I am just barely begining to use this textbook in my speech pathology courses, but I do have one major complaint. The software, Anatesse, and studywares are not mac compatible. I was able to get the studywares cd to work on my mac by testing it out on a trial version of crossover mac, but the anatesse only shows the uninstall file..... Very annoying. No where on any of the info does it say what operating system is required. In addition on of my classmates is having issues running it on vista as well.... Fortunatly Seikel the main author is the head of the department I am in so I will be able to complain to someone.....
By K. Piper-Fangman
I don't say this lightly, but this book should be thrown in the trash. The sheer amount of incorrect information and typos should already give you a warning. The information is very unclear, often runs around in circles, and you reread the pages only to realize that at the end you haven't learned a thing. What the author does often is explain what anatomical structures are next to where in a rambling fashion; all without providing enough diagrams and pictures that correspond with the text. Sometimes the information contradicts what's been stated before, so you're left wondering what the hell is correct and what's not. It is absolutely maddening and nearly impossible to learn from this book. The few diagrams and pictures that are in the book are unhelpful, often incorrect, and unclear - whoever took pictures and drew diagrams for this textbook did not do their job. I'll give one example of many: in the ear chapter, the artist points to the cymba concha and labels it the triangular fossa. I had to check at least 3 other texts to confirm that this textbook got it wrong, and yes, it was wrong! I had to rely on my old anatomy textbooks and even bought the Netter's Head and Neck Anatomy for Dentistry text to supplement this craptastic excuse for a textbook. Even Barron's Anatomy and Physiology review book was more complete and clear than this one. I just don't understand why any professor would ever use this book! DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. You're going to end up learning the wrong information.

Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior [Kindle Edition]

Author: Leonard Mlodinow | Language: English | ISBN: B005X0K8CM | Format: PDF, EPUB

Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior
Free download Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior from 4shared, mediafire, hotfile, and mirror link Leonard Mlodinow, the best-selling author of The Drunkard’s Walk and coauthor of The Grand Design (with Stephen Hawking), gives us a startling and eye-opening examination of how the unconscious mind shapes our experience of the world and how, for instance, we often misperceive our relationships with family, friends, and business associates, misunderstand the reasons for our investment decisions, and misremember important events.

Your preference in politicians, the amount you tip your waiter—all judgments and perceptions reflect the workings of our mind on two levels: the conscious, of which we are aware, and the unconscious, which is hidden from us. The latter has long been the subject of speculation, but over the past two decades researchers have developed remarkable new tools for probing the hidden, or subliminal, workings of the mind. The result of this explosion of research is a new science of the unconscious and a sea change in our understanding of how the subliminal mind affects the way we live.

Employing his trademark wit and lucid, accessible explanations of the most obscure scientific subjects, Leonard Mlodinow takes us on a tour of this research, unraveling the complexities of the subliminal self and increasing our understanding of how the human mind works and how we interact with friends, strangers, spouses, and coworkers. In the process he changes our view of ourselves and the world around us.

Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior by Leonard Mlodinow

"Subliminal" is the provocative and fascinating look at the unconscious part of our minds. One of my favorite authors and physicists, Leonard Mlodinow, takes the readers on a journey into the science of the unconscious. What a fun and enlightening book this was. Mlodinow is the master of making the difficult accessible and fun for the masses. How are mind works is one of the most interesting subjects and I was thrilled to see that the coauthor of both the Grand Design and the equally interesting book War of the Worldviews makes his latest venture into this intriguing science. This excellent 272-page book is composed of the following ten chapters: 1. The New Unconscious, 2. Senses Plus Mind Equals Reality, 3. Remembering and Forgetting, 4. The Importance of Being Social, 5. Reading People, 6. Judging People by Their Covers, 7. Sorting People and Things, 8. In-Groups and Out-Groups, 9. Feelings, and 10. Self.

Positives:
1. A fascinating topic (science of the unconscious) in the hands of a master.
2. Elegant, conversational tone that makes this book a treat to read.
3. Mlodinow consistently produces great books and this one lived up to my expectations.
4. As accessible a book as you will find. A difficult topic made easy and fun to read.
5. The book is loaded with great and I mean great examples to help the reader grasp the latest in the science. One of the books strengths.
6. Great use of science history.
7. The pioneers of the science of the unconscious.
8. Great use the latest scientific research in this fascinating topic to support well-stated positions.
9. You will end up with a better grasp at how our brains work.
10.
We often imagine that every decision we make has a rational basis, that everything we do is for a "good reason." What we never consider is that each choice, each experience actually has an unknown framework that underlies it. So,"why" we think we made a decision may not explain the choice at all.

Mlodinow looks at our decisions from the perspective of the new field of social neuroscience, and finds what Freud and Jung theorized about almost a hundred years ago: that beneath every action and experience that is apparently rational, a set of unconscious processes actually dominates the decision-making process.

But these process are far from the "blood, lust and rage" of the Freudian unconscious, or the universal Platonic conceptions of Jung. Instead, these are adaptive mechanisms that protect us and help us to find a way through the rigors and dangers of life.

For research into these mechanisms, Instead of the "psychologist's couch" approach to self -understanding taken by classical psychoanalysis, Mlodinow champions an empirically verifiable line of research that is far from the "psychiatrist's couch" of classical psychoanalysis. Namely, social neuroscience, with the fMRI as the key experimental tool. This is a device that allows scientists to see exactly what processes are occurring in the brain during any given activity or experience.

In an experiment that gives breathtaking evidence of the possibilities presented by social neuroscience, a computer was able to select an image that closely matched one being viewed by an experimental subject, from over six million possible choices, on the basis of analyzing fMRI data alone.

Wow! I bought this book a couple of months ago, but just got around to opening it up last night to study for a histology test. I expected to find a slew of labelled photomicrographs to review, but this book is actually so much more! It is really an anatomy, physiology and histology text all in one - and it is done very very well.

The book is divided into 24 chapters, with chapters by system, tissue type, basic cell biology as well as tissue/slide preparation. Each chapter covers the anatomy and physiology of the system or tissue in question extremely well. The text gets right to the point, but is still very complete in its explanations. Within each paragraph, key words are bolded in red, so you can quickly find the exact topic you are interested in within a subject. All topics are supplemented with fully labelled light and electron photomicrographs of each structure, tissue and cell. Illustrations also accompany a majority of the micrographs to clarify things.

All illustrations and micrographs are thoroughly labelled. Within text pictures are typically 1/4 to 1/2 page in size, and each chapter has its own set of full-page color plates for even better up-close visualization and study. The full-page color photomicrographs at the end of each chapter are fully labelled, but go even further than that with exact descriptions of each label on the opposing page. This is really amazing, because, for instance, on a slide of the kidney that I was studying, not only were the proximal and distal tubules and collecting ducts labelled, there were also accompanying descriptions on the opposing page as to why one was different from another in these very similar looking structures.

I was encouraged to purchase for a graduate level course I am taking in bacterial pathogenesis. I think that is an excellent supplement to the course, especially considering that it is quite inexpensive when compared to all of the other graduate text books I have had to purchase. This is definitely my favorite text book for this semester because while it gives a lot of technical information, it is written in such a way as to make it relevant, clear, and generally easy to read. The authors really seemed to try and make this book as interesting as possible, which I really appreciate. It is so much easier to learn from a book that you enjoy reading, which is something that most text book writers don't seem to realize.

This book covers quite a variety of topics related to the molecular and general mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis as well as host responses. It is probably not the best book for those who are solely interested in clinical bacteriology as it does not go into much detail on this subject. The figures and tables generally seem to be concise, easy to understand, and clearly captioned. Every chapter also includes boxes that contain interesting real world stories related to the chapter topic. Some of these stories are about more historic events and some are about fairly recent developments in the field.

If you are taking a course that recommends this book I would encourage you to get it. There are also earlier editions of this book out there, but I have not looked at any of them so I really can't say anything as to how they compare to the third edition.
