The author shows how to identify questions that can be answered using meta-analysis, retrieve both published and unpublished studies, create a coding manual, use traditional and unique effect size indices, and write a meta-analytic review. An ongoing example illustrates meta-analytic techniques. In addition to the fundamentals, the book discusses more advanced topics, such as artifact correction, random- and mixed-effects models, structural equation representations, and multivariate procedures. User-friendly features include annotated equations; discussions of alternative approaches; and "Practical Matters" sections that give advice on topics not often discussed in other books, such as linking meta-analytic results with theory and the utility of meta-analysis software programs. I find that most books on the topic are either too heavy in stats and opaque equations or, on the contrary -- too superficial and merely give an overview sufficient to make you a more intelligent consumer of such research, but not train you to be a researcher yourself. This book is a great exception. I really enjoyed this clearly written book because it provides a very practical explanations of what to do, how to do it and why. The math is kept to the bare minimum and each equation is well explained. It is well organized and easy to follow.
I am, however, a bit disappointed that the author chose to skip some issues regarding them as "too difficult for you, the reader" and did not like the use of the sometimes didactic tone (feels like the author was saying: this is really really complicated and you are not so bright, so I will skip this topic altogether. You'll understand when you are older").
