Before you choose this book for your advanced practice nursing students, just know that the book is large, written in fine print, and full of verbiage. If you feel that your students need to learn about culturally responsive care, ethics in health care, professional integrity in primary care, or how to translate research into practice, this might be the book you are looking for. IN reality, most nursing degree programs require classes in research, ethics, leadership and role development. Too much time is spent on these topics in this book. What could be said in a few words becomes paragraph after paragraph and chapter after chapter. It is certainly NOT a book they will want to keep as a reference text unless they have hours to spend looking for something they don't already know. Just hold on to old ethics text, a research text, a role development textbook, and a leadership book. Most of them cover what this book covers with much less effort. The authors of this book seem to be trying to make much to do about something or everything.

just read a chapter everyday of the clerckship to get you thourhg ! I love every part of it - the clear approach, the definitions... everything

If you're going to really study for your IM shelf, get Step up to Medicine (If you have a LOT of study time). If you're like me and you waited until you only had two weeks before your shelf to start cramming, this book will do the trick. You won't do great on your shelf, but you'll certainly pass. I hit exactly national average with just this and a handful of UWorld questions.
Most of my classmates went with Step up 2 Medicine with the assumption that doing great on your IM shelf would equate to solid preparation for step 2. This... was probably very smart. But, Case Files is quick, easy, basic, and all you need for the NBME shelves.

As an anesthesia resident, it's hard to lug around large volumes for review when you must be light on your feet.

This edition allowed me to download the text/multimedia to my iPhone and iPad for convenient use throughout the day, on the go.

The multimedia integrated with each chapter is amazing and a perfect audio/visual aid to the easy to read text.

All I have is praise for the new edition.

I bought Barash because I just can't read Miller (Baby Miller is great though). This new version is a great deal - you get the book AND the complete on-line product for one price. The textbook is massive at 1880 pages, full color, and looks nice. I haven't even opened mine. The on-line product is amazing! They published it through Inkling (www.inkling.com), and with this version you get full text access plus all the multimedia extras. All are available on the web or via the iProduct/Android apps. The Inkling app isn't quite as polished as iBooks or Kindle, but their help desk was fast and responsive to a minor issue with my account.

The material itself is very easy to read. I found a few typos and contradictions, but nothing that detracts in a meaningful way. Overall, I am very happy with this version of Barash, making it my go-to source for information.
