Dr. Greg truly cares about animals and wants to help out pet owners so that they can give their pets the best nutritional support possible, even on a smaller budget.
When my dog started getting symptoms of food allergies and hay fever, I had to learn more about canine nutrition than I ever wanted to. I am not a science person and this area is more complicated than my dietary needs!
Dog Dish diet is still packed full of important nutritional info, but it's organized in a way so that you learn a new tool with each part of the book, so that by the end you can form your own conclusion as to what kind of diet is best for your dog and what you can handle. I tried reading another dog nutrition book (rated high on amazon as well) but it was just too much for me to absorb. Plus, the author was not a DVM, which made me a bit weary of the advice. (I don't want to prepare eggshell powder, nor do I have time to cook extra stuff like that for myself.) DDD broke things down easy, while still being packed with info.
Even though I'm not a vet, I am glad that Dr. Greg IS a vet. There are people out there that claim to be "canine nutritionists". As my dog's vet warned me, those nutritionists at pet food stores take a short course and get a certificate. Even though I'm sure they mean well and want to help, I can't see it prudent of me to get advice from anyone but an experienced vet if I want to switch my dog's diet. It's just like anything else. If I had clogged arteries and had a high risk for a heart attack, I can read books written by certified nutritionists on what a good diet for me is and decide to eat alfalfa and pumpkin seeds all day, but every non-MD nutritionist warns you if you have a medical problem, to consult a doctor (duh).
