You can download Measuring Health: A Guide to Rating Scales and Questionnaires for everyone book mediafire, rapishare, and mirror link Worldwide economic constraints on health care systems have highlighted the importance of evidence-based medicine and evidence-based health policy. The resulting clinical trials and health services research studies require instruments to monitor the outcomes of care and the output of the health system. However, the over-abundance of competing measurement scales can make choosing a measure difficult at best. Measuring Health provides in-depth reviews of over 100 of the leading health measurement tools and serves as a guide for choosing among them.LNow in its third edition, this book provides a critical overview of the field of health measurement, with a technical introduction and discussion of the history and future directions for the field. This latest edition updates the information on each of the measures previously reviewed, and includes a complete new chapter on anxiety measurement to accompany the one on depression. It has also added new instruments to those previously reviewed in each of the chapters in the book.LChapters cover measurements of physical disability, social health, psychological well-being, anxiety, depression, mental status testing, pain, general health status and quality of life. Each chapter presents a tabular comparison of the quality of the instruments reviewed, followed by a detailed description of each method, covering its purpose and conceptual basis, its reliability and validity and, where possible, shows a copy of the actual scale. To ensure accuracy of the information, each review has been approved by the original author of each instrument or by an acknowledged expert. In an era of accountability, McDowell and Newell do an excellent job of pulling together instruments to assess patients' health. Although this volume was primary designed for Occupational and Physical Therapists, it should have a broader audience. It includes over 80 instruments with a summary on how to employ each device with estimates of reliability and validity. They give more than adequate details to enable the professional to make decisions regarding the quality and appropriateness of each single measure. Users of these tools need to comprehend the extreme lengths that it took for McDowell and Newell to accomplish their task. Their work is truly impressive. On pages 47-50, the authors do a particularly good job explaining the difference between ADL and IADL.
In addition, the authors do a particularly good job in providing technical details needed by professionals to make decisions about the need and appropriateness of an instrument to serve the specific needs of a patient. Students who are learning about calibration of psychometric instruments will also find the work beneficial. They will immediately see the practical application of theoretical concepts presented in classroom decisions. I have placed this fine book on closed serve for students to use after my presentation on reliability and validity.
Every university library should adopt a copy this is fine monograph.

... Which is suppose is not a big deal for a book that has to cover all of health. It did describe 8 scales that covered anxiety in general, however. If I needed to chose a scale to measure anxiety for an important project then I would definitely see what this book had to offer. If you wanted a book about health scales but not about SPECIFIC health scales, then I would go for Streiner and Norman.

My copy of the book seemed to have been printed with a laser printer and not had the toner fused to the paper. The print smudged if I rubbed it with a finger and I could completely erase a word if I tried to use a highlighter pen to highlight it! It was, "Printed in the United States of America on acid-free paper". Oopsie. Maybe they could learn something from Alphapress and have their books printed on demand by Amazon!

The introduction to the Anxiety chapter made a nonsensical and unreferenced distinction between anxiety and fear. It also makes naive comments about who uses dimensional and categorical scales.

I recommend that if you are thinking of getting this book, that you first consider Measures for Clinical Practice and Research by Fischer and Corcoran, also published by OUP, but printed with actual ink. It is huge, 2 volumes, about 1400 pages, and has lots more scales.

Review

Colonial Pathologies does the work that many colonial histories profess to do but rarely carry out: it provides us with a meticulous, dynamic, and grounded analysis of how political rationalities were honed and colonial and colonized subjectivities were formed through the changing medical perceptions and practices of U.S. imperial policy. Not least, it demonstrates how Philippines colonial public health regimes provided the template for subsequent healthcare in the Philippines, in the United States, and in international health services more broadly.”—Ann Laura Stoler, editor of Haunted by Empire: Geographies of Intimacy in North American History

“An imaginative and well-informed study of what might be called the bodily dimension of imperial relationships in the Philippines. Warwick Anderson explores the subjective and multidimensional aspects of the formally humane and objective realm of tropical public health, illuminating the American colonial experience and foreshadowing ambiguities and paradoxes in what we have come to call global health.”—Charles E. Rosenberg, author of No Other Gods: On Science and American Social Thought

“It’s difficult to overstate the significance of this book. Its account of hygiene as the means for establishing ‘biomedical citizenship’ in the Philippines under U.S. rule is carefully crafted and powerfully argued. Sympathetically deconstructing the assertiveness and delusions of white colonial medical practitioners beset by the specters of native bodily excess, Warwick Anderson shows how race and biology defined civic identities in the colony and the metropole alike. A path-breaking work on imperial medicine, it is certain to attract a wide readership.”—Vicente L. Rafael, author of The Promise of the Foreign: Nationalism and the Technics of Translation in the Spanish Philippines

Colonial medicine has been a major issue of debate in social science these years. One reason for that is the emergence of globalization that elevates previous colonies to the focus of attention because of their roles in the global system of production and their peculiar political configurations. No longer subliminal, these ex-colonies however pose intriguing but difficult questions regarding various aspects of (post-)modernity. How did they deal with the so-called colonial legacy? How did the modernity defined in "the West" mean to them? What insights can we get by looking at the disciplinary process that the colonized people embraced, or worse, endured? Or, for this book, what is the relations between the medical and public health measures in colony and those in metropolis?

It is easy for studies of this kind to fall back into either a progressivist eurocentric argument (such as Basalla's diffusionism) or a normative pluralistic claim. The former refers to a pattern of diffusion of knowledge from the center (read Europe) to the periphery (the rest of the world); the latter means that we need to appreciate the achievements not only in the center but also in the periphery. But Anderson pushes the claim further. He challenges the logic of the center/periphery division and argues that in fact, the center of colonial force may be the periphery of knowledge production. The conceptual hierarachy is shaken and replaced with a more reciprocally dynamic and interactive notion. Think about the medical knowledge that was obtained in the Philippines but was later applied in America.

Wow! I bought this book a couple of months ago, but just got around to opening it up last night to study for a histology test. I expected to find a slew of labelled photomicrographs to review, but this book is actually so much more! It is really an anatomy, physiology and histology text all in one - and it is done very very well.

The book is divided into 24 chapters, with chapters by system, tissue type, basic cell biology as well as tissue/slide preparation. Each chapter covers the anatomy and physiology of the system or tissue in question extremely well. The text gets right to the point, but is still very complete in its explanations. Within each paragraph, key words are bolded in red, so you can quickly find the exact topic you are interested in within a subject. All topics are supplemented with fully labelled light and electron photomicrographs of each structure, tissue and cell. Illustrations also accompany a majority of the micrographs to clarify things.

All illustrations and micrographs are thoroughly labelled. Within text pictures are typically 1/4 to 1/2 page in size, and each chapter has its own set of full-page color plates for even better up-close visualization and study. The full-page color photomicrographs at the end of each chapter are fully labelled, but go even further than that with exact descriptions of each label on the opposing page. This is really amazing, because, for instance, on a slide of the kidney that I was studying, not only were the proximal and distal tubules and collecting ducts labelled, there were also accompanying descriptions on the opposing page as to why one was different from another in these very similar looking structures.

I am just barely begining to use this textbook in my speech pathology courses, but I do have one major complaint. The software, Anatesse, and studywares are not mac compatible. I was able to get the studywares cd to work on my mac by testing it out on a trial version of crossover mac, but the anatesse only shows the uninstall file..... Very annoying. No where on any of the info does it say what operating system is required. In addition on of my classmates is having issues running it on vista as well.... Fortunatly Seikel the main author is the head of the department I am in so I will be able to complain to someone.....

I don't say this lightly, but this book should be thrown in the trash. The sheer amount of incorrect information and typos should already give you a warning. The information is very unclear, often runs around in circles, and you reread the pages only to realize that at the end you haven't learned a thing. What the author does often is explain what anatomical structures are next to where in a rambling fashion; all without providing enough diagrams and pictures that correspond with the text. Sometimes the information contradicts what's been stated before, so you're left wondering what the hell is correct and what's not. It is absolutely maddening and nearly impossible to learn from this book. The few diagrams and pictures that are in the book are unhelpful, often incorrect, and unclear - whoever took pictures and drew diagrams for this textbook did not do their job. I'll give one example of many: in the ear chapter, the artist points to the cymba concha and labels it the triangular fossa. I had to check at least 3 other texts to confirm that this textbook got it wrong, and yes, it was wrong! I had to rely on my old anatomy textbooks and even bought the Netter's Head and Neck Anatomy for Dentistry text to supplement this craptastic excuse for a textbook. Even Barron's Anatomy and Physiology review book was more complete and clear than this one. I just don't understand why any professor would ever use this book! DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. You're going to end up learning the wrong information.

This book was excellent in preparing for the CMSA certification review course.
I passed on the first try. I also used the Anderson CE review course for case management that goes along with this book. It provides the page number for finding the answer to every question. The other book that I found very helpful was the CCM certification study guide. It had lots of questions and asked each question so many times that you had no choice but to learn the material. When I took the exam there were probably 2 questions that were familiar to me; but, do to all of the practice exams that I took and reading the CMSA core curriculum for case management 2 times: I was extremely well prepared. My advice to anyone preparing for the CMSA certification examination for the CCM certification. Read the CMSA core curriculum for case management and practice as many examination questions as you can find over and over again. Good Luck.

I just took, and passed, CCMC's CCM exam on the first try. Written in outline form, this book packs a lot of punch. Not one single word is wasted. Every chapter is relevant, and contains an amazing amount of detail. My copy is now heavily highlighted, and on my office desk as a reference book. I would highly recommend it to anyone prepping for the exam.
