I am just barely begining to use this textbook in my speech pathology courses, but I do have one major complaint. The software, Anatesse, and studywares are not mac compatible. I was able to get the studywares cd to work on my mac by testing it out on a trial version of crossover mac, but the anatesse only shows the uninstall file..... Very annoying. No where on any of the info does it say what operating system is required. In addition on of my classmates is having issues running it on vista as well.... Fortunatly Seikel the main author is the head of the department I am in so I will be able to complain to someone.....
By K. Piper-Fangman
I don't say this lightly, but this book should be thrown in the trash. The sheer amount of incorrect information and typos should already give you a warning. The information is very unclear, often runs around in circles, and you reread the pages only to realize that at the end you haven't learned a thing. What the author does often is explain what anatomical structures are next to where in a rambling fashion; all without providing enough diagrams and pictures that correspond with the text. Sometimes the information contradicts what's been stated before, so you're left wondering what the hell is correct and what's not. It is absolutely maddening and nearly impossible to learn from this book. The few diagrams and pictures that are in the book are unhelpful, often incorrect, and unclear - whoever took pictures and drew diagrams for this textbook did not do their job. I'll give one example of many: in the ear chapter, the artist points to the cymba concha and labels it the triangular fossa. I had to check at least 3 other texts to confirm that this textbook got it wrong, and yes, it was wrong! I had to rely on my old anatomy textbooks and even bought the Netter's Head and Neck Anatomy for Dentistry text to supplement this craptastic excuse for a textbook. Even Barron's Anatomy and Physiology review book was more complete and clear than this one. I just don't understand why any professor would ever use this book! DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. You're going to end up learning the wrong information.

Madness and Memory

In 1997, Stanley B. Prusiner received a Nobel Prize, the world's most prestigious award for achievement in physiology or medicine. That he was the sole recipient of the award for the year was entirely appropriate. His struggle to identify the agent responsible for ravaging the brains of animals suffering from scrapie and mad cow disease, and of humans with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, had been waged largely alone and in some cases in the face of strenuous disagreement.

In this book, Prusiner tells the remarkable story of his discovery of prions—infectious proteins that replicate and cause disease but surprisingly contain no genetic material—and reveals how superb and meticulous science is actually practiced with talented teams of researchers who persevere. He recounts the frustrations and rewards of years of research and offers fascinating portraits of his peers as they raced to discover the causes of fatal brain diseases. Prusiner’s hypothesis, once considered heresy, now stands as accepted science and the basis for developing diagnoses and eventual cures. He closes with a meditation on the legacy of his discovery: What will it take to cure Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Lou Gehrig’s and other devastating diseases of the brain?

The prion story changed our understanding of neurological disease, not only the infectious type {CJD, "mad cow"}, but also the common Alzheimer's dementia. The key to this revolution was realization of the importance of the folding of amino-acid chains for the correct function of proteins and how this could change in disease.

Looking back, it seems curious how resistant the scientific community was to this idea. The fact that proteins had four levels of structure {the amino-acid sequence coded by the gene, the hydrogen bonding, the folding, and the fitting together of separate chains into dimers, trimers, etc} was basic: I learned this in medical school 50 years ago. But the dogma insisted that if something pathologically significant was wrong with a protein, it could only come from the gene, the DNA coding for the amino-acid sequence. And dogma is very had to displace. Anyone advancing a radically new idea will not merely have their data and interpretations challenged: they will be subject to vilification and personal attack.

For the lay reader, this book will give telling insight into the pettiness, and downright viciousness, of scientists competing in a high-profile area. Those of us who are practising scientists ourselves will by-and-large be aware of the sabotage and dirty dealing which is commonplace in scientific politics, so the book will not shock us. Instead, it will give an inspiring insight into how a person with dogged persistence can eventually succeed by sticking to his convictions and answering every criticism with solid data from rigorous experiments.

The writing of the book has attracted comment from some reviewers. It is not up to the standard of literary fiction, but fully adequate to the task of conveying a tale about science.

Review

"Perhaps not since James D. Watson’s 1968 memoir The Double Helix has the down and dirty business of world-class science been given such an airing . . . We are free to enjoy the spectacle of top gladiators at work in an utterly fascinating arena."—Abigail Zuger, M.D., New York Times
(Abigail Zuger, M.D. New York Times)

“Stanley Prusiner is a brilliant scientist whose boldness and tenacity enabled him, against all odds and despite near-universal skepticism, to discover and prove the importance of a new class of disease-producing agents—prions—a discovery as fundamental as that of bacteria and viruses. Prions, by subverting the brain’s own proteins, may play a crucial role in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other neurodegenerative diseases—and perhaps afford a clue to their prevention. Madness and Memory is the story of one of the most important discoveries in recent medical history, and it is also a vivid and compelling portrait of a life in science.”—Oliver Sacks
(Oliver Sacks 2013-10-11)

"A wonderful account of the multiple obstacles confronted by Stanley Prusiner as he transformed an unconventional hypothesis into one of the greatest discoveries of modern science."—Robert J. Alpern, M.D., Dean, Yale University School of Medicine
(Robert J. Alpern 2013-09-23)

“A strikingly meticulous book and a powerful effort from the heart to tell a large truth in a personal tale.”—Herman Wouk, author of The Winds of War and War and Remembrance
(Herman Wouk 2013-10-01)

“A unique story, yet many elements will be familiar to scientists in competitive fields. It is a cautionary tale about how vicious science can be, but . . . it could also encourage others to stick to their beliefs and rely on careful science as they meet obstacles.”— Ellen Daniell, author of Every Other Thursday: Stories and Strategies from Successful Women Scientists
(Ellen Daniell 2013-06-28)

“Represents a unique and important contribution.”—Daniel P. Perl, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
(Daniel P. Perl 2013-08-28)

“. . . the story hinges on Prusiner’s discovery of prions, ‘a new biological principle of disease’. It is a remarkable tale . . . [a] testament to the staggering intellect and courage involved in one of the most exciting discoveries since the DNA double helix.”—Giovanna Mallucci, Nature
(Giovanna Mallucci Nature)

"Prusiner does not give us the idealistic, sanitized picture of modern scientific research where cooperation and collaboration are commonplace. Rather, the author shows science today as it really is: competitive, crowded with too many people trying to get funding, involving sometimes massive egos at play instead of the search for truth, and rife with naysayers’ refusal to accept new ideas in spite of the data. Prusiner shows the science game as it is too often played today, and we are all better for his sharing."—Donald F. Calbreath, New York Journal of Books
(Donald F. Calbreath New York Journal of Books)

"Madness and Memory is a fascinating account of scientific research, discovery, and controversy that will be of interest to many readers within neurology and neuroscience, as well as anyone drawn to the creative process."—Neurology Today
(Christopher M. Filley Neurology Today)

By identifying the structure of DNA, the molecule of life, Francis Crick and James Watson revolutionized biochemistry and won themselves a Nobel Prize. At the time, Watson was only 24, a young scientist hungry to make his mark. His uncompromisingly honest account of the heady days of their thrilling sprint against other world-class researchers to solve one of science's greatest mysteries gives a dazzlingly clear picture of a world of brilliant scientists with great gifts, very human ambitions, and bitter rivalries.

With humility unspoiled by false modesty, Watson relates his and Crick's desperate efforts to beat Linus Pauling to the Holy Grail of life sciences: the identification of the basic building block of life. Never has a scientist been so truthful in capturing in words the flavor of his work.

In this book (first published in 1968), "Honest Jim" (as a scientist friend called him) or Dr. James Dewey Watson has explained his "version of how the structure of DNA was discovered" and "this account represents the way [he] saw things then, in [the fall of] 1951 [to the spring of] 1953." (The discovery was announced in April 1953.) That is, he has "attempted to re-create [his] first impressions of the relevant events and personalities" that he encountered along the way to making the discovery. Thus, understand this is not a book of historical facts.

Also, because of the personal nature of this book Watson states that "many of the comments [that he makes] may seem one-sided and unfair, but this is often the case in the incomplete and hurried way in which human beings decide to like or dislike a new idea or [a new] acquaintance."

This book revolves around five main people:

(1) Dr. Francis Crick (1916 to 2004) of the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, England
(2) Dr. James Watson (born 1928) also of the Cavendish Laboratory
(3) Dr. Rosalind Franklin (1920 to 1958) of King's College, a division of the University of London
(4) Dr. Maurice Wilkins (1916 to 2004) also of King's College
(5) Dr. Linus Pauling (1901 to 1994) of the California Institute of Technology.

However, along the way the reader meets many other people, both scientists and non-scientists.

As Watson explains, the above five people are in a "race" to discover DNA's structure. However, I got the impression that neither Franklin nor Wilkins knew they were in a race. By the end of the race, Watson was "one of the winners" who shared the Nobel Prize in 1962 with Crick and Wilkins.

Amazon.com Review

"Science seldom proceeds in the straightforward logical manner imagined by outsiders," writes James Watson in The Double Helix, his account of his codiscovery (along with Francis Crick) of the structure of DNA. Watson and Crick won Nobel Prizes for their work, and their names are memorized by biology students around the world. But as in all of history, the real story behind the deceptively simple outcome was messy, intense, and sometimes truly hilarious. To preserve the "real" story for the world, James Watson attempted to record his first impressions as soon after the events of 1951-1953 as possible, with all their unpleasant realities and "spirit of adventure" intact.

Watson holds nothing back when revealing the petty sniping and backbiting among his colleagues, while acknowledging that he himself was a willing participant in the melodrama. In particular, Watson reveals his mixed feelings about his famous colleague in discovery, Francis Crick, who many thought of as an arrogant man who talked too much, and whose brilliance was appreciated by few. This is the joy of The Double Helix--instead of a chronicle of stainless-steel heroes toiling away in their sparkling labs, Watson's chronicle gives readers an idea of what living science is like, warts and all. The Double Helix is a startling window into the scientific method, full of insight and wit, and packed with the kind of science anecdotes that are told and retold in the halls of universities and laboratories everywhere. It's the stuff of legends. --Therese Littleton --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Peter J. Russell received his B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Sussex, U.K., in 1968 and his Ph.D. in Genetics from Cornell University in 1972. He then joined the Biology faculty of Reed College in 1972 where he is currently Professor of Biology. Russell teaches an upper-division genetics and molecular biology lecture/laboratory course, the genetics section of the introductory biology course, an advanced seminar course in molecular virology, and advises senior thesis research students. He is also the author of a number of successful biology and genetics textbooks, including iGenetics: A Molecular Approach.

He is currently studying the molecular genetics of gene expression of a plant pathogenic RNA virus, using the budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, as the model host. The research goals are to define the genes of the host that encode products required for the expression of a specific gene involved in aphid transmission of the virus. His earlier research involved studies of ribosome biosynthesis and the organization of and regulation of the number of ribosomal RNA genes in Neurospora.

I was required to use this book for an undergraduate genetics course. I found this book to be overly dense and obfuscating. It approached the subject as if it were a graduate/doctoral level genetics class. It has the unique ability to muddle even the basic concepts of genetics. The book itself is difficult to read. The pictures and diagrams were poorly structured such that if you read a paragraph detaling some graphic illustration, the graphic would be found on the next page. This is something I utterly despise in textbooks, especially science textbooks.

I rate textbooks based on their ease of reading, the entertainment I derive from reading them, and how much I learn from reading them. Rarely do I find biology/medical textbooks to be a chore to read. This is the worst one I have ever come across. I had to force myself to read this book because I found it so awful. I thoroughly enjoy the subject of genetics but this book, and the professor, left such a rotten taste in my mouth that I didn't return to the subject, either for school or for leisure, for a year. It should be an academic crime that such an amazing and beautiful subject could be treated so horrendously and flippantly as it has been done here.

I hope your institution chooses a better genetics textbook.

Buyer beware! Do not buy the kindle edition if you have to do book problems. The end of chapter problems were not imported correctly and will make you look like a fool in your class. I had to return my kindle edition because of the issues. Basically, fractions and font case were screwed up in the import, making it impossible to get correct answer when doing genetic problems.

I teach Clinical Pharmacy and find this book far superior to the other Therapeutics text. The authors are top in their field, have practical knowledge and I always learn something new that I can use in clinical pharmacy practice when I read this book. Updated and then some, this text is easily useable for the next 4 years. Other text claims more frequent updates, but compare for yourself. Again, I strongly encourage students of pharmacotherapy read this book whether it is required or not.

This book is very readable and once you get past the case-based format, it has a lot of good information in it. The case-based format does make it difficult to find facts at times. I have the Kindle version though and I am very disappointed that zooming is not enabled on the many tables in the book, making that information difficult, if not impossible to read. This needs to be improved. One of my classmates actually ended up buying the physical textbook in addition to her Kindle version due to this. Hopefully Amazon will work with the publishers to get this fixed, otherwise the Kindle version should be sold for less.

"This edition again succeeds in offering a comprehensive, updated reference covering over 100 different disease states. Pharmacotherapy is outlined in a format that is complete yet easy to understand, with helpful patient cases that emphasize key points. Readers' critical thinking and problem-solving skills are enhanced by this patient-based approach to learning. As its title implies, this book allows student and clinicians from various specialties to research and apply complex information to everyday patient care."
