For anyone attempt an anaesthetic primary examination, Stoelting is a mandatory resource for pharmacology.

It is an unfortunate reality that all pharmacology texts disagree with one another in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. At least in Australia, Stoelting is taken to be the examination reference. It also thus plays the role of a de facto syllabus: material in Stoelting is much more likely to be examined, and material not covered in Stoelting less so.

For this reason, it is indispensible for exam candidates and I would strongly advocate having your own copy. In the end, it is a worthwhile investment given the amount of flesh you already have on the line.

However, I offer two significant points of caution:

(a) DO NOT buy the "mini" Stoelting (Handbook of Pharmacology and Physiology in Anesthetic Practice). It does not have the detailed information required for the exam. I started with the "mini" Handbook but, thankfully, realised that it was not up to par and bought the full text in time to prepare.

(b) IGNORE the physiology section of the text. It is useless. I think of Stoelting exclusively as a pharmacology text, and seek better resources for physiology (Brandis' excellent private publication "The Physiology Viva"... do an Internet search for it; Principles of Physiology for the Anaesthetist, Second edition; and
