In my medical school class about 30% of the population were Southeast Asian and yet we still learned nothing about the particular risk factors of this group. We also learned little to nothing about the metabolic imbalances that can develop from eating the (Americanized/Exported—a favorite reason to road trip to NYC) version of the original authentic, pre-industrial cuisine. The increased risk of Southeast Asian cuisine (in its current incarnation) has profound implications for all vegetarians and vegans, and Dr Sinha teaches people how to navigate the need for more protein in a culturally appropriate manner.

I appreciate that Dr Sinha opens his book by redirection attention away from Cholesterol, LDL, and Saturated fat to the real culprit of heart disease: inflammation. HIs metabolic 6-pack of blood testing provides a reasonable and very cost effective approach to more accurately assessing risk. I also appreciate the Dr’s emphasis on how you treat your body, because that matters more than blood tests. This is very important for people under 50 to be aware of, since many labs remain normal until the body is deeply into a state of metabolic imbalance.

Another aspect of the book that I find particularly helpful is the exercise section. His Silicon Vally practice may be located in the epicenter of the epidemic of screen-addiction and activity deprivation, and he tailors his advice to this setting, providing a collection of quick, effective, simple workouts that can be done in the home or work office with minimal to no equipment.

Dr Sinha's passion for prevention is infectious and inspiring.

I liked the book primarily because it explains the causality behind CAD (and metabolic diseases more generally), in a simple, easy to understand way.

Regardless of where you stand on the low fat vs. low carb spectrum, it highlights what both sides appear to agree on:
a) eat a lot of nutrient dense foods (especially, plant based)
b) get a lot of exercise
c) de-stress.

These are simple rules, but this book offers some useful and practical guidelines, including suggestions for apps. The book is also novel in that it emphasizes ratios, rather than presenting absolute targets.

If you are of Indian origin, this book offers what several others do not. It has an excellent understanding of Indian cultures, and offers suggestions, including recipes, that are geared specifically for Indo-Americans.

A suggestion. While reading this book, don't take the recommendations to suggest that you can be a glutton, especially when it comes to Saturated fats, which, in high concentrations, do cause oxidative stress (see e.g. [...]
Eat in moderation. Control portion sizes. Eat a lot of anti-oxidant foods. Choose your carbohydrate food sources carefully, emphasizing low-glycemic and high-anti oxidant ones.

I have gained a great deal from this book, and recommend it whole-heartedly. It is brilliantly written, and extremely useful. A game changer for Indian-Americans.
