Robert Fulford, D.O. (1905-1997) was an important, if enigmatic, figure in late twentieth-century osteopathy. Trained at the Kansas City School of Osteopathy and Surgery (class of 1941), he was a strong believer in the "triune" nature of man---physical, mental, and spiritual---and the importance of diagnosing and treating the whole person, not just the physical symptoms. Dr. Fulford's career was a testament to this ideal, what A.T. Still called the philosopher physician. In the mid-1940s he studied cranial osteopathy with William Garner Sutherland and became a lifelong member (and one-time president) of The Cranial Academy. During the course of a practice that spanned six decades he explored a wide spectrum of scientific and philosophical ideas about the basis and mechanics of life. Nothing was off limits---field theory, Aryuvedic medicine, biomagnetics, psychological and subtle energy medicine, crystals. Always he followed Sutherland's advice to "dig on," integrating whatever was useful into the practice of what he termed "twenty-first century medicine.

Dr. Fulford's biography permits us to spend time with a very fascinating person who had an enormous impact on physical and energetic medicine in the 20th century. Fulford was a central figure in the evolution, development and expansion of cranial therapy around the world, and he explored the work of many luminaries in this art and science including William Garner Sutherland, Beryl Arbuckle, and Randolph Stone. His influence on the important psychologist John Diamond, MD is noted in both men's writings as well. Fulford immersed himself in what today is called "energy medicine", and his emphasis on the relationship between respiration and health is important.

Fulford's practice is described in this text and covers intimately his way of assessing and treating patients, as well as describing his adjunctive methods of treatment. His protocols, rationales, and philosophy of treatment regarding percussion instrumentation -- designed to normalize local energy flow and to `entrain the return of the endogenous rhythmic character of the tissue' that may have been lost or compromised by physical or emotional trauma -- is wonderfully described. Dr. Comeaux the author of this biography has written elegantly elsewhere on this subject, but this book is all about The Founder and presents his concepts clearly.

This is a book that deserves to be read slowly and meditatively. It will improve all therapists' commitments to being the most sensitive, encompassing, and vitalistic healer you can potentially become. Manual therapists who might be sceptical of 'energy medicine' are particularly encouraged to investigate this biography of a maverick.
