Nicely written and edited. A considerable upgrade in the book's index, which in previous editions was 'sparse' making it difficult to quickly locate needed information. The 5th edition has corrected this shortcoming.
Many graphs, tables, and illustrations, making the understanding of the topic being presented much easier. Material is up-to-date and organized effectively.

I love the 4th edition but updates/corrections have been made in this new version. I love this new book! It makes learning very easy with all of the charts and tables included and is easy to read and understand. In my opinion an essential read for all of those studying Nurse Anesthesia:)

Guide to Research Techniques in Neuroscience
Free download Guide to Research Techniques in Neuroscience [Kindle Edition] for everyone book mediafire, rapishare, and mirror link Neuroscience is by definition a multidisciplinary field: some scientists study genes and proteins at the molecular level while others study neural circuitry. A single topic such as the auditory system can be studied using techniques from genetics, imaging, biochemistry, or electrophysiology. A young scientist must learn how to read the primary literature and then develop their own experiments. This book offers that scientist an overview of mainstream research techniques, provides guidelines on how to choose one technique over another, offers tips on analyzing data, and provides a list of references for additional detailed study. This book can also assist an experienced scientist understand published studies conducted outside their own subfield.

*Written by Stanford University graduate students in neuroscience to provide a "hands-on" approach for other neuroscience graduate students  *Techniques within one field will be compared so that user can select best technique for their experiment *Chapters include references (key articles, books, protocols) for additional detailed study *Data Analysis boxes in each chapter help with data interpretation and offer guidelines on how best to represent results *"Walk-through" boxes guide students through the experiment step-by-step

Modern neuroscience employs a horde of techniques. A non exhaustive list includes electrophisiology, microscopy, animal models, brain imaging, tissue cultures, genetic knockouts, protein purification, and many more. An aspiring neuroscientist needs to have at least an awareness of the techniques in order to: (1) understand and appreciate the experimental results in neuroscience publications and (2) opt for the right technique to answer the questions he/she is after. This book was written to provide just that.

The book is organized into 14 chapters each discussing a specific technique or family of techniques. On average 30 pages are dedicated to each technique. This is brief enough not to bore readers yet detailed enough to provide a sufficiently deep understanding. The chapters are rather brief and hence sections on techniques that the reader is familiar with won't offer much but it is those sections on unfamiliar techniques that are worth the read! Another consequence of the chapters' brevity is that readers interested in the details of a specific technique will have to look elsewhere. The book helps in this regard though: At the end of each chapter, there are two valuable reference lists: The first is a list of core texts specialized on the research technique discussed in the chapter. The second is a list of selected studies where the technique was put to good use. I found the lists very valuable.

The book is written in a clear, casual and friendly style. I believe that it is well in the reach of most readers regardless of the background.

Finally, a particularly nice thing about the book is that it puts the reader in the mentality of an experimenter which is a great things for those with little prior lab experience.

    From the Back Cover

The dynamic nature of heart action and the ever changing demands on its output and power make it an organ that can only be understood by integrating form with function at every level. Our contemporary understanding of the human heart and its workings is at the cutting edge of modern medical and biological research but, even in the current era of advanced molecular biology, mathematics and engineering, we still struggle to fully decipher the complexities of the normal and diseased heart.

Leonardo’s heart studies represent the pinnacle of his anatomical endeavours. In his work on the heart, his use of ingenious diagrams as well as detailed representational drawings is cleverly combined with carefully crafted verbal descriptions of complicated physiological concepts. Some of his thinking, developed through drawing, was so advanced that only now with the advent of accessible technology and advances in modern knowledge of the heart, it is possible to re-interpret Leonardo’s conclusions and to point out how accurate his logical reasoning and pure observation really was. Several of his ideas continue to sit well alongside our modern understanding of cardiac physiology and heart function.

This book will feature all of Leonardo's drawings on the heart and its physiology, accompanied by translations of his accompanying notes. The veracity of Leonardo's work is proven against contemporary dissections of cardiac structure and wherever possible, his illustrations are compared with contemporary images generated by magnetic resonance scanners and high definition ultrasound. It represents the only modern interpretation of Leonardo’s works by a practicing clinician and anatomist in a way that is meaningful to cardiology and medical specialists as well as art historians, and the general public.
