 and May 1945. These specially trained Army nurses took nursing to new heights. Often decorated for their accomplishments, they exemplify the ability of a group of nurses to cope successfully with the challenges of war.

In her comprehensive book, author Judith Barger brings together information that is becoming less accessible as the former nurses succumb to age, infirmity, and death. Barger interviewed twenty-five of these pioneering women in 1986 when their recall of their service experiences was still vivid and informative. Building on Barger's earlier research, their stories and the numerous complementary photographs included in the volume bring to life this long overdue tribute to Army flight nursing in World War II.

Beyond the Call of Duty offers the only in-depth account of the events leading up to the formation of the military flight nurse program, their training for duty, and the air evacuation missions in which they participated. Readers of military history, women s history, and nursing history will find all three interests represented in this book, which gives new meaning to a phrase in the Flight Nurse Creed of 1943: I will be faithful to my training, and to the wisdom handed down to me by those who have gone before me.

Judith Barger's book about the flight nurses is one I have looked forward to since I heard it was being written. Searching for material on Loretta Schimmoler who saw the need for these nurses long before the Army did, I stumbled across the Bucyrus (Ohio) Historical Museum and was told a researcher had been there in preparation for a book. After learning who the publisher was, I quickly put myself on the list for an early copy. The first chapter about Ms. Schimmoler was my initial interest, but the entire book is well-written and is well-researched. The number of people who served in World War II is dwindling daily, so we are lucky that the author did her research while she could actually talk to some of these pioneers in aviation nursing. It was a difficult "sell" when Loretta Schimmoler first proposed her idea, but these women proved themselves invaluable as they served their country during World War II.

Very, very good book. However it got a little too technical in areas where it was difficult to register all the squadrons.

"Pets at Risk" offers a solution to the root of the problem, a hormonal imbalance that directly effects the immune system. Dr. Plechner treats the actual source of immune dysfunction not just the symptoms of an immune problem (such as allergies). This not only enables the animal's own body to recover from the illness or disease, but wards off future sickness that result from a weakened or sensitive immune system. So many treatments only deal with the symptoms, then the problem returns soon thereafter. Dr. Plechner's treatment offers a solution, for pet's such as my own dog, who did not respond to previous treatments.
I read Dr.Plechner's first book "Pet Allergies", and through his help and the help of our veterinarian, my dog lives a healthy life now. A few years ago, I had lost hope after other treatments had not worked to correct my dog Sophia's immune problem; which manifested as allergies, severe skin problems, ear infections, diarreah, and bacterial infections. After learning about Dr. Plechner's treatment to correct the imbalance and restore the immune system, I asked my vet to test Sophia for Endocrine-Immune Imbalance. My vet graciously agreed in order to help my dog get better. There is a very detailed chapter in "Pets at Risk" for veterianians and owners who wish to test (and treat) Endocrine-Immune Imbalance. There is also a chapter for breeders wishing to breed only healthy animals and how they can go about doing so.
Dr. Plechner discovered and researched (for three decades) a connection he found among animals with immune disfunction. It involves a common hormonal imbalance, due to a defective adrenal gland, that directly affects the immune system.
I read this book when my dog was so sick wth chronic ear infections (that were not responding to the typical prescription drugs) that she had to have 2 benadryl every 4 hours--and this is when she was already on a hypoallergenic diet. Three vets said she had food allergies (she did appear to react worse to some foods, and did somewhat better on duck and potato). Two vets said to try an elimination diet. We did, and could hardly add any thing back, as she NEVER seemed to get healthy enough after reacting to a new food to add another food. Well, I read this book in one sitting, and made an appointment immediately with the one vet in our state who is familiar with E&I dogs and Plechner. Our dog tested positive for the disorder--her cortisol levels were less than half than that of a healthy dog. She has only been on the medications for a few days, and she's stopped shaking her head and licking her paws. She's got her old playful attitude back--she hadn't wanted to play her favorite game for a couple of months. The best part is that she will very likely be able to eat well-rounded diet when she's better stabilized. What looked like food allergies was most likely food intolerances caused by her imbalance. Most E&I dogs can eat normal diet unless they have "true" food allergies.I'm in raptures because without this book, my dog would more than likely have struggled all her life with these problems, been treated symptomatically for what was a whole body glandular disorder, and continued to have a poor quality of life. This book is easy to read, compassionate and straightforward. Plechner pulls no punches- the test is expensive, and the medication regimen is usually for life.

The Autistic Brain is the first book by Temple Grandin that will be neither a memoir nor a book on animals. As always, Temple's ability to cut through the jungle of information and make the science clear is evident with each listen; her skills as a scientist and her original thinking offer some significant new insights into the understanding of autism.

Temple Grandin teaches listeners the science of the autistic brain, and with it the history and sociology of autism. By being autistic--by being able to look from the inside out and from the outside in--the author's insights are not just unique, they're groundbreaking. According to Temple, our understanding of autism has been perhaps fundamentally wrong for the past 70 years.

Very well written text on autism and brain science. The collaboration between Grandin, probably the world's best known individual with high functioning autism, and Panek, a well regarded science writer, was a smart move for this book. While I have not read a previous work by Grandin, as a parent with a child diagnosed with moderate level autism I have frequently read about her and have seen enough interviews of her that I could hear her voice as I made my way through this text. Out of necessity, I have read a high number of books and research papers associated with autism, and the vast insight that Grandin shares from her own experience is valuable, as is what she shares about brain science and the opportunities she has had throughout the years to participate in ground breaking research that included scans of her own brain.

These two topics are interwoven throughout the book, and I agree with other reviewers here that this book probably has a wider audience than what the authors may have originally surmised. However, because I have read so much with regard to autism, potential readers of this book should be aware that the criticisms from autistic readers that Grandin mentions in this book about her past assertions with regard to how "thinking in pictures" is a common trait across autistic individuals, might cease but be redirected toward the fact that Grandin heavily concentrates on high functioning autism, not the entire spectrum. The DSM-5 may no longer include different degrees of autism, but even Grandin explains her reservations about DSM diagnoses. Potential readers just need to keep in mind that the vast majority of her focus here is on those with high functioning autism like herself.
*The Autistic Brain: Thinking Across The Spectrum* is hands down *brilliant.* Every parent and teacher of an autistic child should get a copy of this book and read it with highlighter in hand. In fact, Grandin has written a book that will help teenage autistic children understand their differences and *abilities.* And therein lies its brilliance.

The chapter called "Lighting Up the Autistic Brain" asks the question what does an autistic brain look like -- and is it different from a brain that has suffered trauma/injury? Grandin takes us to Schneider's Pittsburgh lab, where HDFT technology is literally lighting up those differences. For those of us with brain injuries, HDFT can illuminate which fibers are damaged and how many. But, as Schneider tells us, the autistic brain is *not* damaged. He says: " we're looking at anomalous growth, be it genetic, be it developmental, etc.,within that process." In other words, the autistic brain is not the product of trauma. It is not damaged. It's *different.* I'm still pondering the profundity of this concept and how the book leads us to examine the autistic differences of being.

*The Autistic Brain* is part memoir and part scientific exploration of the multiple differences of the autistic brain. Don't be but off by the science part of it. Temple Grandin writes in a way that is uncomplicated and direct. She makes sense of a very complex subject. (Her explanation of the "kinds" of autism is one of the best I've ever read.) Because she lives the differences inherent in autism, we come to see those differences and respect them. Grandin calls these different ways of thought Picture Thinking, Word/Fact Thinking, and Pattern Thinking. In the margin of my copy, I wrote: The theory of multiple intelligences for people with autism. Right on!

As a personal trainer, I'm always on the look out for more information. In this business, like many others, one should never stop learning and looking for more to learn. I've also been a joint-mobility expert for 10 years, and THIS book is an excellent resource to understand joints and movement futher (especially when exercise to obsessed with muscle and NOT joints). I know I am NOT a doctor or physical therapist, BUT it does make sense that personal trains must take time to learn more about joints than muscles. Yes, know your muscles and how they work as a group, but the joint have much more to them as they tend to be the victim of the abuse from muscles (be it good or bad movement).
That being said, the book is one of the better books out there in my opinion as an educated personal trainer. Other trainers who are in it for money, women, ego, or like just tell people what to do will not buy this book. On the other hand, those who care and figure out they must be aggressive with education (and not just college, but independent study as well) would benefit from this book. How much? Depends on a)if you take the time to read, remember, and understand the material in the book, b) practice while learning, c) make sure you offer joint range of motion measurements in a NON-medicinal sense (use as a measureable index and NOT as a medical or diagnostic tool) and make that clear to clients. PS: Don't forget to purchase a quality Goniometer (search the internet).

Book notes: Pictures are black and while with red line accents and some red for muscles in drawings. People who are NOT doctors or therapists (ie, Personal Trainers) would be a little or a lot lost with some or all of the numberical data and references and literature referals. I suggest you read EVER WORD and be cautious in what you do and when you use the measurements. The teaching pictures are reasonable, but I wish they were in color, larger, and the text was more friendly.

I am a student in a physical therapy doctoral program and this was one of the required books for the class. This book has been fairly useful in studying goniometry. The pictures are good and the descriptions of patient/therapist positioning is very clear. The only thing that I would add to it would be a quick reference spreadsheet for goniometer placement so one does not have to flip back and forth through the book if you are looking for a single reference point for a joint motion.

"Believing that something is wrong with us is a deep and tenacious suffering," says Tara Brach at the start of this illuminating book. This suffering emerges in crippling self-judgments and conflicts in our relationships, in addictions and perfectionism, in loneliness and overwork - all the forces that keep our lives constricted and unfulfilled. Radical Acceptance offers a path to freedom, including the day-to-day practical guidance developed over Dr. Brach's 20 years of work with therapy clients and Buddhist students.

Writing with great warmth and clarity, Tara Brach brings her teachings alive through personal stories and case histories, fresh interpretations of Buddhist tales, and guided meditations. Step by step, she leads us to trust our innate goodness, showing how we can develop the balance of clear-sightedness and compassion that is the essence of Radical Acceptance. Radical Acceptance does not mean self-indulgence or passivity. Instead it empowers genuine change: healing fear and shame and helping to build loving, authentic relationships. When we stop being at war with ourselves, we are free to live fully every precious moment of our lives.

'A book with heart.'
In the 25 centuries since the Buddha's enlightenment under the tree in northern India, his teachings have taken on unique expressions as they spread from India and throughout Asia. The core of the teachings kept their integrity and directness, but the forms and expressions they took both helped shape and were shaped by the cultures and pre-existing traditions in these countries.
As the Buddha's teachings have spread to the West-particularly in the last two generations-a similarly fascinating encounter is at work. Westerners have the opportunity to read, explore, and practice in a variety of Buddhist traditions-Tibetan, Zen, Insight meditation and others. At the same time, Buddhism in the West is being shaped by our own social, political, cultural, and scientific history of recent centuries-so already Buddhism here looks less monastic, more gender equal, more focused on the inner search for truth than on external rites and rituals, and more agnostic on questions that are not so easily testable by our own direct experience, e.g., reincarnation.
The spiritual marketplace is rich with the extraordinary contributions of Westerners who have spent extensive time in Asia studying with teachers there and coming back to share their wisdom-Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein, Sharon Salzberg, Christopher Titmuss, to name just some of those teaching in the Insight meditation tradition. They have all succeeded in taking these perennial wisdom teachings and expressing them in a language that is accessible to Westerners from many walks of life and spiritual backgrounds.
Tara Brach's `Radical Acceptance: Embracing your Life with the Heart of a Buddha' is a wonderful continuation of this still-new encounter.
Tara Brach is a great teacher of psychology and an especially brilliant teacher of mindfulness, but I think her teachings of Buddhism are reductionist when it comes to their fundamental core.
I concur with what many of the reviewers have said below about how well Tara Brach brings the Buddhist teachings on awareness and compassion to light. This book is particularly valuable for those who are interested in Buddhism as a collection of practical, secular techniques to improve personal well-being and social relationships. It is "accessible", "practical" and "heart-warming". In this sense Tara Brach is a master of human psychology.
However, those who are interested in seeing what the Buddha saw (which is a possiblity for all), in living in such a way that it is no longer necessary to cultivate joy but merely have bliss follow one like a shadow, in realizing the formless compassion of the Buddhas which is beyond the limited techniques of psychology, should question some of the assertions in this book.
The primary notion Tara Brach emphasizes which, while believable from a psychological perspective, is highly questionable from a Buddhist perspective, is the notion that "awareness is the true self" or "compassion is the true self". Tara Brach describes the true self as something one knows when one has the clear mind of meditation (whether seated or in daily life) or a compassionate heart, but doesn't know when one gets distracted or angry or self-doubting. In one passage, she describes being her true self one morning, getting distracted, and then losing touch with her true self. This makes it sound like the "true self" is some separate state, which is then defined with terms like awareness and compassion.

Featuring a wealth of clinical examples, this book facilitates implementation of trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) in a range of contexts. It demonstrates how assessment strategies and treatment components can be tailored to optimally serve clients' needs while maintaining overall fidelity to the TF-CBT model. Coverage includes ways to overcome barriers to implementation in residential settings, foster placements, and low-resource countries. Contributors also describe how to use play to creatively engage kids of different ages, and present TF-CBT applications for adolescents with complex trauma, children with developmental challenges, military families struggling with the stresses of deployment, and Latino and Native American children.

I primarily work with adolescents with complex trauma and attachment based disorders. When I was first exposed to TF-CBT, I was concerned about its use with complex trauma. Clients who suffer from complex trauma, typically suffer from the developmental effects of the trauma exposure, rendering them quite vulnerable to the day to day stressors several years later when unresolved. With their Stress Response Systems typically compromised, traditional top-down skill building strategies are typically not efficient enough to prepare children with these histories to process their narrative without the possibility of re-tramatization. With TF-CBT being a "16" session based approach (with the caveat that sessions have to be mastered prior to moving on), this didn't seem feasible for the "phase based approach" that is more the standard right now with children and adolescents with complex trauma. The chapter in this book on "Adolescents with Complex Trauma" was such a relief to me. This chapter, for the most part, completely covers what is missing, in my opinion, from the traditional TF-CBT approach when it comes to complex trauma. (You will need the first book to learn about the actual approach - this books talks about the modifications based on different child/adolescent populations and settings).

You will also need to verse yourself in bottom up strategies, and the information that neuroscience is adding to the field of complex trauma. There are many helpful resources at the end of this chapter for further reading. I have found that a good amount of time needs to be spent on teaching the "mapping" of distress episodes, i.e. from environmental trigger, to visceral cueing, to emotional identification, the thought development to behaviors.

Sample Sizes for Clinical Trials
Free download Sample Sizes for Clinical Trials from mediafire, rapishare, and mirror link Drawing on various real-world applications, Sample Sizes for Clinical Trials takes readers through the process of calculating sample sizes for many types of clinical trials. It provides descriptions of the calculations with a practical emphasis. Focusing on normal, binary, ordinal, and survival data, the book explores a range of trials, including superiority, equivalence, non-inferiority, bioequivalence, and precision for both parallel group and crossover designs. The author discusses how trial objectives impact the study design with respect to the derivation of formulae for sample size calculations. He uses real-life studies throughout to show how the concepts and calculations can be employed. This work underscores the importance of sample size calculation in the design of a clinical trial. With useful calculation tables throughout, it enables readers to quickly find an appropriate formula, formula application, and associated worked example. The book covers sample size calculations for the most common types of trial design (parallel group and cross-over) and endpoints (Normal, binary or survival) for different trial objectives (superiority, equivalence and non-inferiority) relatively concisely, with key messages throughout highlighting what was described in each chapter. As the journal reviews state the book is "fairly comprehensive in its description of sample size calculations across a multitude of trial designs and analytical approaches" (Biopharmaceutical Statistics) and "should be useful as a reference work for statisticians or other researchers that are interested in quickly finding an appropriate formula for a sample size calculation problem" (International Statistical Review). This is a useful reference book to "dip in and out of", both for Statisticians and Clinician/Investigators with a basic awareness of statistics. The first chapter comprehensibly introduces the different types of clinical trials and the importance of having a clear research objective in order to define the Null and Alternative Hypotheses. The following chapters are also well structured, defining the steps and information required for calculating a sample size for normal, binary, ordinal and survival data, across different types of clinical studies (parallel group, cross-over, equivalence, non-inferiority and precision based trials). Useful references are made to the regulatory requirements including CHMP, ICH and FDA Guidance for Industry. Comprehensive reference tables and formulae enable the reader to obtain a quick estimate of the required number of subjects. Inclusion of worked examples aid in the understanding of the steps described. Finally, the key points at the end of each chapter provide a useful recap of the salient points.
